Rookie jersey numbers?

148 posts in this topic

You can't just change a former 1st round pick's number so easily. It just doesn't happen like that. People actually buy those jerseys.

Sean Taylor changed from 21 to 36 just fine.

People who bought the old number are probably prouder to wear it. It's like throw back, or supporting a player from the start. I don't see what the issue is.

It's up to Smith. If he wants to sell it, he will. If not, he won't. He owes no allegiance to the people who buy his jersey.

That's my thinking really. I would like to see him give it up, because it's a sad story Elam has and it would be cool to see him get his number. That said, if I'm Jimmy I probably don't give the number up though, so I can't throw too many stones.

At least we're not the Jets though. Just imagine the circus that incident would create. It'd be all over ESPN for months.

I have a very strong opinion on retiring numbers... I don't think any number should be retired unless the player passes away like Sean Taylor. If you retired every great players Jersey, teams would not have any numbers left. People may disagree, but that is just my 2 cents.

Jimmy was a first round pick, which means people have his jersey.... Which means a number change would upset the people who have his old number.

There aren't that many great players on even the oldest of teams.

Also, Sean Taylor's number isn't even officially OR UNOFFICIALLY retired. I mean, no one has worn 21 in Washington out of respect...but still. He hasn't done enough. The only offically retired number for Washington is that of Sammy Baugh.

it's not easy to get a number retired. IMO, only Ogden and Lewis deserve it thus far.

Wonder if Brown going to stick with "Brown Jr." on his Jersey?  Some people are really attached to their Junior status.

I've only seen two Jimmy Smith jerseys in my life. One was in a Shenk and Tittle store right after the draft, and the second was at a tailgate lot before a game. I'm pretty sure the second was custom made.

There are clearly so many of them.

I know I will get negged.. But I would retire #52 and #75... I would be open to giving out #20 just for the fact that Ray and Ogden were Ravens for life. Ed Reed chose money over his legacy in Baltimore. There will be #20 jerseys with "REED" on the back with a Texan logo on it this season.. So I wouldn't retire it IMHO.

I actually agree with you

Oh my gosh people, if they sell it at the NFL shop.com, and it's not a custom made jersey, that means people can buy HIS specific jersey. That means although some of you may not see them, people still buy them. Here is the link.

See where it says officially liscensed? It's hard for players like that to just change their number. You guys know how much money it costs a player to change their number and buy out the licenses?

Here are my guesses, just for the fun of it.

Matt Elam - 31

Already established

Arthur Brown - 59

The only LB number available.  I don't see him buying one off of someone.

Brandon Williams - 68

66 is taken by Gino, so I'm just giving him another number in the 60s that seems to suit him.

John Simon - 98

The only DL/OLB number left.  It seems like a good fit.

Kyle Juszczyk - 40

44 is taken by Leach and he wore 40 at the senior bowl.  I think he'll take the same number here.

Ricky Wagner - 71

Pure guess here.  He seems like a guy that likes a number in the 70s.

Kapron Lewis-Moore - 69

This is just a number that he'll wear for now, until he sees the field in 2014.  Another pure guess.

Ryan Jensen - 63

Another guess.  No logic involved.

Aaron Mellette - 13

He wore 3 in college.  Add a 1 in front a voila!

Marc Anthony - 39

He has the choice of 36 or 39, really.  Most people would pick 36 but I'll guess 39 because I do what I want.

Isn't Chris Johnson still with us?  He wore 39 last year.

One facebook like for his jersey, it must be from his mom when she bought one of the 3 that were made.

You're totally missing the point. It has nothing to do with how many are sold. The fees to buy the liscense from Nike to make a number change are ridiculous. It was going to cost Adrian Peterson a Million dollars to switch from 28 to 23. I don't know why I'm arguing about a jersey number lol but you have to understand that if a jersey is officially liscensed by Nike, it is going to cost a lot of money to change it.

I've got to agree with you, two perfect numbers to be retired, and for good reasons.

That and everyone in Baltimore has a #52 jersey that says "Lewis" on the back.. it wouldn't look right with another name. :D

That depends on how many unsold jerseys there were. Peterson's jersey sold like hotcakes so Nike printed a ton of them. Jimmy's sold like... not hotcakes.

Apples and oranges, it cost Adrian Peterson a million because thats probably how many he sells. Nike would probably do an inventory on the two remaining Jimmy Smiths jerseys only to find out they were sent to a sweat shop to black out the windows.

Lol wow no Love for Jimmy Huh? A sweat shop is a little harsh lol, I mean the guy isn't a scrub? He's our starting Corner. I saw Webb Jerseys before he was an elite corner. I'm not trying to Argue, it's just you don't see first round picks from 2 years Ago trade their number with a rookie. That's all.

I'm just joking around man. Jimmy doesn't have to give up his number to Elam, I just hope he chooses to.

I don't want Elam wearing 31. That just screams Pollard. I just think Elam needs to be in a 20's jersey.

Anyways, Numbers shouldn't be a big deal until the rosters start downsizing to 53.

If Jimmy Smith agrees to sell #22, then good for him.

Or maybe they could compete against each other for that number.

I personally like Arthur Brown to take #59 and make his own legacy.

Brandon Williams should get #95 or #98, so we can build the Adams-Goose wall of the early 2000.

John Simon might get something in the 90s.

Kyle Juszczyk - something in the 40s

Ricky Wagner - #64, #62, #61, which are worn by tough guys that stay long in the league and get no enough recognition.

He's part of the Wisconsin OL Factory, and we got one to bolster our OL.

So someone go ahead and tell me why Matt Elam, a guy who was just drafted, deserves to have #22 over Jimmy Smith, a player we drafted three years ago in the 1st round? Sure, go ahead and say that he has "so many jerseys". That's fine--make your jokes. You can bring up the thing about #22 being significant to Elam. That's fair. But you know what? I really don't care. I don't think it's that big of a deal, to be honest. I just think it's a tad disrespectful to just assume that Smith should surrender his rights to that number because of Elam's situation.

Let me also add a caveat here: I'm not saying Elam is saying that. I don't know & can't say whether Elam is demanding the number. That's absurd. I am going by what people here, in this thread, have suggested.

Actually he made two big plays on that drive, if you remember the fourth down. :D

I do think Matt Elam should get the 22 though. I can see the case for Jimmy Smith's seniority, but you don't call him by "22" or anything like you did with 52 or 20. I think he only comes off as the bad guy by not switching.

This right here pisses me off, to be perfectly honest. Why the Hell is Jimmy Smith, a guy we drafted, a bad guy because he doesn't change his number? That's just ridiculous.
