Sign Troy Smith

Will we see a Boller thread prior to camp?

Lord I hope not. This place just about burned down when we brought him in for a mere workout. Smh.

Why not just title this thread "Potential backup quarterbacks" to avoid future threads when this one gets locked or dies to prevent an additional topic in the future? We could even create a "Ravens should trade for/sign _____ _______" so it could be all-encompassing.

Troy was doing well in our system and I feel that Ozzie and Harbs wanted to give him a chance to start with another team and he got that chance with a familiar coach in San Fran however it fell through for him with Singltary being fired later. Troy is a Raven. Matt Flynn, TJ Yates, David Carr...and yes even the God Awful Mark Sanchez have had their chances. Like before, I called for Tebow, when a valid answer as to why we should not sign Tebow I conceded to THE MODs and the thread was locked. You shouldn't lock a thread because people are making clown posts with no substance opposing the idea. Troy is a gamer with known skills.
Address the point with some meaningful input not just "I" don't want him.

Why did I concede my position on signing Tebow? A poster mentioned that he would always be pushing to start and that would not be acceptable since we already have our starter, a Raven in every sense of the word, Cool Joe Flacco Superbowl MVP.

Tyrod Taylor is IMO a more viable option than Troy Smith right now, if Smith was brought into training camp Taylor would beat him for the backup job. Taylor is already familiar with Caldwell and current players and more dynamic than Smith.

He couldn't start for the Omaha UFL team and was a camp arm for the Steelers last year lol

I put no stock in the UFL. Steelers have had one good quarterback since Terry Bradshaw and they got lucky drafting Big Ben. He was a no brainer. Troy made some risky choices while trying to stay active in his pursuit of another chance at the NFL. I remember Johnny Unitas played semi pro football and 3rd string in Pittsburgh. Kurt Warner played for the Arena League and was stocking shelves in a grocery store. I'll stop here since you made a valid point.

To be honest, though. Although I feel Tyrod is a good backup, in the sense of running the scout team offense and being a team player kind of guy...

I don't think he's my ideal pick for backup QB. I was somewhat impressed with Caleb Hanie when I first saw him play for Chicago in the playoffs, but then he quickly ruined that impression of him. I don't want someone who's tried.

I like what the Patriots did with Matt Cassel. They drafted him in the 7th round. He sat the bench for four years without having to start, until Tom Brady went down in week 1 of 2008. No one saw that coming, but they were still prepared. Cassel took them to a winning season, then they traded him for the 34th overall pick.

Not bad.

What I'm saying is, I'd like to have a guy out there who is a boom/bust type player that in case of Flacco's injury could do enough to warrant another team wanting him as their starting QB. I don't see Tyrod Taylor being that guy. We need a backup who can make all the throws.

Heres the thing, both of those guys were starters at the sub pro level. He couldn't even start at that level which is just sad.

The clear and obvious difference is that Kurt Warner never played in the NFL before playing for the Arena League. He never had an opportunity to play in the NFL. Troy had several opportunities.
