Irrelevant's pre draft off-season report card!

72 posts in this topic

Ravens fans, one of my favorite times of the year is just next week.

The NFL Draft....

So I(naturally having a lot of time on my hands to type this thing) am going to do a full in-depth report on how we are going.

Let me start off with the grades of the signings.

Chris Canty DE/DT.

6'7 athletic cat..

Canty is a jack of all trades master of none Dlinemen who can play in either scheme as an end. He is good at stopping both the run, and is a very good pass rusher. He is not great at either though. But I like this addition for many reasons.

The dude is tall. Some QB's are going to have a tough time seeing over our dline when they play against us.

The dude moves one of the best Dlinemen in the game(Ngata) to NT. Which can now stand for Night Terror!

All in all, this is a very good signing. He will be the replacement for Redding we never had.

Irrelevant Grade:B+

Marcus Spears DT
One of the better interior run defenders in the entire NFL.
Football is won in the trenches. And depth is what makes us different from a SB contender.
He is not going to be starting any time soon. But will get a lot of playing time.

For depth purposes. This grade gets a B-

Elvis Dumervil OLB
So we trade a situational pass rusher for an all pro LB? Ok, I am good with that.
Lol, this signing is what makes Ozzie, well, Ozzie!
The dude is a stud. He demands attention on a team that had another stud pass rusher in Miller. So what happens when you put him with a former DPOY and one of the premier players in the game in NGATA?

I will do the pass rushing grade later. But he alone demands a double team.

This gets the rare Irrelevant perfect score

Grade: 100% A+

Micheal Huff FS
I understand the whole Dumervil fiasco...
But to Reggie Mckenize (and you've been doing a good job).

WHY THE HELL DID YOU CUT HUFF?

I mean seriously... FS is the most important position in the secondary. He is better than at least 22 FS' in the NFL and you CUT HIM?

He's younger than Reed, and still takes away the deep ball.

Many say he cannot do crap without a shutdown CB next to him.

Well..... Now he's got one..

He's got a potential second one of Jimmy breaks out.

This signing has the potential to be a huge steal.....

He needs to get better in run support, but considering that the most important job of the FS is pass coverage... This gets an A-

Grade: A-

Rolando McClain MLB
It is impossible for me to grade this signing. He has the potential to be as good as Willis, but the floor of What Urlacher was this year.

The dude is a stud athletically. He did not have good coaches to work with in Oakland. Harbs is a disciplinarian coach. If anything, his attitude is the least of my worries.

It's his coverage that scares me.

I think the 3-4 Zone will help him a lot.... But until the season ends

Edit: Not bad move on Ozzie's part.

But Rolando blew it

Grade: F

State of the Offense.

QB: Joe Flacco
He's elite folks. I could care less about his regular season stats. When the game is on the line, he's clutch. When it's the big game, he shows up.....

We're fine at QB for the next 6 years.

I don't care about this mobile QB crap.
A pocket passer just won the SB. He beat the mobile QB.

Get over it!

RB:
Rice is an all pro
Pierce is a future star
NEXT

WR:
Torrey Smith: Breakout candidate. Is a good WR.
Jacoby Jones: Good #3. Questionable #2
Tandon Doss: Unproven
Tommy Streeter: Unproven
Deonte Tomphson: Unproven

TE's: Pitta is good
Dickson can improve.

NEED

LT:BIGGEST NEED.
LG: Osmele is eventually going to be an all pro.
C: I think Gino can hold it down.
RG: Yanda is the best in the game
RT: Oher is a good RT.

Our offense needs a WR #2 and a LT.

It looks to be a well oiled machine that will be very hard to stop. The no huddle will make this offense dynamic.

What do you do?

Shut down the pass. OR have Rice run all over you?

You're screwed either way!

I agree with alot of this but you're by far the biggest homer on here. :D
Seattle is the best team in the NFL.

I think we did one hell of an offseason to work with......

I don't see repeat(it's hard to do.... We do have huge needs).

But we are going to field a good team this year.

The only teams I think are better are

Houston
Seattle
Denver
and maybe Cinci

I will give credit where credit is due.

But we are going to be dangerous in a few years!
Well maybe not as big as a homer as me in some regards lol.....I think we're the best team until someone takes our title. All the teams you've posted haven't proved anything in the playoffs the last couple years. Seattle may have the best looking team on paper but that's not how Superbowls are won. (They do look scary though).

And what the hell do you mean in a few years? We're dangerous now, and should be for the next 5 or so years with the core of young players we have.

In a few years if Jimmy gets to his peak, and the young guns get into their primes...

We might have a dynasty on our hands.......

If we get another shutdown CB. a solid SS, and Rolando pans out...

We might be the closest we've seen to a complete team.

I'm talking about a highly rated offense and defense.

Do departures, too! Oh, heck, I'll try it out.

Paul Kruger - A+
Ravens could not afford that deal for a part time player. The money went elsewhere to players who will make a bigger impact. Seriously, Dumervil alone will make people forget about Kruger.

Cary Williams - A-
Despite his inconsistent play, Cary was pretty good during the playoffs and provided stability at the CB position. Still, it was time for him to go - he earned his pay.

Anquan Boldin - C
I hated this trade when I learned about it. Sure, we dumped most of his salary onto the 49ers but we lost a playmaker, leader, and only got a 6th rounder. Time has healed the sting a little but, dang, Q is gone...

Ed Reed - B+
It was time for Ed to go. I don't like it but his play had fallen off a cliff and he was not worth the $5M/yr that Houston gave him - the Ravens could not have matched it, either. Huff replaces him effectively at a cheaper rate.

Dannell Ellerbe - B
Don't really know how to grade this one because there's not much the Ravens could do about it. The Dolphins threw the bank at him and he accepted. Can't fault him or the Ravens, it's a TON of money.

Bryant McKinnie - TBD
Hasn't signed anywhere else, could possibly sign here. We'll see how it works out.

Bernard Pollard - C
Another departure I was not thrilled about. Cut him to only save ~$1M and, imo, he had played well. There might be more to this story than meets the eye ie Pollard's locker-room demeanor.

Kemoeatu/Ayanbadejo/Williams/Bajema - A
I'll lump these guys together because it applies for all. These guys were old and couldn't perform to their pay, albeit relatively small. As BA said after he was cut, because of the veteran pay scale, the Ravens can find a younger guy to do the same thing at a cheaper cost.

They won't stop talking about how "elite" Boldin is.......

THEY WON'T SHUT UP!

Though, we did use all that cap room freed to get Dumervil, and Huff.

I'd give our trade of Boldin a C+ at the very least, possibly even a B. The thing is, we traded him in the 11th hour as a last resort. The Ravens clearly didn't want to lose him. With that said, better to get a 6th than to cut him outright. We can use that 6th to trade up now, which looks to be really beneficial.

I know it's hard to get over losing Anquan because of how well he played, but one thing I have always admired about Bill Belichick is his ability to know when to let players go. I'm not happy to see Anquan gone, but I don't think it would have been a move we made had we not felt comfortable with guys like Tandon Doss, Laquan Williams, Tommy Streeter, David Reed, or Deonte Thompson.

Also, from that 6M we saved from trading Boldin, we got the following:
Dumervil 2.5M
Chris Canty 1.5M
Michael Huff, 1.35M
Rolando McClain 1.1M
Marcus Spears 1.2M
David Reed, 880K
Morgan Cox 755k
Ramon Harewood 630k
Chris Johnson 620k
James Ihedigbo 620k
Caleb Hanie 550k
Total Cost: 11.7M

Not bad at all. If you cut out the depth guys, we essentially got Dumervil, McClain, Huff, & Canty for Anquan Boldin.

I gotta say, that's a steal.

As for Pollard, the move makes sense from the perspective that he is a June 1st release, which tells me perhaps we're going to use that money on someone's extension. He also doesn't save us a million. We save (I believe) 2.5M after June 1st.

BTW, does anyone know that Haloti Ngata carries a 16M salary cap the next two (and final two) years of his deal?

Yeah, but why get rid of some of your best players? They now have 79M in 2014 with only 21 guys on the roster? That's a recipe for a meltdown.

I agree regarding Boldin but not Pollard.

Pollard was a good SS, but he didn't offer much in coverage. His best attributes were stopping the run, big hits, & pass rush. Without Ed Reed, he might have really been exposed. We also save 2.5M by doing it after June 1st.

We used the money from cutting Huff to sign:
Nick Roach
Kevin Burnett
Kaluka Maivia
all to multi year deals. In the long run this helps our team better. DHB and Tommy Kelly were no where near are best players. Huff was not our best defensive player (which is sad, considering how bad our D was) so it is ok. We have enough money know to extend Veldheer, Houston, Stefen Wiz, and Denarius Moore all long term. Reggie wants to build his team, he is picking his guys and wants to build through the draft. Keep in mind Huff is 30 years old,

Yeah, but you build a contender through consistency. I guess I understand the idea of putting your own stamp on it, but just cutting talented players is surprising. I'm guessing Huff didn't want to restructure. I can't imagine them cutting him without asking.

Huff was one of their best players on defense. I know that's not saying much but still.

True, I can agree with that. Kelly, McClain, DHB made sense. I think Kelly definitely needed to go. McClain could have been salvaged but I understand the idea behind not salvaging it since he quit on the team. DHB has been a bust but finally started to show something.

I guess Huff shocked me more than anything. Maybe he wasn't the best defensive player, but he still played well & out of position. Keep in mind as well that safeties typically last longer than other positions.

Not being sarcastic here, but why not cut Janikowski while you are at it? Lots of good kickers in the draft. That's the part that makes no sense. I feel like they could have kept Huff.

It's a shame DHB never turned into a good player. He was a good teammate and a hard worker. If he cut Jano the raider nation would attack him. Raiders fans never liked Huff because off his poor tackling, but I agree he was the best player we cut. At 8M, McKenzie didn't feel Huff was worth it.

He thinks huff sucks in run support. He needs a hard hitter next to him(which I don't think is the case. But that's my opinion. I've always though highly of Huff).

Tommy Kelly sucks
DHB was one of the worst picks ever
McClain was an uber talented LB who quit on his team.

Do you really want to give a team like NE or Den or Sea a kicker like Janikowski? Seriously. I wouldn't want to kick vs that in crunch time

Ahh, so the fans disliked Huff, then?

I understood that about Janikowski. I was more asking rhetorically. I'm sure you understood that. Just clarifying just in case. Kinda sad when the FOF is a kicker, lol.

Lol. The entire pats dynasty. All I can think of is the clutch kicks for Adam.

Brady came into his own after that imo

Seattle is the best team in the NFL.

I think we did one hell of an offseason to work with......

I don't see repeat(it's hard to do.... We do have huge needs).

But we are going to field a good team this year.

The only teams I think are better are

Houston
Seattle
Denver
and maybe Cinci

I will give credit where credit is due.

But we are going to be dangerous in a few years!

As far as your better teams, I have to disagree with 3 of them. I think being ultra-talented can only get a team into the post-season, but when it comes down to it, a quarterback has to make plays in the postseason, as we saw with Joe - I've seen Russell Wilson do it. As great as Peyton Manning is all time in the regular season, he always seems to falter in the postseason (as his 4 TD, 7 INT superbowl attests to - if either Grossman or McNair had played half as good as they showed during the regular season, Peyton would be ringless). Cinci - Dalton actually winning a playoff game will be the biggest thing they've done in 20 years. And Houston, Shaub is the same guy - he can't beat top defenses. It's actually funny to me, because Russell Wilson has the least postseason experience and NFL experience in general, but when it comes to the playoffs I trust him more than the other three. The teams that worry me in the post-season, if they get there, are Pittsburgh, Green Bay, and the Giants, possibly the Saints, and maybe the Colts if Luck develops the way many expect him to. But I trust Ben, Eli, and Aaron to play well in the playoffs.
