So, what do networks do? They focus on the teams that will bring in the widest audience: 1) the ones with the largest media markets; 2) the ones with the most drama; and 3) the ones with the biggest stars. It's not about who's the best; it's about who gives the networks the best stories from which they profit.

 

It's not fair, but in a profit-driven industry like broadcasting, that's exactly how it works. As a result, the quality of analysis on the national level suffers because broadcasters are never able to master their knowledge of any singular team the way that a local beat writer or homer can -- they just simply don't have the time.

 

So, why do controversial analysts and commentators like Skip Bayless say the things that they say? Profit and ratings. Pure and simple. They're not able to familiarize themselves enough with the topic at hand, but will find a hook and push it as far as it can go, simply for entertainment.
