Very nice and thank you for posting this. I like to read Flacco talking like that. It's encouraging.

Neither of them has proven anything yet, but last preseason got me really stoked over Deonte. He has huge potential, let's see if we can bring it out of him

I agree Fly.  They are all a work in progress.  I just hope that just one of them displays great blocking technique.  That's what we will to be missed about Anquan.

I like Deonte the best out of the wr's we have.  Just has that raw playmaking ability that we've only got to see glimpses of in the NFL. Jacoby is also underrated and I think he can step his game up next year and cut out some of the drops. People forget Jacoby also had a game winning TD catch against the Eagles this year and the scab refs jobbed us with that OPI call. Was complete pandering to a rabid Philly crowd from the replacement bums . At least we didn't get Fail Mary'd like GB though.

Go to 2:43 to see this non sense

It's even worse than I remember it.  I remembered it as if it should have been a no-call of any sort.  Watching that again... good lord, that was an awful, BS call.  That was DEFENSIVE PI.  Not even a no-call, it was blatant, disgusting defensive pass interference.  And they call it against Jacoby.  It was pathetic.  The refs really screwed us on that game.

Take this for what it's worth, but 105.7 had someone from the Sun on this morning and he was talking about the WR competition.  He said that Doss and Thompson primarily ran next to Torrey.  The 4th receiver was Streeter.  Reed and LaQuan were working splitting time as the 5th receiver.  Mellette and the other UDFAs apparently didn't see much action, and when they did, they looked overmatched.  Now, obviously things change with Jacoby in the mix, but it seems like they have a plan of the WR depth chart.

#1: Torrey Smith

#2-4: Jacoby Jones, Tandon Doss, Deonte Thompson

#5: Tommy Streeter

#6: David Reed/LaQuan Williams

Not sure what that means for Mellette.  I know it's really early in the process, but it's probably not a good sign that he didn't perform all that well.  We still have a long way to go before anything becomes official, but it does look like there is a plan in place, and it fits what most of us have been thinking.

Sounds about right to me. I figured we would IR Mellette unless he blows it up in camp. Things can still change.

Have no idea why they re-signed Reed, unless it was for ST insurance.   I still don't get why people still try to hype butterfingers up.  I get that he had a high yardage return rate, but I don't remember anything spectacular in terms of breaks, run-aways, or touchdowns in those.  Just a burst of speed from him as the stadium sucks in all the air in baltimore praying he doesn't fumble the ball away again.  Seriously, the question wasn't "Will he break it for a TD", but "we he hold on to the ball"

You get this from one bad performance? Not like he has a track record of it. Come on now.

and I do predict that the team will at least be linked in contention with a vet either during training camps or pre-season.

In 2010 we were garbage at returning kicks until he stepped in and led the league. He had a TD against Houston and a huge return against Tennessee in 2011. He didn't return kicks for half that season or all of this one.

Deonte also fumbled away one of his few kick returns, but you don't hear people ripping him apart for that. You need to let go of the Seattle game. He doesn't have butterfingers, he just got careless running with the ball.

Yea? maybe its me and the circle of people I watch and/or talk games with.   I feel that he's been more of a detriment than a benefit.   With his drops at inopportune times, his constant injury woes holding a roster spot, etc just aren't enough to overcome the infrequent good plays he may produce

His drops at inopportune times?  Yeah, tell me about all of the drops he's had in his limited targets.  I'll bet he's had 0 drops.

Do you even know what the word contention means? I don't think we will be linked in a rivalry or competition with a vet WR this preseason.

What drops? When he's been hurt, he's been on PUP or IR, and therefore not taking a roster spot. When he's been healthy, he's been one of our best special teamers. I think it's obvious that he's showing the coaching staff something. I mean, he did just get a two year deal for nearly 2 million. I also think you are (incorrectly) assuming that Reed won't progress or contribute on offense. I'm pretty sure he will.

What flags are you even talking about?

Don't forget the amount of flags he gets, and a drug suspension

The one flag in a dreadful Seahawks game? Yeah, it wasn't necessary, but how many other flags has he drawn?  And a drug suspension that is over with and hasn't been a problem since?  Okay, David Reed is clearly the worst player ever...

Yes, he's butterfingers and so is Ray Rice for fumbling all those times in the playoffs. Let's cut him as well, or trade him away.

How do you feel about Jacoby "Drops 'Em" Jones, who has had his fair share of scares back there as well last year? Let's not kid or delude ourselves here by acting like David Reed is some worthless bum without talent. If you want to say some fumbles are reason enough for him to be gone, what about Joe Flacco, who has fumbled his fair share? How about Ed Dickson, who has let the ball bounce off of his hands?

I'm sick of this senseless David Reed bashing.

It's another one of those "Oh, I remember his one bad game against the Seahawks so that must mean he's a terrible player" arguments.

Sorry Raven, you're right.   I left out "to bring in" after the word contention.  Its my fault for assuming context clues would give you the gist of my words in an informal forums setting.  How silly of me.

I don't think he'll contribute.   That is my opinion.  You say I "got this" from one performance, when in reality I'm encompassing all of his time spent on field.   I agree he didn't get much opportunity, but what opportunity he DID get was squandered with all the reasons listed above....multiple infractions resulting in suspension, failure to break out and produce (whether targeted or failure to get open/make the play when he was targeted) stepping in during an injury in the depth chart above him (Jones?), personal foul flags that cost us needed momentum, his injuries keeping him sidelined, and sure...his fumbles.

He's not a rookie.  How much progression are you expecting?

I'm not a fan of David Reed. I was fine with letting him go last year with the injury on settlement. We kept him. With that said, the senseless bashing is absurd. He looked good as a gunner and you can't say he's a terrible player--he's just made some absolutely stupid mistakes in limited time and like Tandon  Doss, people forget the good things and emphasize the bad.

These arguments hold no water, for the simple reason that the players listed above have contributed more than they've screwed up. I never said Reed is "some worthless bum without talent", I'm sure he has an upside, but it doesn't look like we're going to get at it. That is my point. Swing it any way you want, but you're shortsightedly comparing consistent contributors who have drops/fumbles with someone who has a much higher percentage of screw ups to targets. For our team's sake, I hope that if he DOES get more targets he proves my opinion of what he's shown so far to be wrong. I just don't see it, and hope you come with a better argument next time. (Although, I will say yours is more thought out than rmw10's statement)

So why are personal attacks being thrown in here? I haven't insulted you in any way. Not sure how this has anything to do with David Reed. Seems like you injecting insult for the sake of diminishing my argument, which seems unnecessary to me.

David Reed hasn't had an impact on offense. You're correct in that regard, outside of a few reverses, if I recall correctly. People use the excuse that Anquan Boldin was hampered by Cam Cameron, but what about other players? It's not fair to use the argument for one and not the other. Cam didn't use a lot of 3WR sets, and if he did, it included big guys or those proven veteran possession wide receivers who can hopefully stretch the field but couldn't.

You can't diminish the talents of a player due to the player not receiving the chances to play as an indication the player cannot. That's simply unfair, and would possibly indicate a player like Paul Kruger is as worthless as you claim David Reed is. Paul was widely seen as a bust before 2011 and then 2012. David Reed is in his third year and he has been marred by injuries.

I'm not a fan of David Reed, but I can't honestly discredit his impact, re-signing, or capabilities based off of the evidence that he hasn't yet contributed. That would be irrational of me.

Personally I dont see any point in David Reed either. In no facet can he be a regular contributor.

On special teams, we have multiple return aces now in Thompson and Jones so at best he is in a match with 2 others

He wont be breaking the WR depth chart any time soon

Coming off an acl.

He really to me is just another body.

Really don't understand how one can say that there is no way Reed will have an impact. There is little out there to support that idea. We'll see what Caldwell does with him. He could end up a really good slot receiver.

There's no concrete evidence to support either outcome.

I'm all for good debate, but provide some factual evidence here.  Multiple infractions?  He's had one and hasn't been a problem since.  Failure to break out?  He had limited opportunities and finally got his first chance as a receiver last year.  He actually played fairly well.  Personal foul flags?  Again, you're looking at the one game in Seattle.  Name another time he's had a personal foul that greatly affected the game.  His fumbles?  He's had 3 in his career, 2 in an abysmal game in Seattle.  That means he's only had 1 fumble outside of one game.

I'm with Grim in that I'm not the biggest fan of Reed.  I think he can contribute, and wouldn't be surprised to see him do it, but I'm not holding my breath.  However, bashing him based off of the one game you remember and providing no evidence to any other of these offenses is just ridiculous.
