Rookie jersey numbers?

148 posts in this topic

I don't want Elam wearing 31. That just screams Pollard. I just think Elam needs to be in a 20's jersey.

I was thinking that maybe Elam could be 32? Connects him to 22 that he wore at college.

Though now that I think about it does Idedigbo wear 32? Nevermind lol back to square one.

What about 26 or 28?

I have a very strong opinion on retiring numbers... I don't think any number should be retired unless the player passes away like Sean Taylor. If you retired every great players Jersey, teams would not have any numbers left. People may disagree, but that is just my 2 cents.

Unless their name is Ray Lewis

I think 28 would be nice, gives him a chance to create his own legacy, i personally don't like him taking 31. I know Pollard's gone but it's a bit to soon and he plays the same position. But hey it's his choice.

Though it does have a similar look to 22, 22 28, just saying.

Z should have kept #40 and should have been a SS.

This right here pisses me off, to be perfectly honest. Why the Hell is Jimmy Smith, a guy we drafted, a bad guy because he doesn't change his number? That's just ridiculous.

You'll see I re-phrased myself in my second post here.

I just want to premise this statement by saying I don't care how many negatives you give me!  I'd love to see Elam wear number 20.  It will take the sting out of losing Ed.

id rather see elam at 22. one thing i hate about college is NOT sticking to numbering by position, so when a player has a legitimate number for their position, i like to see them keep that number in the nfl. jimmy should cough that number up it would be awful for him not to, its not like hes exactly been a savior for us, he could turn out good, but at least start 3/4 of a season before you start being a egomaniac. someone who was drafted to be a #1 corner, and was injured rookie year, injured sophomore year, and lost a starting job to 3 different corners.. cmon man

Jimmy did make a few plays in the SuperBowl. I think you are kind of hard him when it comes to the injuries, that kinda just happens, I'll admit he has been beaten pretty badly on double moves the last 2 years, but he can and will be solid going forward in the future, I'm confident of this because he's shown glimpses of his talent.
I do not think Jimmy should give up his #22, as it stands he is Superbowl winning former first round pick with seniority on his side.

i understand where youre coming from, and yeah he definitely made some great plays, but hes shown to be wildly inconsistent, and while i think he does have a bright future, he has been widely viewed as a bust, i never viewed him as a bust, but many have. but as i said in another post, if he wore 22 in college, its understandable, but elam has worn 22 for the majority of his football career, and for very meaningful reasons, jimmy wore a number that isnt suitable for a db in college, and has only had 22 for 2 years, and it would just be the right thing for him to do to sell elam the number. were all entitled to our opinions though, thatsjust mine.

EDIT: jimmy also lost a starting job to cary williams, and corey graham, and if im not mistaken he was sat in favor of chykie brown at one point also, not sure which one was due to injury, but he lost his starting job to many players that nobody thought was even supposed to be able to compete with jimmy.

Lol. I wouldn't mind at all. Ed left the Ravens therefore his number should not be sacred like Ray and Ogden's. Don't get me wrong I understand why he left and don't mind it at all I just think his number should be treated like the HOF'ers that stayed career Ravens. Just my opinion.

Here are my guesses, just for the fun of it.

Matt Elam - 31

Already established

Arthur Brown - 59

The only LB number available.  I don't see him buying one off of someone.

Brandon Williams - 68

66 is taken by Gino, so I'm just giving him another number in the 60s that seems to suit him.

John Simon - 98

The only DL/OLB number left.  It seems like a good fit.

Kyle Juszczyk - 40

44 is taken by Leach and he wore 40 at the senior bowl.  I think he'll take the same number here.

Ricky Wagner - 71

Pure guess here.  He seems like a guy that likes a number in the 70s.

Kapron Lewis-Moore - 69

This is just a number that he'll wear for now, until he sees the field in 2014.  Another pure guess.

Ryan Jensen - 63

Another guess.  No logic involved.

Aaron Mellette - 13

He wore 3 in college.  Add a 1 in front a voila!

Marc Anthony - 39

He has the choice of 36 or 39, really.  Most people would pick 36 but I'll guess 39 because I do what I want.

Chris Johnson is 39 so 36

I don't see why not, #52 is sacred, #20 is just a number.

I don't want to see Elam given 20, just because it'll put the pressure on him to be Ed Reed. He'll have that constant reminder that he's taking over from one of the best players to ever play for the Ravens. If we do hand 20 on, I think we should wait a few years first. Let our next generation of players make their own legacies first.

Yeah, I think I was a bit hard on Jimmy in my first post too. I stand by wanting to see Elam get 22, but I do think it's Jimmy's call - especially if he can stay healthy and become the dominant corner we hoped he'd be.

This could just be my being used to watching other sports, but if I had a "Smith 22" I wouldn't mind at all if he changed. I think mgridda had an excellent point about them looking like throwbacks and a badge of loyalty. Back when I was like 6 my local team had a rugby player named Tana Umaga who wore the 14 (right winger), but eventually got moved to centre (13). If I'd been able to buy a jersey while he had the 14, I'd be treating it like gold dust today because I see it as a mark of supporting the player even before he reached his prime.

26 is Emanuel Cook if he makes the team. 28 is Damien Berry, again, if he makes the team.

I saw someone wearing a #8 BOLLER jersey. Wow that's some loyalty lol.

Elam can have 22 when Jimmy Smith isn't re-signed in a few years.

Right on.

I believe Jimmy Smith could become known as a bust after this year if he cannot overcome the injury-issue and step up and play like a first-round draft choice. Three years to develop is ample time for an NFL cornerback.

My wife has one.

My wife has a Smith 22 jersey.

What about it?

I dunno, maybe a -1.  You seem cool and all.  Plus I have no clue where Glen Arm is so for me to "come at you" would require a GPS and things would just get weird after that.

I just checked Elam's wikipedia page. Has him listed as #32. Any confirmation that this is true?

Drama a brew'n.

Yup he was on twitter telling someone he tried to get 22 but dude ain't trying to sell it and he says he has to earn some stripes with our team first and says its a matter of time before he's back in it. I guess he's saying Jimmy will respect his production one day and fork over his number. lol I don't see it happening.

My first crack at rookie jersey numbers:

Matt Elam - #26 (Doesn't have many choices, I believe he will end up with this number and try to work towards #22 one day)

Arthur Brown - #54 (I am guessing Hamilton won't be on the team and Brown will end up in #54 - Wore #4 in college, so just throw a linebacker #5 in front of it)

Brandon Williams - #98 (Only 90s # open but he could also go with something like #77 or even #67)

John Simon - #59 (Only 50s # left after Brown gets 54 when it comes open, but he could end up in #98 if BW doesn't go with it)

Kyle Juszczyk - #40 (Leach has 44 and Kyle wore 40 at the SB, so it makes sense)

Ricky Wagner - #68 (Same # he wore in college)

Kapron Lewis-Moore - #69 (No numbers in the 90s left and it's the closest to the #89 he will get)

Ryan Jensen - #67 (Closest he is coming to his #66 with Gino in it and BW first in line if Gino is willing to change)

Aaron Melette - #13 (He can't get his #3, but he can get the next best thing, 13 which is available)

Marc Anthony - #36 (Nothing is available, so I'm just completely guessing here)

Sean Taylor changed from 21 to 36 just fine.

It was the other way around and I think 31 looks a lot better than 22.
