Deonte Thompson straight from coach Harbaugh

As for IR, isn't there a process where they must clear waivers? I know Ballard was claimed that way but I can't remember the process.

Yeah I'm pretty sure they have to pass through waivers, but only before a certain date.  I'm not 100% certain on the rule, but the Giants tried to revert Ballard to IR in order to sign another guy to their 90 man roster.

Edit: Just looked it up.  If a player is placed on IR anytime before the final cutdown date, they must be exposed to waivers.  So, the day of final cuts, we can place anyone on IR with no issues.

Deonte and David Reed both high in that #2 WR list

Deonte props comming from Harbs, while Reed props comming from Decosta

Streeter/Mallette probably arent ready to be a full starter but i can see them getting a opportunity if and only if someone gets an injury

Tandon Doss has been given a opportunity last year several times (3 games in reg season, 4 full playoff games), but has been completely invisible on field when taking snaps.

Laquan Williams is probably the first one to be cut.   He was used in ST & KR/PR, but that role is pretty much filled in with rack of draft players crowding in the roster spot.

I see this #2 WR battle becoming Deonte & Reed's job @ the end.

I still think Doss is ahead of him on the dpeth chart and Streeter and Reed will push as well. OTAs really are just run throughs. The real competition starts in the mini-camps and TC obviously. I just dont think Thompson has shown enough for anyone to insert him as a starter at this juncture.

No, of course he hasn't shown enough YET. But he will, is what I'm saying. Reed is smaller and shiftier, and should be in the slot. I really like Tandon, but Deonte is faster, which is a benefit in what will likely be a two vertical set. Streeter just hasn't shown consistency with his hands.

Here's how I see it playing out.

Torrey is our #1.

Jacoby will be our occasional #2 but primary #3.

Deonte will be also our occasional #2 and won't play on the inside.

Doss will move around the field, but won't be the initial starter or have a huge playing time.

Reed will be our nickel WR, seeing time almost exclusively on the inside.

Streeter, Mellette, and Laquan will struggle to make the field or might be stashed PUP/IR if no one else gets injured this offseason.

I'm still maintaining that the WR core will be:

Torrey Smith, Jacoby Jones, Tandon Doss, Deonte Thompson, David Reed, and Tommy Streeter (in no order).

Mellette gets an "IR" year and LaQuan is cut.

i agree completely

id love for deonte to be a stud for us, jacoby doesnt need to be our #2 receiver, love jacoby but its a fact that hes inconsistent and drops passes. deonte is a similar type of receiver, as in hes a tall fast playmaker, and if that happens we can keep jacoby fresh for the return game.

id love for our 5wr sets to look like this:
torrey, deonte, jacoby (outside guys)
doss, pitta (slot guys)

or take one of the slot guys out and let ray stand around for the checkdowns, isolation from the speedy receivers = hey diddle diddle plays

I like that, but I'd add Juice in the slot too. There's so much the offense can do.

I don't really agree that Thompson will be that #2 receiver. I think Doss is better and more proven and Streeter has the most potential to be great. He flashed just as much ability last season as a WR as Thompson did. Reed and Thompson are both ST contributors so I think they will make the team, but Thompson is still very raw as well. It's going to be a great competition no doubt. I hope one or two guys really separate themselves so Joe has consistent WRs to work with. I'm not sure who that will be yet though.

Thompson was one of the best receivers IMHO during the preseason for the Ravens .

yeah he was awesome.

..but when regular season started...he tried KR/PR, situational WR...then we stopped using him after week 6 w/ no real production

hope he got better.   great player, but obviously needs work

I think this is exactly what happens. Except Labuan won't make the cuts.

I agree. I just don't know how LaQuan can make the cut but it is very possible. Doss, Jones, Reed & Thompson all can return. That's a lot of guys who can return. Reed has shown to be a gunner. That's good. The nice thing about LaQuan is he can do other things on ST, which those other guys just haven't shown me yet. Jacoby will be returning kicks unless something drastic happens. I think we don't want to use him as a #2 WR.

This position battle is truly going to be an exciting one to watch. I can't say I've been this excited for a group battle in a long time on this team. What makes it exciting is how even it is. Every WR offers something similar and yet something very different--all but Tommy Streeter, but nobody can compare to him physically; however, his skill is questionable and he may not offer anything on ST, which is a problem to an extent.

I just can't see the team cutting a draft pick, either. That's why I feel Streeter, Doss, & Mellette with even David Reed are safe--though we have made tough cuts before at the position. I can't see Doss going anywhere, though. Despite what people here think or see, he's a former 4th round pick selected by Flacco. I'd be stunned if he is cut.

I like Deonte the best out of the wr's we have.  Just has that raw playmaking ability that we've only got to see glimpses of in the NFL. Jacoby is also underrated and I think he can step his game up next year and cut out some of the drops. People forget Jacoby also had a game winning TD catch against the Eagles this year and the scab refs jobbed us with that OPI call. Was complete pandering to a rabid Philly crowd from the replacement bums . At least we didn't get Fail Mary'd like GB though.

Thompson has flashed play-making ability. My eye test told me he could play in pre-season but for some reason we never give young WR's a shot. Last year I could understand with Bolding, Torrey and Jones but this year theres no reason not to give them snaps

The reason for that **CAM CAMERON** is now gone so I foresee these guys getting their fair shake at starting.

I've been one of those people that believes LaQuan is the odd man out to make the roster. Let's also remember that Harbs always says that the best players will be on the field, so if LQ impresses a lot, there's a chance he makes it.

At first you say Doss is secure, then you say only 3 are secure and Doss isnt include.

Not sure if you think he is or isnt... But id say he is which leaves you with only 2 spots for the guys you mentioned.

my mistake

Speaking of Deonte, I was wondering if we should make a thread for OTAs to track the WRs/anyone else's progress for the offseason or if we should just wait for training camp.

I heard Tandon Doss and Tommy Streeter stood out at OTAs today.  Didn't hear anything about the other guys in competition for the #2/3 spot.

Also saw that Flacco really liked playing with the young receivers and showed no indication to wanting a vet WR, for what it's worth.

Going to be a great position battle..

You know it's wide open when everyone on the board is split on who will win the roster spots let alone who will start

Yep. It's going to be a really tough fight but the best part is that it will bring out the best in these players. They will need to play at their best in order to make the roster.

Where did you read this?

I'm really pulling for those two guys. I'm really pulling for Streeter due to his size and speed and Doss because everyone hates him it seems lol.

Might as well wait. All we're going to hear before then is how great they all look.

One of the Ravens' reporters Twitter page.  Can't remember who.  Doss apparently looked good over the middle and Streeter looked very strong off the line and fluid in route running.

Neither of them has proven anything yet, but last preseason got me really stoked over Deonte. He has huge potential, let's see if we can bring it out of him
