LB John Simon

I can see this. Being open-minded, nobody really saw the Ravens changing McPhee's position, so it's entirely possible they decide to switch Upshaw from OLB to 3-4DE or DT.

I'm talking future.. and Upshaw definitely could have a future as a 3-4 DE. He could also continue being an OLB and be fine, but he could easily bulk up to 290-295 at 6'2 and a half and be a very stout DE. If somehow Arthur Jones doesn't get resigned, I bet that would be a possibility. I'm not saying it would happen.. but Upshaw as a 3-4 DE makes a lot more sense than just your average "oh, so and so could play this position" when they really can't. I do agree that Simon is not ILB material, but Upshaw could be a solid DE if the coaching staff decided he should play that.

It still isn't going to happen.  Upshaw is going to be a 3-4 OLB.

Again, he probably won't be as good a 5-technique as an actual 5-technique.  He just doesn't really have the frame for it.  He'd get mauled.

Doesn't have the frame for it? First off, you have no clue whether it "will happen" or "won't happen" so passing a final judgement on the matter doesn't really fall in your hands. Second off, he absolutely has the frame for it.. and he could very well have a Corey Liuget type of body and type of impact.

Of course I know!

Dude... I'm John Harbaugh!

But I don't mean to sound brash (I'm at work in a call center typing between calls).  But I am almost certain, he's a good OLB, they're not going to risk his quality OLB play to see if he can play 5.  Liegut is a good comparison, but even then Liuget is still a longer, higher hipped guy.  More what you'd expect from a five, Upshaw is more compact.

I would prefer he stay at OLB.. I love his ability to set the edge (even though he didn't do so well last night). I'm just saying if they did move him next year, I wouldn't be devastated because I feel like he could succeed at DE and with having Suggs, Dumervil, and Simon at OLB.. I wouldn't feel like it was completely lost. I agree though, I would prefer he stay at OLB.

See that makes sense.  I wouldn't be shocked, but it'd be weird.

I also doubt we can resign Arthur Jones.  He just seems like that guy who's going to blow up.

I agree, unfortunately.  I think we've invested in guys like KLM and Pericak for the future as hopeful replacements for Jones.

Kid's gonna ball this year though man.  I really like our front 3.

Yeah. It's going to be tough to keep Arthur and all signs point to him being gone next year, IMO. We've invested much into the DL recently. Unless we're cutting Spears and making big changes again next year, I just can't see how we can afford him. We're already giving Ngata a lot of money. I don't know how we can invest into Jones, Smith (both), Dickson, Pitta, etc. if they do even better than they have or live up to their hype. Smith especially has me concerned.

We also have DeAngelo Tyson, who has looked pretty good. I can see us bring back Cody on the cheap if he has a decent year. If he has a great year then there's no way we'll bring him back but I don't think he's going to be an expensive FA.

Arthur Jones could have a Henry Melton payday if he has as great a year as I expect.

John Simon is a beast. He looks to have it all. Not a coverage guy, but a more athletic jarret Johnson. Who can PASS RUSH.the depth we have on defense is amazing.

The more I see of Simon the more I like him. His relentlessness will be contagious.

Some tough decisions will be made with DL and LB. positions.

Think of the OLBs:

Suggs

Dumerville

Upshaw

McPhee

Simon

McClellan played there

Adrian Hamilton.

Like how does Adrian Hamilton not make this roster?!  I don't even know what we're going to do with OLBs

I don't see Adrian Hamilton making this team.

We're way too crowded at the spot. He would make a fine pass rusher for someone else who needed a pass rushing specialist though.

There's no room for him on the team, I'm guessing the FO is shopping him.  Suggs, Doom, Upshaw, and Simon look to be one of the best OLB rotations in the league.  The jury is still out on McPhee's position change, but I have high hopes for him.

I think we might try to sneak him back on the PS for one more year as a backup in case one of our top 5 OLBs (Suggs, Doom, Upshaw, Simon, McPhee) get hurt.

I'm not sure he makes it there.  He's looked really good as a situational pass rusher.  I doubt a team would let something like that get away.

That's way I said they would try lol I am hopeful we could do, but I agree I doubt the other 31 teams haven't been pay attention enough to see what he can do. Some 3-4 team without a lot of passrush will grab him if we try and give him a shot.

Though what if we count McPhee as a DE/OLB guy and his roster spot counts against our D-Line group then we could keep 5 OLBs (Suggs, Doom, Upshaw, Simon, Hamilton) because I think Simon and Hamilton are mainly going to make their early season impact on Special Teams.

I don't even know if we can get down to 6 DL.  Ngata, Jones, Canty, Williams, and Spears are all locks.  Cody has played very well so far, and Tyson is the wildcard.  He may go, but he played very well and I think they keep him around.

I think it also depends on our ILB group as well, off the top of my head:

DL: Ngata, Jones, Canty, Spears, Williams, Cody, Tyson

OLB: Suggs, Doom, Upshaw, Simon, Hamilton (Put McPhee in one of these groups)

ILB: Smith, Brown, Bynes, McClellan, Bryan Hall, Nigel Carr

If my memory serves I think we kept 7 D-Linemen last year didn't we? So if McPhee was in the OLB group that would be 7 DL, 6 OLB, and 6 ILB. Perhaps we keep 4 ILB and put Carr and Hall of PS?

This guy has fan favorite written all over him. I love his hustle. I don't see the JJ comparison because he isn't a monster at setting the edge like JJ was and should be a better pass rusher then him. He reminds me more of Kruger in the way he has great energy and hustle to the QB.

He's a rookie and might have a more developed pass rush move than Kruger had in four years.  That spin move is pretty nice.

yeah I agree I love seeing that spin move. With his intensity and attitude im sure he will develop adequate edge setting skills. He definitely plays like a Raven it will be exciting to see him progress. Even though IDK if he will dress a lot of games this year.

Wow now everyone seems to be with my guy.  I told you he could play.

Nobody doubted you, just saying. No need to act like you're some kind of genius scout...

Also, Simon looked really good at setting the edge yesterday. He blew up Jordan Gross bad last night. It was awesome.

That play was extremely impressive. Blew that play up right off the snap.

He took one of the best LTs in the game into the backfield and blew up the play. Great play.

But I am a genius scout :P JK(just look at what Streeter has done)

Simon had a hell of a game yesterday. JJ 2.0?

Or is that Upshaw? I'm confused :gaah:

This is a good problem to have ;)
