Trent Steelman (QB from Army)

12 posts in this topic

When I saw this name pop up on the list of players we signed I was extremely confused. I lived in suburban NY most of my life, (30 mins from West Point to be exact), so I used to go to 3-4 Army games per year and he was one of my favorite players. This guy is a pretty good wing-bone option QB, but strictly that as he doesn't have much of an arm. Any ideas as to what we will do with him, or why we signed him?

I've seen reports that he'll possibly work at QB, slot WR, and maybe even S.

Yeah, I heard he's probably going to be a WR with a back-up position of S.

Trent was a good runner at Army. His passes were accurate - just a bit slow traveling. He couldn't throw into coverage and he didn't chuck the ball 60 yds but he could hit the open guy reliably with the medium pass. His biggest issue was fumbling. The option creates more fumbles with the mesh but Trent could fumble umtouched just running the ball himself. But he did set Army rushing TD record (about 45) and won some games himself with skillful runs to the end zone. He played WR in the East/West Shrine game and scored the Easts only TD on a 7 yd run. He was impressive in practices. He also long snapped for the East. Articles I've read say the Ravens also like him at WR and saftey - which I would have no doubt he could play  reliabley on run plays. Wouldn't match him up vs Percy Harvin. He's tough like a terrier and has been called a "swiss army knife" with regard to verstaility.

Doesn't he have to serve a couple of years active duty first?

I remember hearing that in the last few years they passed a policy in which they can serve after playing a certain amount of years.

I could be wrong so I'll look into it.

He might be a PS candidate for us to use as a practice option read QB for the defense like how we used Dennis Dixon last year.
