A. Q. Shipley acquired from Colts

Compensation is not yet revealed. Per Jason LaCanfora on Twitter. He plays center. I can't imagine we surrendered a Draft pick. I'm guessing we traded a player.

Scratch that. We apparently did surrender a late (7th) round draft pick for the previous 2009 draft pick by the Colts. Guess we won't be going to the FA pool for a center.

well that's the vet back-up at C sorted then, might be a conditional 7th if he gets to be on the roster week 1

Yeah. That's what I'm hearing. A little surprised but not too much. A 7th rounder is hardly any compensation.

Text says the draft pick is conditional

The Ravens have acquired center A.Q. Shipley, pending passing a physical, from the Indianapolis Colts in exchange for a conditional 2014 draft pick.

He was drafted by the Steelers and has floated around the league as a back-up / PS guy.

PFF gave him a sterling +6.9 in his playing time last year. Could be solid depth if nothing else.

Colts fans seem upset and that's all I can ask for. I don't know much about the player per se but we were bound to grab another center at some point, be it through free agency or via trade.

FWIW.....

Jeff Zrebiec ‏@jeffzrebiecsun 8m Shipley was on Eagles practice squad in 2010 and obviously knows Juan Castillo.

Well we know he's hungry

I'd love to see him challenge McKinnie and Cody to a chicken wing eating contest.

I think this is a sold pickup. It may seem like a small move, but let's not forget that James Harrison, Kelly Gregg and Jeff Saturday were all guys that failed to make rosters before becoming solid starters. That being said, he at least provides depth at this point.

I remember him coming out of college, he played with serious attitude...which I always like. It makes sense to use your practice squad on rookies that likely won't start. This guy has had a couple years in the league to get some experience and go against NFL competition. He's also a known commodity since Castillo knows the guy.

I heard he was nick named T-rex due to his huge body and short arms.

Lol. Nice.

I just hope he isn't just another nose picking bald guy on the bench!

People will inevitably point to this trade as a sign we are not happy with Gradkowski. I think it is more likely that after rookie minicamp our coaches realized that 6th rounder Ryan Jensen isn't quite there yet. He is a small school guy after-all. Jensen will probably end up on the practice squad and Shipley will be the backup center but provide good competition in the meantime.

"@aqshipley The annoying thing is we were working on a piece where you were a possible Secret Superstar for the Colts. Had to scrap that now" via PFF

Well that bodes well.

I remember when he was coming out of Penn St. and I absolutely loved him, clearly he did not turn into the player I thought he would be but from what i remember he is one of those tough, scrappy, hard working players. Should fit the Harbaugh vibe well and I agree with most others he will provide much needed depth behind Gradkowski...I am surprised with this move though as I thought we had great depth inside..

Same here regarding our interior depth. From the sound of it, it appears he could cost nothing if he doesn't make the team. It sounds more like a guy we brought in here to push Gino as others said. If Gino isn't ready to start then we don't miss a beat. It's really exciting.
