Tavon Austin: Everyone is asking for money

14 posts in this topic

I know this is a bit odd of a topic but I have to feel sorry for Tavon, who is also a Baltimore Native who has already said that he's had people come out of the woodwork asking for money.

Everybody expects a lot of things from you as far as money,” Austin told the Rams’ website. “Everybody wants to be around you. My phone doesn’t stop ringing now. It feels like they’re counting my bank account now. So that’s probably the hardest thing for me right now, just people.”
“I’ve got a lot of cousins now,” Austin said. “The whole [city of] Baltimore is my cousin now. We’re going to just try to keep focused and let my mother and all of them handle it.”

This is why you never tell anyone when you win the lottery, everyone will be coming to you for money. Unfortunately for Tavon, he is in the NFL where he will be in the public eye from now until the end of his career.

I definitely like his attitude about it and he knows not to fall into the trap of gold diggers.

Poor kid. That sucks but it's to be expected. Austin's a really good guy. Sorry to see he has to go through those things. It happens. That's a part of the NFL.

This is why i dislike their money and salaries being public.

True. It shouldn't be public knowledge how much a player is getting or anyone for that matter. Being the public eye is intrusive enough as is.

There's a really good 30 for 30 documentary called "Broke" and it's about how guys like Austin will file for bankruptcy so soon after their careers (it was based on Bernie Kosar, but there are a ton of pro athletes in the same position). A big part of that is how the players don't actually earn as much as you think, because the reports that say "this guy makes X million per year" doesn't factor in stuff like taxes, incentives or guaranteed money. They also find themselves in a situation where they don't earn a cent for some years to one where they earn the most they'll ever earn and they haven't been able to adjust to the stresses of having lots of money.

This shouldn't be surprising. He needs to cut all ties with people who weren't close to him before he went to College, these people will be a drain on him for the rest of his career.

Seriously, Tavon should get in touch with Jalen Rose. There are tons of athletes that handle their business well off the field but I've never heard from one in the media who's as informative and entertaining as Jalen. His podcasts with Grantland are some of the best sports-related videos on Youtube.

Greed is part of human nature.

It's a tough situation to be in and a lot of athletes went bankrupted due to their generous donations.

All I can say is that you can't feed everyone, but modesty and planning is a must for financial success.

However, a bunch of money-needy family members aren't the ones that kill money, it's con-men who advise your money on phony investments that destroys lives.
