Breakout player of the year award goes to...

162 posts in this topic

I can think of a few reasons of why he won't put it together. Not saying it's definitive, but the odds are against him.

Why are the odds against him. The coaches clearly think highly of him and he has the most physical talent of any WR on the roster. Granted, he is raw and hasn't had the opportunity some of the other WRs have had, but none of the other guys have really impressed all that much. I think he will get just as much of an opportunity as any other.

Its going to be David Reed.

Our FO(especially Decosta) believe in this guy. As well as our coaches who are vouching for him. Even with him recovering from an injury and with few key players leaving and getting cut, our FO surprised us by giving him a 2-year deal. I think that is indication that they clearly see something in him that we havent seen on field yet.

His the best candidate to be a 'break-out' star.

Another breakout star imo is Osemele. As soon as he settled on being a guard in playoffs our O-line got clearly better. I think he has the size, power and skillset to play both LT & Guard. Eventually we are going to test Osemele as a LT on this upcomming season, and he will play above expectation.

I'm going with Doss. The opportunity is there with Boldin gone and I think he'll step up and make that spot his own.

60+ catches, 800+ yards, 7TDs

Because he is a raw, sixth round player. He's basically a project player.

Aside from Torrey, they are all raw.

I can't complete agree. Doss is a very refined player from a technical aspect. He has hands, and he can run routes well. Jacoby isn't too raw either.

The rest may be raw, but Streeter is the least developed by far.

I dont agree with all the love Streeter gets. He was IR'd last uear because he struggled a lot. Raw is definitely a good word to describe him.
Reminds me so much of james hardy.

But i would love to see a guy with his size and speed pan out for us. Flacco would put up insane numbers with a guy like that, Torrey and Pitta

Jacoby I would agree with, but his hands are not great. Doss has better hands and runs decent routes, so I guess hr isn't "raw". Streeter is no more so than Thompson or LaQuan though, and Mellette is coming out of a small school where he didn't face top notch competition. Tommy was IRed because the coaches wanted to stash him, they could have easily put him on the PS, but they knew another team would take him. He has more upside than other WR easily and had decent college production for being so raw.

Have to agree with you there. But, new year, new hopes.

In college football, you can dominate the competition as a "raw" player. If you're a freak athlete with height and weight then you're golden. Other then that, I definitely agree with what you said. He probably has the most upside of all our WRs, even Torrey. The question is whether or not he will develop. He needs to get hands, learn how to catch in traffic, and learn how to run routes. I'd like  him to bulk up a little too. He's one of my favorite prospects, but I can't say the odds are in his favor when he is the least developed WR on the roster.

I can't say this definitively, but when the coaches say that he is developing nicely, I assume those aspects are all areas where he is getting better. I don't expect him to be a finished product by any means, but I also don't expect him to be just a year older. He has had time to work on route-running, and improving his hands, strength, and knowledge if the offense.

I would love nothing more than to see Tommy 6'5 Streeter catching TD's from Joe Cool. I hope he, Tandon, and Michael Oher step up this year.

I dont think that calling a guy 'raw' really qualifies as bashing him

No.. Even better

Flacco throws for under 300 yards (gets 295), Proving he is inferior.

With our additions this off season I believe 100% that Lardarius Webb receives his first Pro Bowl nomination. Notice I said nomination not performance. Lol. He'll be busy in the Super Bowl.

Without Revis there won't be as much competition for the nomination.

Jose Cheeseborough, anyone? Seriously though, what a name.

Adrian Hamilton, maybe. He's kind of a long shot because we have quite a bit of depth, but he could become a rotational guy that could make an impact. Just trying to think outside the box.

I like everyone else's picks too, I second them all. I also like that there are so many players on our roster with this kind of potential.

Lose a game? If someone drops a pass or if Joe throws an INT, they're automatically the worst player. I remember people giving up on Torrey because he dropped a few passes in preseason. If Joe overthrew him, Torrey "gave up on a play." A lot of people on here fancy themselves experts.

ANYWAYS, back on topic. I'm pullin for Doss. He's spent so much time under Boldin and hasn't had enough snaps to prove what he can do. Then again, maybe it'll be Juice. Defensively, I see Brandon Williams pulling in front of Terrence Cody. Overall, I hope the whole team has a breakout season so we can get a repeat. I'm not predicting anyone except Brandon WIlliams just because he's in better shape than Cody and seems to have a better work ethic.

I think on offense it will be Ed Dickson because he may be used more frequently in Caldwell's offense. He'll need to hit the jugs machine though for this to come to fruition.

On defense I think it will be Arthur Jones. My prediction is he will win the starting spot over Spears and become a dominant force next to Ngata (who is reported to be playing mostly NT this year).

I was trying to explain this to my coworker and the only words I could use to explain it were myopic and neurotic.

I'm thinking it will be a tight battle between Thompson & Williams for the WR spot. I have a feeling both will shine.
