Deonte Thompson straight from coach Harbaugh

130 posts in this topic

This was my pick as well, he showed some flashes last year in training camp and in the preseason games he played.

Deonte Thompson might have the early inside track to start at wide receiver opposite Torrey Smith. "[Thompson] could sneak in there, he looks different, is fast and catches everything," Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said.

I would love to see Williams, Thompson, and Streeter turn it on in the OTAs and training camp and make the roster.

I made an earlier post talking about Thompson as our version of Victor Cruz. An undrafted WR who made some noise in the preseason. Then given a shot to play turned into a stud wr. I hope it pans out for the kid and us.

So wide receiver corps of Smith, Jones, Thompson, Streeter, Doss, Reed with Mellette on IR or possibly beating out another one of those guys for a spot.

Thompson has flashed play-making ability. My eye test told me he could play in pre-season but for some reason we never give young WR's a shot. Last year I could understand with Bolding, Torrey and Jones but this year theres no reason not to give them snaps

id love for deonte to be a stud for us, jacoby doesnt need to be our #2 receiver, love jacoby but its a fact that hes inconsistent and drops passes. deonte is a similar type of receiver, as in hes a tall fast playmaker, and if that happens we can keep jacoby fresh for the return game.

id love for our 5wr sets to look like this:
torrey, deonte, jacoby (outside guys)
doss, pitta (slot guys)

or take one of the slot guys out and let ray stand around for the checkdowns, isolation from the speedy receivers = hey diddle diddle plays

So it seems like Torrey Smith, Jacoby Jones, and Deonte Thompson are guaranteed spots.  Tandon Doss and David Reed (ST ability) are most likely next in line.  That leaves 1 spot for one of Streeter, Mellette, or Williams.

Both Streeter and Mellette have PS eligibility, wheres I don't believe Williams does.

Just because they have PS eligibility doesn't mean they'll make it.  They have to clear waivers.  I don't think there's any way Streeter would pass, and I'm not sure Mellette would either.

That would be great if he can contribute. I feel like LaQuan Williams could possibly be in the doghouse. Maybe it's just me but from the little I've seen of him I like him more than any other WR not named Torrey or Jacoby. Deonte & him are pretty much even in my opinion.

Laquan is just buried in depth, but it seems like the coaching staff likes him.

Sounds good. I liked what he showed last preseason. He has decent size and great speed. I don't think he could fill Boldin's role, but in 2WR sets, we would have a lot of speed on the field. I guess Pitta could take those short routes. But I think that 2nd WR will change a lot this year, based on play and formation. It would also help to keep the best return guy in the NFL last year in that role this year...

i had those same thoughts, there's talent everywhere and not all of it receives the attention it deserves so they go 'under the rader'

it just seems like this kid got it immediatly, cant teach the ability to learn and read defenses while remaining calm and being a to perform and make the catch, Deonte is the man until proven otherwise or someone over takes him

I feel like Streeter will make this team. He has the height that no other receiver on this team has. I understand that doesn't mean talent but he offers something that's very different from our other options at WR.

I don't really want someone to"fill boldins role". We can have a much more potent offense with a starting wideout with size as well as speed and can make more dynamic plays. Hicks/Cruz or Harrison/Wayne come to mind. Plus that suits the strength of our qb anyway. Rice and pitta can work underneath. They will actually be more effective win more defenders cleared out trying to defend Thompson and smith.

I too feel like he may make it, the way the coaches and FO spoke about him and the progress he made over the year at becoming a better pro...i think they believe he's a player, which at first i didnt believe he could become, too many drops, but who knows maybe like Torrey his rookie year he'll master the art of making the tough catch.

Secure

(Torrey, Deonte, Jacoby, Doss)

WRs I think may be in trouble depending on how many we keep(at least 6)

Guys like David Reed(even though he just resigned), LaQuan Willims, Gurly(sp?) and Streeter

If David Reed can't remain healthy I think the Ravens will cut him for someone who can and it could be a WR. LaQuan his rookie year made some amazing catches then not so much this year as he wasn't active a lot, not even for special teams. Although I like him he could be gone. I don't know about this Gulry? Gurly? guy to have much of an opinion other than he's not making it. Now this kid Mellette will prove he belongs in training camp and preseason. BELIEVE it

So we got 1. Torrey, 2. Thompson 3.Jacoby  ....positives to make team

We're left with David Reed, Mellette, Streeter, LaQuan and a couple UDFA who may have a chance for PS.

I'll say we're keeping 6 wideouts, 3 are taken already, so between Reed, Mellette, LaQuan, and Streeter I'm going to say we end up keeping Torrey, Deonte, Jacoby, Reed, Streeter, and Mellette

Yet another reason to thank Cam Cameron, he never trusted younger WR unless they blew his doors off like Torrey did. Once Caldwell took over the younger guys got some playing time, so I expect that will remain the smae going forward now.

Gurily was cut I believe, just a side note ;)

I think the last few spots on the WR will be more based on special teams, that was how LaQuan made the team to begin with, it will be interesting to see how Mellette aclimates to not being the No. 1 WR on the team and playing more ST.

Thompson will start week 1! I guarantee you this.

I'm willing to wager he doesn't start week 1. I like his potential, but that's avery bold statement to be guaranteeing. I think there is lots of competition.

Not sure if you think he is or isnt... But id say he is which leaves you with only 2 spots for the guys you mentioned.

It's possible that we line up Jacoby opposite Torrey to start the Broncos game, but I would bet that Deonte plays significant time on the outside and in essence is the true #2 because he'd push Jacoby inside. (I'm expecting a lot of 3 receiver sets.) As long as Thompson doesn't get hurt, I'll wager that he's this year's Albert McClellan or 2011 Cary Williams.

I'm still maintaining that the WR core will be:

Torrey Smith, Jacoby Jones, Tandon Doss, Deonte Thompson, David Reed, and Tommy Streeter (in no order).

Mellette gets an "IR" year and LaQuan is cut.

The only WRs on our roster I have confidence in is Thompson and LaQuan aside from Torrey. Jacoby is a good 3rd receiver.. Mellette and Streeter are both unknowns at this point and Doss needs more work.

I still think Doss is ahead of him on the dpeth chart and Streeter and Reed will push as well. OTAs really are just run throughs. The real competition starts in the mini-camps and TC obviously. I just dont think Thompson has shown enough for anyone to insert him as a starter at this juncture.

I remember Deonte last preseason, where he was burning some cornerbacks with his speed. Speed kills, but with hands, it's lethal.

I don't think Williams will make the team this year.I didn't even he know was still on the roster until I read some of the comments in here.Smith,Jones,Doss,Reed and either Thompson,Mellette or Streeter will be our 5 wrs this year.Unless we bring in a vet or more than one of the later 3 have a Cruz type of camp and preseason,I don't see that changing.I don't agree with putting Reed and Doss in there, but we just gave Reed the type of contract that will help him make the roster and we seem to be forcing Doss into our offense.Reed would leave us with half a million in dead cap if he was cut and with Doss being a 4th round pick there is no way we'll cut him this soon.

I think Smith, Thompson, Jones, Doss, Streeter, Reed - all of them get a good amount of game time (except maybe Reed). I think Laquan will be cut unfortunately, I like him but he'll be a victim of too much depth. Mellette spends a year on IR. Then next year, if some of them don't produce, we'll see a bit of a clearout with a new bunch of WRs coming in.

I'm very interested in seeing the position battle. As I said, this is a tight race. Right now, I see multiple wide receivers with very similar skill sets, in my opinion.

David Reed and Deonte Thompson offer very similar skills related to their game with somewhat similar styles of play.

Aaron Mellette and Tandon Doss have very similar skill sets, in my opinion. Mellette seems a bit faster than Doss though I don't see Doss as slow.

Streeter has a completely different skill set than any other.

I you said, scrock, I think it will be a tight battle. Someone good will not make the team.

As for IR, isn't there a process where they must clear waivers? I know Ballard was claimed that way but I can't remember the process.
