Our Future Kicker

27 posts in this topic

yes another USC prospect! David Buehler. Buehler??? Buehler???

he is cut from the Sebastian Janikowski mold at 6'2 225. A big kicker with a very strong leg, and a good athlete to boot (4.4 speed, not bad for a kicker!). In college and high school he's played kicker, linebacker, running back, safety, and was a gunner for USC on the special teams coverage units. We really could've used him to chase down Quintin Demps and preserved that shutout. oh well!!!! he's a pretty accurate kicker but right now he is a better kickoff kicker than he is a FG kicker. He is known for consistently kicking through the endzone.

this season:
7/8 on field goals, and 51/52 on extra points. On his 8 FG-attempts, he was 3/3 from 20-29 yards, 2/3 from 30-39 yards, and 2-2 from 40-49 yards. He's also averaging 67.5 yards per kickoff with 39 touchbacks, #1 in the nation, thats almost 4 touchbacks a game! imagine having to drive 80 yards on our defense everytime. I wouldn't want to either!

ok so currently we have Stover and the Hauschka kid on the roster. Stover is getting old as you all know and could be gone really soon. Hauschka has a pretty strong leg with some serious range on his FG kicks as hes already hit a 54 yarder so he might be our future kicker. It would save ourselves a draft pick from selecting a kicker, but in case we decide to go another direction, Buehler is a name to be considered. But I guess it doesn't matter anyways cause the Lions are going to take him with one of their first rounds picks!

Drafting Buehler would be awesome. I didn't know he could run a 4.4, that's just insane. I'd run a couple trick plays with him.

Yeah if we got him it would be awesome, just giving Roseberg/Cameron another athlete to mess around with.

most teams don't draft kickers unless:

a. they're absolutely outstanding

or

b. they have no kickers left on their roster that are worth a crap

most kickers come out as UDFAs. besides, there are always vet kickers out there if you're in need. i doubt we draft a kicker unless he's a monster, and it's round 6-7

Maybe if he is in a later round, I think we should focus on other things we need right now though. If Haushka can get accuracy to go with that much strength in his leg he will be a great kicker and lead to our offense putting more points up on the bored.

Remember Harbaugh has a strong special teams background. Now thats not to say that we do draft a kicker as i would much rather sign Gano as a UDFA, however we did draft Sam Koch a few years back so drafting a K is not that doubtful.

yeah but Sam Koch is like....... a monster at punting, 74 yard long... all kinds of great punts in turn of field posistion for our opponent. I definitely think a 5th or 6th rounder is worth a Kicker, if thats what we decide we need. Unlike other posistions, if youre selected in the 5th round as a kicker, you don't need to sit a year and learn... you can go right in. Kickers can make or break games, so if we feel there is a need to draft a kicker, I dont have a problem with it at all

Buehler was awful in the last regular season game, against UCLA. missed all 3 of his kicks from about 40 yards. maybe it's a ploy to intentionally drop his stock so we could pick him up in the later rounds :P

I don't like the idea of taking a Kicker in the draft as that could hurt us by not adding depth at another key position. But this kicker sounds like the real deal and if he is there in the 4th or later rounds I say draft him, but the first 3 rounds need to be used to get a CB, WR and possibly a defensive lineman to replace Kelly Gregg(I believe Gregg will retire after this season). I believe Matt Stover will retire and if indeed Stover does Retire I say we draft this kicker to be our new kicker for years to come and release Hauschka.

4th round? More like 6th round, there is still plenty of talent to be picked up in the fourth round so it's way too costly to pick up a Kicker then. If we could get him in the 6th or late 5th it would probably be worth the risk, let's just see how he runs at the combine <_< every prospect's 40 time seems to get a little inflated by the media/fans prior.

Let's be realistic....the first thing we need to address is WR/DB, after that, I say we stock D-Line then O-Line, Stover will stay next year and haushka(sp?) can boot em over 50, if we would ever try them.

Remember Indy, we need another shutdown corner.

Yeah no way a 41 year old kicker retires, he can barely kick from 40 yards and now we have to keep a second kicker on the roster just for kickoffs and long field goals. If anything Stover is one of the clear candidates on our roster for retirement and it becomes more apparent with Haushka stealing kick offs and long FG's that he will retire or be replaced.

I wasn't saying let's just forget about our kicker situation all together I'm just saying a lot of the time these kickers aren't as good as they are hyped up to be. You want your kicker to be kicking FG's and XP's before you want him running any trick plays.

^ well quote me if you must but Matt Stover will be a raven next year
If you noticed on Saturday night Stover was getting them to the 4-5 yard line and Hauskca has only 2 Touchbacks all season and gets them around the same place, i think he needs to go as stover is still trusty enough on kickoffs, so he will be a raven next year.

Ok since we are closer to the Franchise tag deadline and yes most likely Sizzle will get Tagged. We haven't heard anything about a retirement from Stover, so I guess that it is safe to say that Stover will return for another year and that the Ravens will use two Kickers in 2009? (Stover for short FGs and Haushka for longer kicks; i.e FGs that Stover in unable to make)

I was thinking the same thing! i watched this kid play a couple of times this year and he has an absolute rocket for a leg, and stover is getting older and i dont know if haushka can handle the full time kicking

Not yet. I don't think he is ready to handle the full time kicking. Maybe another year with Stover will help him be ready for a full time kicker role.

I agree

Seriously, I'd much rather get the most accurate kicker, who has the leg and can also punt with amazing accuracy (That bowl game was rediculous, five punts inside the five) then a kicker with some shopped forty speed.

David Beuhler put up 25 reps of 225 pounds. To put that in perspective, that bettered 27 offensive linemen, including Michael Oher and Eugene Monroe. This guy would be a awesome addition in the later rounds in my opinion. He also had 4.6ish speed.
