Who Has The Best Chance Of Winning D.P.O.Y. This Upcoming Season?

19 posts in this topic

I was reading a post on the net about our defense being an upgrade compared to last years. As always they posted who retired, got cut, or left for free agency. Then they made a list of the players we picked up in the off season and the starters we still have on D from the Super Bowl wining team.

On paper we are stacked!!! Who do you guys think has the best chance at winning D.P.O.Y. this year for the Ravens?

I'm going with Ngata. He's just a beast and when he's healthy he's one of the best in the NFL period

For our ravens I'll vote Michael Huff, teams have to throw a lot of down field passes against us to spread us out, and if he can play that deep zone well he will have a lot of chances at getting interceptions. Reed could have had 10 last year if he still had his wheels

ravens wont have a DPOY unless it is dumervil, or unless ngata finally gets over his nagging injuries, but if the plan of moving ngata to a pure NT position actually happens and lasts throughout the season, then i dont see ngata racking up the stats to win DPOY even at full health(with the popularity contest that the MVP awards are, stats are more important than actual impact, smh @ the associated press)

but i will say this, if brandon williams can be a legit NT as a rookie, and give ngata chances to stay fresh and rotate to other positions(possibly in front of doom or sizzle to eat blocks) then i could see one of our OLB's being in the running for DPOY. crazy possibility could be jimmy smith, if he can stay healthy, and if that lightswitch finally clicks in his head and he learns how to consistently cover, he could be a breakout candidate and could make a case for DPOY.

i am all but guaranteeing either elam or art brown wins DROY. and we will have a lot of breakout players on defense. i truly 100% believe we will havethe #1 defense this year, and suggs will be back, ngata will be back, upshaw will break out and show ability to dominate RT's and RG's with pure brute force and put up 6+ sacks, mcphee will do the same as a situational guy, john simon will be a pleasant surprise, and doom will be in the running for DPOY. michael huff will be very solid, he'll have decent int. numbers, but not flashy, he will keep his area covered well and wont give up big plays. rolando mcclain, if he gets a chance, and plays a whole season, he will have us begging ozzie to resign him next year lol. i am severely worried about webb and jameel, and question their ability to return to form, i am also worried that ngata may never be his full self again, but with a deeper line, and the ability to rotate, he should be better than ever. i feel that we will be disappointed by a few players though, idk who, but i can see a player who we all had high hopes for, getting a chance this year, and disappointing

Out of the Ravens I'll say Doom. Had what 17 sacks or something crazy like that his last time as a 3-4 OLB. Change of scenery, chip on his shoulder, back in the right defensive scheme, playing next to All-Pro's like Suggs, Ngata, Canty.. The writings on the wall for him to have a big year. We have a nasty front 7 and I think Doom will have the better statistical year between him and Sizzle. I  see Doom getting 10+ sacks this year, Sizzle has a good shot at that too.. The defense looks sick. I think Webb also has a big year and re-established himself as the top 5 cb he was before the injury.

Last Five DPOY:

2012: J.J. Watt - 81 tackles - 20.5 sacks - 4 FF - 16 PD

2011: Terrell Suggs - 70 tackles - 14 sacks - 7 FF - 2 INT - 6 PD

2010: Troy Polamalu - 63 tackles - 1 sack - 1 FF -  7 INT - 11 PD

2009: Charles Woodson - 66 tackles - 2 sacks - 4 FF - 9 INT - 18 PD

2008: James Harrison - 101 tackles - 16 sacks - 7 FF - 1 INT - 3 PD

What I can tell you is that the DPOY seems to be very well-round players that dominate in every phase of the game.

Possible Ravens DPOY:

Terrell Suggs - He has done it before, so he can do it again.

Elvis Dumervil - His best year that was also in the 3-4 formation helped him produce 49 tackles - 17 sacks - 4 FF. If he can improve on these numbers, then he has a high chance to win the DPOY especially with Ngata and Suggs facing double teams.

Michael Huff - He produced an All-Pro season in 2010 with 94 tackles - 4 sacks - 3 FF - 3 INT - 7 PD, so if he improves on those numbers, then he has a good shot.

Lardarius Webb - He's coming from an ACL, but after what AP pulled off, Webb can be expected to do the same. He is our best slot defender who can blitz and play against the run. That type of well-roundness could help him like Charles Woodson.

Courtney Upshaw - A Dark Horse depends on how he is used. He could be used like Adalius Thomas was a joker LB that moved all over the field. Thomas' best season produced 83 tackles - 11 sacks - 1 INT - 7 PD.

Haloti Ngata - I like Ngata, but I feel the lack of stats from the NT really drops his chance. NT is not a glamorous position, but I feel the success of our OLBs is probably due to Ngata's ability to eat double teams and free our LBs to make the play.

Last Five DROY:

2012: Luke Kuechly - 164 tackles - 1 sack - 3 FR - 2 INT - 8 PD

2011: Von Miller - 64 tackles - 11.5 sacks - 2 FF - 4 PD

2010: Ndamukong Suh - 66 tackles - 10 sacks - 1 FF - 1 INT - 3 PD

2009: Brian Cushing - 134 tackles - 5 sacks - 2 FF - 4 INT - 10 PD - (PED Postive Test/Suspension)

2008: Jerod Mayo - 128 tackles - 1 FF - 1 FR - 4 PD

Possible Ravens DROY:

Matt Elam - His best college stats were 76 tackles (11 TFL) - 2 sacks - 1 FF - 4 INT - 9 PD

Arthur Brown - His best college stats were 100 tackles (7 TFL) - 1 sack - 2 INT - 6 PD

I feel our rookies have a shot for DROY since they're both very productive players in college and well-rounded too.

Kuechly. Watt. Dumervil. JPP.

No particular order. I could definitely see Watt winning again. If Dumervil really excels in the 3-4 I think he has a chance. Our secondary is really improved from last year IMO. The pass defense could be among the top 5 or so. ... Kuechly has a DT infront of him now, he was a beast last season. JPP had a disappointing season last year, he's way more capable of the 6.5 sacks he put up, I expect a bounce back year. I don't know how Miller does without Doom, Aldon Smith is a possibility as well, Revis too if he has a bounce back year similar to AP.

Around the league, Brian Cushing gets to play behind JJ Watt (Badger pride baby...On Wisconsin!) and that makes his job easier.

If Geno Atkins catches fire in week 1, that could continue throughout the season, but I don't think they have enough studs on the team for him to be as dominant and as much of a gamewrecker as possible.

Love Jon Beason to death. That defense upgraded quite nicely. With Luke K in the mix, and now Star L. joining the team, one of those guys could light it up quite nicely.

Aldon Smith is knocking on the door screaming "Let me in Now" like Nelly

Suggs, Ngata, Doom or Webb, if he can return healthy. Everyone's job on defense has gotten easier with the pieces Ozzie added, but I think those are the people with the best chances of winning it.

I would say Webb, but coming off his ACL, I doubt he is playing up to his 2011 Pro Bowl level.

I like Dumervil as our best candidate. With Suggs commanding double teams, Dumervil could be a monster on the other side. Or maybe someone like Ngata goes wild, since the opposing offensive lines are worried about Suggs and Dumervil. Lots of options.

I was gonna say they tend to come from the AFC North...

I have to go with Ngata for us. With two elite OLBs and some nice additions everywhere else on D Ngata shouldn't get so much wear or attention this year.

No possible way to predict it if you ask me.  Who thought it would be J.J. Watt before the season started last year?  I sure didn't think so.
