QB Coach?

34 posts in this topic

So with Caldwell as OC we have no QB Coach right now right? Or is Caldwell acting as both the way Cam did that one year? Im just curious if anyone thinks that maybe we'd hire Jim Zorn back since Flacco seemed to like him and he's currently unemployed.

It's Caldwell's job. If he was good enough for Peyton he's good enough for our guy ;)

I'm all for bringing in great football minds to coach up our guys but there is a lot of truth to the old saying, "too many cooks in the kitchen."

The big thing I had in the past with a QB coach was to get someone who wasn't Cam in Joe's ear.  Cam is gone, and Jim seems to be just fine handling the dual role.

Until Jim Caldwell proves that he is unable to both coach Flacco and direct the offense, he deserves the opportunity to do both.

No need. Jim coaches and picks the plays THROUGH Joe, who gets final say - to my knowledge. Isn't he also a QB fundamentals guy?

I would like to see us bring one in for the simple fact that Caldwell will most likely get another HC job in the coming years. Caldwell could potentially groom his successor, instead of having to start from scratch.

I too am slightly concerned about who may be our future OC..I think Caldwell can firmly hold down QB coach and OC duties but as we saw at the end of last year he can really elevate and work with his players well, which will likely line him up for a HC job. The only reason I do not see him have a shot is because of his age and the movement in the NFL to hiring young or up and coming college coaches..

But if he does go and he deserves another HC job of the guys in-house I really like Jim Hostler the WR coach for the position. He has done a great job developing Torrey Smith and it will be interesting to see how the other young WRs this year are 'coached up' and perform. From what I know he calls the plays into Joe so he has a 'feel' for playcalling and was a OC before.

Any other guys who may have worked with Harbaugh before? I do like the idea of bringing Zorn back but I just dont see it happening.

I'm waiting on a call

I told Oz about somebody from Kent County and I guess he thought I meant one of the high school kids.

I'll get it squared away though. Don't worry!!

Jim Zorn is available.

Flacco had his best career stats when Zorn was his QB Coach. However, he did get released when there was a power struggle between Cam Cameron and him.

2010 - 93.6 QB Rating - 62.6% - 3622 Yards - 25 TDs - 10 Ints

However, I feel there could be a philosophical difference with Zorn, since his philosophy is on mobility and the west coast offense, which emphasize on feet quickness and quick release. Joe Flacco is built as a pocket passer and the vertical game.

Im not so sure on Jim Hostler being a offensive coordintor and the last time he was a offensive coordinator he wasnt really good at it . He can definately improve as  a coordintor  since its probably been about 7 years since he was a offensive coordinator for the 49ers

Firing Jim Zorn was a mistake.

I'm kind of skeptical on Hostler too. Aside from Torrey, we haven't seen much development out of our young WRs. This should be the year that we see it, but I would be reluctant to have him calling plays.

I've said a long time ago that I'm displeased with Hostler. We'll see what happens. I'm not sold on him. Yeah, Torrey worked out but I remember reading an article one where he said he hated Torrey as a prospect because of something. I forget why.

I attribute Smith's success to himself and Boldin and Mason more than Hostler.

It's hard to see Hostler's impact considering how little we've actually seen the young WRs. This year, we will be able to tell.

I don't remember anybody saying he was "great", though he occasionally called a good game. About the best anyone around here ever said was "he's not THAT bad; he does win a lot of games".

The words Cam Cameron and great were never used in the same sentence. Except for maybe "it's great that we fired Cam Cameron!!" Lol

Why do you think Juan Castillo was hired? For that very reason I believe - to understand the Ravens offense and take over should Jim Caldwell get hired as HC! Steve Spagnuolo the same thing for defense! The Ravens have the best system of succession in the NFL at least in terms of assuring game plan continuity!

let caldwell do his thing. hes gonna coach our qb to be his OWN coordinator. joes proven time and time again that in the no-huddle, when he calls his own plays, he is a better qb, and most of the time, he in unstoppable under those circumstances, and caldwells forte is the no huddle and vertical game, placing someone between joe and jim would be incredibly counterproductive, its not like we need a middle man to seperate him from idiot cam anymore
