The Last of Us

This is the title I've been looking forward to for quite some time, the entire year really.  Naughty Dog's follow-up to Uncharted 3, I think this is really going to be a good one.  They are the reason I bought a PS3.

As a huge fan of all 3 Uncharted games, I'm very interested in this one. Unfortunately Ive forced myself onto a budget for now and likely wont get it at launch. All of the game footage I've seen looks fantastic. It also seems to be different enough story and gameplay wise from other "post apocalyptic" games that its definitely not going to feel like a "zombie game" which is great as there isn't a more overused subject in gaming and media in general at the moment. I know it was originally already supposed to have dropped in May but got pushed back to a June release, do you know the exact date?

Looks like June 14th.  I'm confused, that's a Friday.  Things are supposed to release on Tuesday, but I guess that makes binge gaming easier.

The story is what looks fascinating because it does seem to be post apocalyptic without zombies or aliens.  I'm wondering if it's going to have a The Road-esque feel, but with more fighting (and less stylistic phrasing).

Yeah, that is an odd release date, movies are the only things that I know that usually come out on Fridays. Maybe Naughty Dog is trying to tell us that this game is so realistic and awesome that its like an interactive movie? Haha.

Hopefully I get some decent birthday gift money in late June and I can pick it up then. This and GTA V are the only other two video game purchases I plan on making the rest of the year (maybe the new Madden if they've fixed things with franchise mode).

Is this still on for the PS3 or are they going to save it to launch with the PS4?

The reviews have been outstanding thus far, it's sitting around a 95 on Metacritic.

I believe I saw that IGN gave it a coveted 10/10 rating. Will definitely be using some birthday gift money towards this in a few weeks. Can't believe you, I and Envy are the only ones on this forum talking about this game...I've been looking forward to it for almost a year now and the reviews are certainly pressing me towards getting it asap.

Definitely enjoying it so far, I think I've logged about 9 hours in it.  I enjoyed Uncharted more but this is a great game.

Good to hear from a gamer's perspective. I'm on vacation this coming week so I will likely pick it up sometime then.

Sad that it's only for PS3 - I have 360. The game looks ballin'!

I'm in the same boat!  Definitely a bummer, it does look quite awesome.

How good is this game for those who have played it?

It is what I would classify as a 'must buy'.  Better than the first Uncharted, not as good as 2 and 3.  Still better than most other games, and the emotion you get from the characters is quite unique for the medium.  I'd give it a 9/10.

It's a lot more stealthy than Uncharted it, and resources are quite scarce.  Just a warning.  There's one really powerful scene about halfway through the game that made the whole purchase worthwhile for me.

I've never played the uncharted games. Now I'm sure I should but if I'm new will it still make sense?

Yeah the game has nothing to do with Uncharted, I'm just comparing it to Naughty Dog's past games.

I would be kicking myself for not buying this yet...had I not d/l Deus Ex: Human Revolution for free as a PS plus member last week and gotten sucked into its own version of video game stealth (reminds me so much of Metal Gear Solid combined with the new Hitman's cover system to stay hiding). Never played the first two Deus Ex games as I'm not a big PC gamer, but this one is pretty fun. My birthday is in a week so perhaps family will gift me some money to purchase The Last of Us.

I really enjoy sneaking around in games with limited ammo/etc so that gets me stoked, T3hRaven. Depending on the games' setting/story/characters, there are lots of times where being "all powerful" is a major bummer for me.

Grim, if you have a PS3 there is ZERO reason for you not to have checked out at least one of the Uncharted games. If you don't have a PS3, you are forgiven haha.

I do have a ps3. I was in nursing school for four years and pretty much had no life for about two years. Lol. That's why I haven't played those games. I'm getting caught up now. It's on my list.

Gotcha, I know how that goes, the only reason I've been able to play so much lately is because I'm taking a break from school myself. And scratch what I said in that previous comment about buying it next week. Got to thinking and made sure I had the funds, just went and bought it haha. I'll be sinking some major time in tonight..

How long does this take to beat?  I'm kind of interested, but if it takes less than 20 hours or so, I have a hard time buying it at full price.

Great point! I usually buy my games cheaper on eBay. I love it. Got great deals there.

I'm roughly halfway through and have 8 hrs into it, though I check EVERYWHERE for scavenging materials, ammo, and upgrades so feasibly someone could probably beat the game in 12 hours ornso if I had ro guess. There is a little incentive to play through again on a harder setting since you can continue upgrading your current weapons and abilities. There's also some small multiplayer aspect that I haven't checked out yet. I guess I'm saying this game was worth paying full price easily for myself. Though 90% of the games I buy are new anyway.

Not sure if it's worth it for me.  I'm not terribly good at shooter/combat type games.  I prefer sports games, but The Last of Us piqued my interested since I'm into the whole zombie thing.  Not sure if I want to spend that much when I'll most likely ignore the scavenging part of the game unless the need arises.  Maybe I'll steal it from a friend.

Hmm well based on what youve said this may not be the game for you, I would still reccommend borrowing/gamefly/redbox/etc. It really is a must play game IMO but I am a gamer after all.

Scavenging is a must to make it through and I personally love it. If I only have one medkit and no molotovs for instance and I pick up some alcohol and rags, do I craft an offensive or defensive item (as alcohol and rags are ingredients to both items)? Do I invest the weapon upgrade pieces in an upgrade to my bow's range or my shotgun's recoil reduction? Just examples but ones that you may face during a playthrough.

It may also not be quite your cup of tea as the infected in this are not zombies per se. They are living humans infected with the cordyceps fungus which makes fighting people in the early stages of the infection as unnerving as the later stages. Ocassionally the early stage infected won't attack you unless they are attacked. I read online that the developers specifally made some of the infected AIs this way because they wanted to show that there is still some humanity in there and they are still fighting the infection. They share some mannerisms and behaviors typical of zombies but that's where the similarities end. I personally love this as I myself am tired of the same old zombies and like that there is a semi-scientific explanation for what has happened in this game's world.

The developers gave a range of 12-16 hours. I just completed the game myself and it took me around 17 hours. A lot will depend on your play style. I searched everywhere for loot and really took my time. I was also more stealthy in my combat and less run n gun so that added time as well. Either way the game should easily take longer than any of the Uncharted games.

Keep in mind the game also has an online multiplayer mode. I haven't tried it yet though.

I highly recommend the game. It's incredible. I am picky over which games I pay full price for and this one did not disappoint.
