Chris Canty on Joe Flacco and the Ravens

The most amazing thing to me was that Canty didn't hesitate when he said Joe over Eli.  It seems he made up his mind a while ago.

Eh... I'm not too excited over this. As much as I'd like to imagine Canty is sincere I just can't see him as that. It sounds too much like he's saying it because it's the QB for his new team.

I like Flacco a lot. I think he's in the top 5 when discussing best QB. I'm also a fan of this football team. While I'd like to believe my judgment and perception aren't biased, I recognize they very well may be just that.

Yeah. It is hard to be honest and say we are not biased in any way. Although as far as Eli, I have always felt he was over rated. Certainly he is a very good QB , I just do not think that, individually, he is as great as he is made out to be. He is not on his brother's or Brady's or Rodgerslevel. I think a lot of his success is based upon the exceptional team he has had.

Eli has some bad stretches, but for most of this year and last year, he's been great. He can make a lot of throws into tight windows, but he also makes his share of mistakes. I actually don't think he gets enough credit sometimes.

Very comparable QBs right now.  They are 1 and 2 in career road playoff wins, with the edge to Flacco in fewer seasons.  Both are Superbowl MVPs, though Eli is ahead with 2 to Flacco's 1.  Neither have ever had a losing season, though Flacco is ahead in that category still because he has never missed the playoffs.  One big difference is that Flacco makes and wins in the playoffs every year.  Eli is no bum with 8 playoff wins in 9 seasons, but all 8 of them came in his two Superbowl winning seasons.  That means, Giants fans have watched through 7 seasons of Eli's career that resulted in ZERO combined playoff wins.  That's rough.  I'll take our guy Flacco with a slight edge here, which puts him in the 5 spot overall in the league, IMO.

but there is a balance to this interview.  while he said that Joe throws a beautiful deep ball better than anyone in the league; that in comparison...Eli was better in clutch situations.

Flacco gets bashed for his inconsistency, but over the course of their careers Joe has been much more consistent than Eli. Manning has the 2 championships, but he also has missed the playoffs 4 times in 9 seasons. Joe is also considerably better from a statistical standpoint over their first 5 seasons. Combine that with Joe's greater physical talent and I think it is pretty obvious who the better QB is.

I love that he said you need to have some turnover in the roster, and that he said Baltimore still had key pieces in place

I don't understand this argument. Matt Ryan has been part of some exceptional teams and he has 1 playoff win in his whole 5 year career. Matt Schaub has been part of some quality teams and he only has 1 playoff win if I'm correct. Philip Rivers - nuff said. Tony Romo has been on some decent teams. Peyton has played on numerous teams that started the season 9-0, 10-0, 11-0 and he still has 1 less Super than his brother. He can't apologize for his Front Office doing the job right and he also can't afford to NOT execute

Agreed. Even Aaron Rodgers needed a great defense to win the SB. Since the defense fell off he's done nothing in the playoffs.

Show me a QB who won it all with a "bad team" and you'll be showing me an empty list.

Yeah this doesn't hold much weight. He's chosing the QB he is currently playing with. Agreed with others that Eli is definitely the best QB to compare Joe to though.. not absurd to pick Joe over Eli.

They were just discussing this on NFLAM, comparing their first 5 years. Eric Davis and Mark Kriegel (who used to be very critical of Flacco) actually both chose Flacco. Mark Kriegel even said it wasn't even close over the first 5 years. Wyche picked Eli, though acknowledged that their career trajectories are very similar.

It was a good discussion, hope they post video of it.

As a player, you always say your QB is better.  If Canty was on the Giants, he would say Eli was better, even if that isn't his true belief.

Not if your QB is Gabbert...

I have a feeling his answer about Eli being better in clutch situations will change after this year. I understand why he chose Eli in that situation because he's never been on the sideline with the game on the line while Flacco was doing his thing to win a big game in Pittsburgh or NE.

I'm sure Canty's comments have a lot to do with Flacco's performances from that NYG through the Super Bowl. Him saying Flacco has the best deep ball in the game is one of those popular answers people give about Flacco when they really don't understand what makes him special.

I've been saying for the last 3 years I'd take Flacco over Eli. I don't see much need to change my views now. I think it's a fair comparison, but after this year it won't be. Flacco is the last QB among the top 5 to have his offense completely turned over to him. Brady, Brees, Rodgers and Peyton all took off when that point came in their careers. It usually happens around year 5, Flacco is entering year 6 and I think the headline of this 2013 season will be Flacco Unchained.

People like Steve Wyche still say that Rice is the face of this offense and I continue to disagree. He said the Ravens don't win the Super Bowl without Ray Rice. I say he didn't watch the games closely enough. The offense didn't operate well until Caldwell finally allowed Flacco to run the offense from the LOS. If that happens consistently in 2013 Flacco will have his first 4,000yds 40TD season.

Which part do you not understand? I could try and explain it to you, although "he is not as good as his brother or Brady" is pretty plain and simple. I am not one of these stats guys, that claims since he has two rings he MUST be great. Rings do not make a QB great. If they did then Trent Dilfer would be considered to be as good as Peyton, and not even a simpleton would make that claim.

Eli is very inconsistent. Sometimes he plays well and sometimes he doesn't. Sometimes he can make those great plays and sometimes he makes foolish mistakes. It seems fairly plain to me.

The argument that claims a player with a superior team should not be considered amongst one the better players at his position. All the players I mentioned have been part of some pretty good teams yet they haven't managed to win when it counts. It could be very well argued that they are just as good as Eli if not better. So to say that he gets credit because he plays on a consistently good team makes me scratch my head a bit.

True, that is a valid point. A team is made up of 22 players. Still, he (and his team) does not go into he playoffs on any sort of consistent basis. He (and his team)tends to be hit or miss. Brady is usually in the running and the Pats are often in the AFCC game. Peyton used to be the same way, prior to his neck issues. I will give you Rodgers. He has not been consistent either. I am not saying that Eli is not a very good QB, I just do not rate him at the top like so many of the talking heads do. I do not put Flacco up that high either, I just think we have seen all there is of Eli, and Flacco is just getting started.

we are just hashing about opinion here. And not one that I have any strong feelings about either way. The truth is it is really impossible to honestly rank QBs as to who is better, since, as you pointed out, it takes the whole team to win or lose.

Right.  While winning the SB is the pinnacle for any player, it's silly to use SB wins alone in defining a QBs talent compared to others.  For me it has to do with decision making(not making stupid mistakes, i.e. - easy picks, making the right throw at the right time, etc.), ability to make all of the throws and calmness under pressure. Any game won, including the SB, is a product of team effort and not the performance of a single player.

Yea I laughed so hard when I heard Stephen A say Flacco isn't even close to Eli because Flacco doesn't have 2 SB MVPs, Flacco didn't outplay Brady Twice.

News flash to the people at First Take. Flacco has been outplaying Tom Brady since the entering the NFL, everyone just started paying attention with the AFC Championship lost in 2012.

In the ultamate team sport, I find it hard to discredit a player because of a great supporting case. Because it's next to impossible to say who benefits the most from who. All three triplets made the HOF, but did Aikman benefit from Irvin and Smith more then they benefited from him? People love to say how Brady has won SBs with names like Troy Brown and Deion Branch, but they fail to mention the names of the defensive stars who really lead that team to 3 SBs. Brady didn't start putting up great numbers until he got Randy Moss and Welker. However with those great players and great numbers, the great Tom Brady has 2 SB losses.
