The next playmaker?

70 posts in this topic

Legit. At the end of the Super Bowl with him running back and fourth in the end zone, that was some serious playmaker mentality.

It wasn't all about Koch, though. His blockers put in effort, too. It takes a serious playmaker mentality to hold 11 people without getting called even once.

More like the blockers hold pretty well.

It was a calculated decision since holding in the endzone is a safety anyways. Our team used everything including penalties to win the game. That's the difference between a winning or losing the Super Bowl.

I can't wait until the Wolfpack runs it in for a TD on a trick play like we did in the superbowl. Morgan snaps it to Koch, Koch takes off running to the left, now options to JTuck on a lateral, Koch lays a CB OUT with a huge block, Tucker with a juke on Polamalu. Touchdown RAAAAVVEEENNNNNNNS

That game gave me faith in Harbaugh going forward. The testicular fortitude to run the fake kick(which would have converted if not for a drop the play before) and the smarts to tell your guys to hold was brilliant. We also saw throughout the playoffs that he has confidence in Flacco which is a must I feel for a winning team.

Now for the thread. I think think Brown will become a playmaker on defense. I think the Ravens can turn him into their own Daryl Washington. Also added Doom who will have an impact even if he's not the one doing getting credit. Opens up for the rest of the d line and rushers. On offense already had Torrey. Like others though I'm going to say KO because he'll help both running and passing and looks like he can become dominant. You can't underestimate the ability to keep your qb clean while opening holes for your rb.

Jimmy and Art Jones didn't hold.  They tried to block, and that's why we had 7 seconds left.   STEP IT UP 22

Yea, Harbs' understanding of the rulebook and situations is amazing. Just like the Bruce Miller "hold" on the runback which is actually legal as long as the player doesn't go to the ground. Flukey rule but the fact that our guys have been coached to understand those types of things gives us a competitive edge.

That's why it's great to have a Head Coach that isn't in the weeds calling plays on O and D. He can establish the big picture vision and then dig into the details that take us from good to great. It's going to be awesome to watch Harbs work with talent in all phases. Each one of his teams thus far has had atleast one major flaw and he's still taken us to the playoffs. God football season needs to get here.

Maybe I'm alone here, but I think it was/is Lardarius Webb.

Like Michael Jackson said "You are not alone"

But then again, he already IS the playmaker [move over Michael Irvin].

Ray Rice has done a tremendous job of being our best play maker the past few years. He may have been overshadowed by Benard Pierce down the stretch but he is still the engine that keeps the offense going.

Jacoby Jones wasn't drafted by us but he literally won us a few games this year. He is definitely not the most gifted receiver but he is a natural playmaking football player.

Next in line, I'd have to go with the easy pick in Matt Elam. His energy, passion, speed, and physicality make him a top candidate for the title of our next great playmaker.

btw Yanda technically IS a playmaker. Remember that extra push in the Denver game that gave Rice the first down? :D

Simply put we haven't had one past few years.    A role player? yes, A blue chip player?? yes, a good, but not great ? Yes.    But no 'Play-maker'

We've had whole bunch of 'blue chip role players' throughout the draft past 5 years.  But non with a recognizable household name outside of b-more.   Where is our play making pro-bowler?  A guy that completely surprises us and takes away the game?

I think its about time we see another 'play-maker'.  Someone that will be a household name for years to come.  A surprise pick that exceeds expectation & be a immediate starting pro-bowl candidate.

Whose going to surprise us this year?  The last 'great' one was Ngata.  We need someone to step up and be that guy.

Matt Elam with +80 tackles and 7 picks?  Arthur Jones with +130 tackles this season?   Brandon Williams that gets 2 men every play and 7 sacks?  Dave Simon with solid +50 tackles and 5 sacks?  Juice with 500 yards, 5 TDs and a probowl FB?

GET IT DONE 2013 draft!  RAVENS LETS ROLL!  HIGH EXPECTATIONS BABY

Was the original intent to ask who will be the Ravens MVP for the 2013 season? The only potential non-playmaker who gets a significant amount of snaps would be Michael Oher. You could probably dump Jah Reid in that camp? But damnear everybody that is left from last season that got pt is a playmaker. Confident that Josh Bynes and Albert Mac could get in and play beastmode or lockdown.

I know I know, there are only so many ways one can talk about "repeat"

Joe Thomas - Generally considered best O-lineman in game.

Adrian Peterson - Generally considered best running back in game.

Calvin Johnson - Generally considered best wide receiver in game.

JJ Watt - Generally considered best d-lineman in game.

Darrelle Revis - Generally considered best DB in game.

Rob Gronkowski/Jimmy Graham/Tony Gonzales - 3 way tie for best TE in game.

Patrick Willis - Generally considered best ILB in game.

DeMarcus Ware - Generally considered best OLB in game.

This list of 'play-makers' combined Super Bowl wins: 0

Silly thread with several flawed premises.

Great point, and I'd like to add to that point as well.

Most of those players were chosen in the top 15 with only the TE group bucking the trend.

The Ravens haven't chosen that high since Flacco, and that's the best of problems to have.

No playmakers??  Seriously the Ravens don't make plays?

How quickly we forget about Ray Rices 4th and 29 in San Diego, and Torrey Smiths dominance of Champ Bailey in the AFCDG.  Let's ignore the fact that Jacoby Jones returned the ball to the house regularly, and finally lets forget about the man with the strongest arm in the NFL in Joe Flacco.

Other than that you're right, the Ravens really needed to get more playmakers.  It sure would be nice if we could get a guy like Elvis Dumervil, and a new playmaking safety in the draft.  But oh wait we did go out and grabbed one of the best pass rushers to pair with another recent DPOY, and we did draft a possible blue chipper in Matt Elam!!

The future is bright in Baltimore, make no mistakes about it!!

Eh. I like the call to hold, but not the way it turned out with the refs. I feel like it would have been better if the refs had called the line for holding and announced that the penalty was a touchback anyway and let the game continue. There failure to call anything just makes the Ravens look bad.

What i want to see is a player in our uniform that is the best of his class

We haven't had one in a while.

plenty of great role players and blue chip players that fits our scheme.   But no one that is 'the best' @ their position.

I think its time we see one soon

Do we have a guy that is universally thought of as the "best" at a position, no but I think we have serveral guys that could be argued to be near the top whether its Rice, Yanda or KO (easily best Guard Tandem in the League), Ngata, Webb (if he recovers from his injury), and of course Flacco.

Hey we do have Leach who is, without a doubt, the best FB in the game right now!

The answer is L.Webb, quite honestly he should have been a pro-bowler 2 years ago. Webb had a complete year as a CB, he played strong in run support, had INTs, didn't allow any TDs and he even recorded a sack.
That same season Champ Bailey missed several games, didn't record as many tackles or INTs.

Webb picked up where he left off at the start of this year but then suffered that ACL Tear.

And I'll be honest I thought that McPhee was going to be the next Pro-Bowler but injuries prevent his development..

Dark Horse, could be B.Pierce just got stronger and stronger throughout the season, but with Ray Rice ahead of him it could stunt his growth potential.

You're not really saying much of anything.  Seriously, you gotta open your eyes and read some of these comments.  DO you know that a "blue chip" player is a first team all pro??  Do you realize that Ngata, Suggs, Rice, and Yanda all fit that blue chip description?  I'd make an arguement for Flacco, Pitta, and Webb as well but I digress....

How do you get a player that is the best of their position and the best of their class?  By drafting in the top 10, and the only way we are going to get close to doing that is by losing half our games.  Even then there is no guarantee that top 10 draft pick is going to become the best at their position.

Furthermore, who do you put into this "Best of the position" class that is in the NFL?  I bet you that those players really are only arguably the best of their position.

So what you want is totally unrealistic.  Once upon a time we had 2 players (Lewis, and Reed) in the prime of their HOF careers.  Yet we only won our division once in the 10 years they played here together.

Lastly, what makes you think that one of the guys we are devolping wont become a hall of fame level player?  A lot of our guys have tons of upside and the most obvious is Joe Flacco.  Believe me if he keeps up this kind of production he will be in a class of his own.

A DE with 130+ tackles seems a bit absurd... Also, Dave Simon? Lol c'mon man.

I hope Arthur Jones gets 130+ tackles. If he does, he's going to set a record. He might get us a 1st round compensatory selection and there is no such thing. Lol.

Imagine a DT/DE getting 130+ tackles. He would win DPOY easily. There wouldn't even be a question. The Ravens would probably trade Ngata if that happened.

Am I the only one who thinks Dennis Pitta is one of the best players we have on offense? I hear a lot of whining about how the Baltimore Ravens are doomed, how we lost Boldin and nobody on this team can fight for the ball & make those ridiculous catches. I keep hearing a barrage of statements like "Oh NO!!!! Who on this team will replace the almighty Anquan Boldin! The WR who was so tightly covered you'd think the referees would throw out citations for pick-pocketing and not PI. The WR who was so slow he made Terrence Cody look fast! The WR who was physical as anything but dropped balls like--well, I'll leave it at that".

Sorry to get carried away here, but I feel like Anquan Boldin is a false idol and I'm not afraid to say it. Dennis Pitta is highly underrated and I hate to say it but even by people who claim to be fans of the Baltimore Ravens. I don't know why people don't realize this. Perhaps they're too busy watching games & complaining about how things but do you guys know that Leon Hall was matched up against Dennis Pitta? Leon Hall got beat as if Dennis Pitta was Metallica & Hall was the drum.

Don't believe me!  Here are pictures to prove my point:

This is a dang good football player we have here in Baltimore. When Steve Biscotti said Jimmy Smith would replace Ed Reed, that wasn't meant as a direct analogy. That was meant throughout the entire franchise. Sometimes we take things too literally. Dennis Pitta will replace Anquan Boldin. Mark my words. I am willing to bet people will be like "Dude, I'm glad we traded Boldin!" Some of them will admit they were against it before. Some will never say they were ever against it. That comes with being a fan.

Just try to realize that the FO of Ozzie Newsome, Steve Biscotti, Eric DeCosta & John Harbaugh are some of if not the very best front office in the entire NFL & perhaps even all of sports in what they do. They know when to move on from a player. They understand a player's true worth.

playmaker as in makes awesome plays and makes the toughest plays when we need it most? hmm ill go in order by draft years..

flacco, rice, kruger, webb, pitta, pierce.

and thats not counting guys like yanda and osemele who are pretty much elite at their position but dont have a chance to be a playmaker, and we have yet to see what guys like doss, upshaw, dickson, etc. can really do with a good number of snaps.

and dont say kruger pitta or pierce arent playmakers, pitta got the name american express for a reason, he makes tough clutch catches in crucial moments, kruger gets 4th quarter strips against peyton in the playoffs, goal line sacks in the super bowl, and was always where the ball was making a play on it. pierce had a unbelievable knack for breaking contact, getting a crucial first down, and then flying downfield, running over/jumping over multiple defenders, the guy is a breakout player this year.

but if i had to disregard that statement and just answer the question, id say elam will be our next playmaker, i think hes in store for a pro bowl rookie year, he is going to look like troy polamalu in his prime from day one. but i think the 2 "best" players from this draft, the guys that only ravens fans will realize how important they are, will be brandon williams and john simon, i think those guys will be jamie sharper and sam adams for us, they will be unsung heroes and will be very critical for our defense to be elite

amen brother, a-freaking-men. people seem to forget about all of boldins drops and the way he disappeared from the face of the earth for 2-3 game stretches. one postseason run doesnt make up for 3 years of lackluster averageness(its not a word i know) and pitta can do everything and more that boldin can do, pitta is faster, quicker, just as tough, bigger, stronger, smarter, more athletic, jumps higher, better hands, more consistent, AND is best buds on and off the field with joe. this guy is brilliant as a TE or as a slot guy, he knows how to get open, at least get open long enough to give himself a chance, and if pitta has a chance, hes getting that ball. we will forget boldin ever left with a combination of pitta and doss(doss is just my guy i think is primed to breakout)

Speak the truth brother! I'm glad I am not the only one going I sane with the boldin barrage and saying how this prospect and that will be the next boldin. Well why would we want another boldin. I have much higher hopes for our receivers. Pitta is a prime example.

One thing I always wondered with Pitts was why he was always running this really slow developing out route? It was very difficult to complete because it was so slow developing. Hopefully Caldwell chucks that one from the play book.
