Remote Control Airplanes, helicopters, quadcopters....

Well ive been throwing around this idea for a bit but i dont know much about any of the above.  I would really like to get a quadcopter but not too sure how much im looking at.  Im a beginner and would like something that flies rather than a car.  So any input guys?

Bought my boys one of those helicopters at the kiosks in the mall. An $80 jobber and its freakin' cool as hell. Little tough to learn to fly at the beginning, but cool nonetheless.

I always thought that'd be a cool hobby to get into, I never spent time researching though. They can get ridiculously expensive, thats all I know haha.

Just skip to the inevitable evolution of the premise and purchase a drone.  You can get them now.
