Terrell Suggs a cap casualty next year?

91 posts in this topic

Okay so this might be a controversial view but with the amount of defensive players we have I think that Suggs is in danger of being released next year if he doesn't return to the level we all know he can play at, his cap hit is about $12.5 million next year and we would have another draft to replace him. If he performs like he can this year then I can't see this happening but if he can't bounce back from his injury and underperforms this year I think it's something we will look at, any thoughts?

Ngata's a potential cap casualty next year as well.

It sucks but I feel like atleast one of them won't be with us in 2015.

Ngata isn't.  He has a $16M cap hit, but $15M in dead money if we cut him.  For $1M, we keep him.

Yeah, same as ray rice.  We just have to eat those contracts if we cut him.

Suggs and Ngata are still top of their game.

They will not be possible cap casualty until their final year of their contract.

Suggs will be motivated and he was one year remove from a Defensive Player of the Year season.

I assume that Ozzie will not extend Suggs after his contract is over due to that the front office will not invest on expensive aging players. That Boldin move showed how the front office operates, so any players that are over 30, have any expensive cap, haven't lived up to their contract, and won't take a paycut, then they will be targeted as cap casualty. It sucks, but that's the way of the cap. We have to save our money for our young and upcoming players, instead of holding onto the past.

John Simon, Brandon Williams, and Kapron Lewis-Moore will provide a lot of depth and stablity for the future.

This is crazy talk. Suggs will be 100% when camp rolls around. So will Ngata. Those two guys at 100% are two of the best defensive players in the league. Only way Suggs gets cut is if he gets hurt again, and even, that's not a guarantee

What this guy said. With the new guys on defense if Ngata and Suggs play decline the team should probably get rid of them anyway.

What?

No.

He's the best player on our defense, he was just injured last year. This is ridiculously irrational.

Lol

I don't think Suggs goes anywhere, FWIW. If anyone is gone, it's Ngata because he retires like he has said he might.

I can't see them getting rid of Signs.  If anything they work out a Ray Lewis style deal at the end of his contract that let's him retire a Raven at the end.    When healthy, Signs is a premiere pass rusher.   You just don't let them walk.

Let's just see him play like himself this year and not have to worry about this.

Btw, is there any link to current cap space in future years?

I give Suggs two years(13-14) and Ngata one.

Easy there champ!!

Ngata was battling injuries last year. He's still the best NT in the game & Suggs is still our best pass rusher. Suggs and Ngata have just been given the roles of being our defensive captains/leaders after the departures of Reed & Lewis.

I give Suggs 3-4 more years (by age 34 or 35 he'll be gone) give him some time to groom a young pass rusher (or 2) and act as a cohesive for the newer Ravens. Ngata, I'll give him 4-6 more years (from 34-36 he'll be gone). Our defensive line was AWFUL last year and he was constantly double teamed and asked to do a lot so I believe that's what led to his injuries.

I think Haloti Ngata's career ends sooner than that. I see him either retiring when his contract ends or the year before. I think he's close to being done with his career as a football player. He seems like a real family man who will put himself & his family first before this game of football. I have the highest respect for him for that.

That's a big reason why I am beyond thrilled we drafted Kapron Lewis-Moore. He's such an underrated selection but I guarantee you guys when Ngata nears the end, he will assume control of that defensive line. He will be the leader of the DL in 3 years.

He isn't going to be a cap casulty. He has 2 more years on his contract. We will let him play it out and then decide whether or not to resign him based on upshaw's progress. Realistically our olb core could be Upshaw + Dumervil in the future.

Agreed. Part of the reason we hit the d line so hard was because the draft is deep in quality in it and the fact that in 2-3 years our entire d line will basically be gone (Ngata, Canty, Spears)

Future looks bright with Jones, McPhee and Tyson, if he keeps improving. If Williams works out should be very stout. I'm hoping Ngata stays around at least 5 more years though. Interesting to see the future of the team being assembled now.

Don't forget Terence Cody. :p

Was this even a thought after his DPOY campaign? Absolutely not. After an expectedly lackluster season in 2012, of course there will be those who think Suggs is a candidate to be cut next year. But I fully expect a rebound season in 2013 for Suggs, a season in which he will squash all skepticism about his future with the Ravens.

Or should we...? lol

But who knows, maybe he can find motivation with his spot on the line up in jeopardy.

Joking aside, I would love to see Cody step up and become a great NT. This year he has all the incentives: a contract year and a viable replacement. If he doesn't sort himself out, we have no qualms cutting him of Brandon Williams pans out.
