Mount Rushmore of Ravens

96 posts in this topic

Heard this topic on a radio show in another city and thought it would be fun to post here. Just pick the four ravens that best represent the franchise to be immortalized. I think the top 3 will be a consensus but you could go a lot of different directions.

So if the top 3 are consensus, who would be on the waiting list?

My 4th guy could be Joe Flacco...I could also change that

Alternates - Mike McCrary, Peter, Goose, Mason or Stover if I could do that

Ray Lewis

Jon Ogden

Ed Reed

If you know Baltimore, you won't leave these 3 out.. So everyone who posts will automatically have these 3.

My 4th, to switch it up..

Ozzie Newsome

What? No space for Cam? :P :P

If I had to save the 4th head for a person we had to get rid in order to reach the SB.. Yes Cam's head will be next to Reed's lol.

Youngins. Matt Stover.

I had him in an earlier post that I deleted. I think he's a strong alternate if you put Ozzie up there

As for the others, I think JO75 was 1st ballot. Ray is first ballot. Ed is first Ballot.

We still haven't identified a long term LT. Billy Cundiff did ok in 2010. Tucker is going to be fantastic. Truth be told, we've moved on at the kicker position.

I don't see what the current kicker situation has to do with this.  Stover carried this team for many years.  We would not have XXXV without him.

I keep flip flopping Jamal for Stover, but for right now its Stover.

Not disagreeing with Stover. Like I said, if it's not Ozzie, then Matt. I agree so I guess I'm kind of blowing hot air, but my point was that we've managed to live life without him.If Mt Rushmore is a popularity contest, of course he's on there. If Mt Rushmore is more about something that you did that no one else will be able to provide, then the door might be open for others. There's no tricks behind kicking with accuracy such that so many other kickers aren't able to replicate it

Don't disagree with him being on it, but wouldn't be outraged if someone else is on it

Ray, Ed, JO, and Stover for Mount Rushmore.

Art will get a statue a la Ab Lincoln Statue. Ozzie can be our Statue of Liberty, instead of holding a torch he'll hold a Lombardi trophy with SB XXXV 1/28/01 and SB XLVII 2/3/13 etched into it.

Flacco, Rice, Ngata, Suggs, Harbaugh, Bisciotti, etc. can be on the money. Everyone's covered.

Raven Nation.

Again, no disagreement. I had mentioned him in a post that I deleted. Out of curiosity though

Hypothetcial 1 - What if Ravens win another Super Bowl in the next 2 or 3 years (if not more) with Joe Flacco as our starting QB throughout the season and in the playoffs. Would you then give him any consideration?

Hypothetical 2 - What if Suggs won another DPOY doing something that Ed Reed didn't even do even though he got jobbed the season he was a PUP. Would he get consideration?

Just throwing this out there. Brian billick changed the fortunes and the perception of this franchise forever. Remember he was the hottest coaching prospect on the market and he chose Baltimore. Before then they were more of a laughing stick nationally. You could go no where w/o hearing about poor Cleveland. He also got us past Jacksonville who believe it or not was unbearable for a long time.

i personally disagree with stover. if you're argument is that we wouldnt have our first SB without him, well i'd have to agree, but id also have to argue that we wouldnt have SB47 without flacco, and we are a team that has been above average to very good for id say 14 out of 16, and in the last 2 years(im counting 2011) joe flacco finally led us to true greatness, and its been 12 years since weve experienced that feeling, if it wasnt for joe, ed reed wouldve never gotten his ring, terrel suggs maybe never wouldve gotten it, ray wouldnt have fittingly retired with a brand new shiny ring, all of our guys may have never gotten a ring if it wasnt for joe flacco. how you can take the man, who took the reigns of this franchise and thrust it into greatness, is beyond me. i believe joe flacco is more deserving than even ed reed, and until joe does something like cause locker room controversies, criticize teammates in playoff runs, express your desire to play for your rival, and play the brett favre game for 2 straight offseasons, then i will stick with my decision to put joe in front of ed. i have been eds biggest supporter until his last 2 years in baltimore when he suddenly lost all of his class, since then i have just not been too appreciative of him.

MY mt rushmore would be:
Ray
JO
Flacco
Art

runner ups would be ozzie and stover.

if it wasnt for art, we wouldnt have this team, if it wasnt for joe, we would only have 1 SB, ray is self explanitory, and JO was the first building block of this franchise. ozzie deserves a spot but only 4 faces can go there, and i give art the nod over ozzie, and stover is a HOF kicker, one of the greatest ever and undoubtedly carried us on the scoreboard for years, but i honestly believe, that a kicker should never, ever, ever, EVER, get more recognition from the franchise than the first franchise qb we've ever had.

Rebuttal to the idea of Brian Billick

  1. He had the greatest show on turf BEFORE there was the greatest show on turf. He probably doesn't get a head coaching job without Randy, Chris, Robert Smith, Brad Johnson/Randall lineup
  2. Case in point, he fired Jim Fassell and I remember that week we played the Saints in New Orleans and I think the highest number of points we had on the season was the 26 in that game. I remember someone on ESPN making a comment that him calling plays was paying dividends, but I also remember that the defense forced a a few turnovers that game and they may have even scored once or twice

But I know you know that much which makes it a very interesting thought that you bring up.

Did he have a hand in the Kyle Boller selection? Not that I would also hold that against him...

JO

Flacco

Flacco has changed the tides of Raven football and has not only brought us home a SB but he will surely be competing for more rings for years to come. It might be a little pre-mature now but I think those 4 have effected Ravens history more then any other 4 players up to this point.

What? There is no factual basis to say the 2000 Ravens would have lost without Stover, and I think it's an insult to the greatest defense of all time to even imply such a thing. The Ravens outscored their playoff opponents 95-23...how do any of those wins turn into losses without Stover?

Even with only 7 seasons in Baltimore? Played in 6 of them. 2004 and 2005 he rushed for a total of 10 TDs

Everybody else played at least 11 seasons
