Rookie jersey numbers?

148 posts in this topic

Here are my guesses, just for the fun of it.

Matt Elam - 31

Already established

Arthur Brown - 59

The only LB number available.  I don't see him buying one off of someone.

Brandon Williams - 68

66 is taken by Gino, so I'm just giving him another number in the 60s that seems to suit him.

John Simon - 98

The only DL/OLB number left.  It seems like a good fit.

Kyle Juszczyk - 40

44 is taken by Leach and he wore 40 at the senior bowl.  I think he'll take the same number here.

Ricky Wagner - 71

Pure guess here.  He seems like a guy that likes a number in the 70s.

Kapron Lewis-Moore - 69

This is just a number that he'll wear for now, until he sees the field in 2014.  Another pure guess.

Ryan Jensen - 63

Another guess.  No logic involved.

Aaron Mellette - 13

He wore 3 in college.  Add a 1 in front a voila!

Marc Anthony - 39

He has the choice of 36 or 39, really.  Most people would pick 36 but I'll guess 39 because I do what I want.

Wait till we are done with cuts. I want to get an Elam jersey but i'll wait in case he falls in love with another number besides 31.

Haha, those make sense. I really want him to get #56, though, because he was the 56th pick of the Draft. Seems really fitting.

What is the deal with 57? Brigance is a great guy and all, but he only played one year with the team as a BACKUP. You can't retire too many people. Bart Scott had it for seven years, and so I don't see why it's still being held back.

Most likely symbolic.

Most likely symbolic.

But when you start retiring numbers like that it just gets out of hand. I understand not wanting to give one of the rookies 52 or 20 right away, you can even put O.J. on the Ring if you want, but you can't retire the number of everybody who has had a positive personal impression on you.

I know I will get negged.. But I would retire #52 and #75... I would be open to giving out #20 just for the fact that Ray and Ogden were Ravens for life. Ed Reed chose money over his legacy in Baltimore. There will be #20 jerseys with "REED" on the back with a Texan logo on it this season.. So I wouldn't retire it IMHO.

Anyways, so apparently Matt Elam tried to buy Jimmy Smith's #22 and Jimmy didn't budge. And Elam seems very confident he will get it sooner or later.

Elam wears #22 for his 13 year old sister who was murdered when he was a boy of 8.

22 was her favourite number, and the number she wore for track and softball.

Meanwhile, Jimmy Smith wore #3 in college at Colorado. I think a sell is highly likely. I'd rather see Elam in #31, but I'm sure the #22 means a lot more to him than what I'd rather.

Hm.. I didn't know that. That's heartbreaking. Any chance Chykie changes his numer, Jimmy moving to #23 and Elam taking #22?

id rather see elam at 22. one thing i hate about college is NOT sticking to numbering by position, so when a player has a legitimate number for their position, i like to see them keep that number in the nfl. jimmy should cough that number up it would be awful for him not to, its not like hes exactly been a savior for us, he could turn out good, but at least start 3/4 of a season before you start being a egomaniac. someone who was drafted to be a #1 corner, and was injured rookie year, injured sophomore year, and lost a starting job to 3 different corners.. cmon man

I wouldn't be so hard on Jimmy. He still has seniority.

But yeah, Elam would probably have to get Chykie off 23, then Jimmy off of 22

Idk man.. I didn't neg you but Jimmy did save our super bowl by popping Crabtree 3rd down on their final drive. If it wasn't for that, I think Gore would've punched it in from 3 yards out.

Uhhhhhhhh...

Jimmy Smith is a former drafted 1st round pick we drafted! What about the people who got his jersey? I'm sorry but I don't care what story Elam has for wanting the number. No way should Jimmy give up his number. Period.

Actually he made two big plays on that drive, if you remember the fourth down. :D

I do think Matt Elam should get the 22 though. I can see the case for Jimmy Smith's seniority, but you don't call him by "22" or anything like you did with 52 or 20. I think he only comes off as the bad guy by not switching.

But why should Elam be entitled?  What if Jimmy has become very attached to the number 22?  He doesn't come off as the bad guy at all.

How about the fans who bought the jersey of a first round pick

I never knew that, certainly an interesting subplot to Elam.  I know JSmith took #22 because Webb had #21 and the two wanted to re-created the shake and bake from Rolle and McAlister.  So its not like JSmith took #22 for no apparent reason at all.

maybe im crazy but i spoke about this earlier, when youre in college, use a number that fits your position, when players do idiotic stuff like play as #3 as a db, stuff like this happens, now if he was #22 in college, id say theres no way he should give it up, but he had a qb/kicker/punters number in college, while matt elam has played db, with a db appropriate number for years, and he should be able to stick with it, because jimmy doesnt have a number that has stuck with him for the majority of his football life.

and by the way, idk if its even up to the players in college or not, but when people dont play with a position appropriate number, its a real pet peeve of mine. i played MLB in high school and my second year they tried to make me number 14 and i demanded they give me a 40's or 50's number or i wouldnt play.. i got 56 :D

You can't just change a former 1st round pick's number so easily. It just doesn't happen like that. People actually buy those jerseys.
