Things That Make You Go Hmmmm....

8 posts in this topic

I was on YouTube the other day, and there was this guy who was saying that ed reed was overrated, (his name was joker777 or something like that) , and I, like any true ravens fan, wrote it off as complete hooplah (real word?)but then when I remembered that awhile ago I put in a thread that I thought that ed reed was underated, which made me think. does the joker saying reed is overated make him underated, because I know that he is not overated?

Someone please clarify, I am almightily confused

( also I'd like to know if hooplah is a real word or just something I made up)

Hmmm. if you say he's underrated, someone else says overrated, does that mean he's right where he's supposed to be

I don't think Reed can be considered underrated. He's a former Defensive Player of the Year and is universally considered the best safety in the league. The other Ravens safety, Dawan Landry, is the underrated one. He's not as fast as the other guys, but he does everything well on the field. He actually intercepted more passes than Reed last year and probably deserved Defensive Rookie of the Year, but was forgotten because of all the talent surrounding him.

Actually, Reed and Landry both nabbed 5 picks last year. Reed is always going to be considered overrated because of he plays for a great defense and really doesn't have to do as much as other safeties like Sean Taylor or Kerry Rhodes. However, the fact Reed did anything last year just shows how talented he really is. Yes, he gave some big plays but he made some huge ones too. He nabbed 5 picks, forced a fumble and recovered another. I watched every Ravens game last year and I can guarantee that Reed dropped at least 5 possible picks last year. I'm not talking about plays where he deflected the ball, I'm talking about plays where he caught the ball the ball and dropped it or the ball bounced off his chest.

Many people say Reed just sits in a zone, reads the QB's eyes, waits for the pass rush to disrupt the QB and swoops in to pick off the poorly thrown ball. However, what else does Reed have to do? QBs don't want to throw his way anymore and putting him in man-coverage would limit his impact on the game. Reed is at his best when he is the zone as he proved during the Colts game last season.

Reed may never put up stats like he did in 04. However, it's not because of ability, it's just he's playing on a much better defense and he's switched positions. During the first 4 seasons of Reed's career, he played SS and so he blitzed more and played closer to the line of scrimmage. Last season, with Dawan Landry, Reed moved back to FS, the position he played and excelled at Miami. He was given more coverage responsibilites and was almost never matched up in the box. Plus, RBs rearely ever get past the front seven so there was no way Reed could get over 70 tackles last year.

Reed is generally considered the best safety in the game so it is difficult to argue that he is under-rated. On the other hand, he really is one of the best safeties in the game, (unlike Sean Taylor) so I think any claim that he is overrated is also false. Is it possible that he is properly rated?

i think samari rolle is underrated

If he doesn't bounce back from last year I think the term would become Overrated.
