Pernell McPhee switching to OLB

70 posts in this topic

I thought this was an interesting move. I remember when we did the opposite with Paul Kruger and it was terrible.

I know McPhee didn't live up to his rookie year but from my understanding that was due to an injury. An injury he never really got over. He obviously had a lot of success coming off as a 3-4 DE, I think it is a little too early to tell him to shed weight and play behind suggs or dumervil. I liked the idea of him coming in after Art and Canty stopped the run for the first 2 downs so he could bring some pass rush.

I know the coaches know what they got, they are probably right with the move.

Just found it interesting that they would pull all these position changes AKA Bryan Hall at ILB.

Hopefully it won't be Krugeresque and it will be more JJ esque.

Umm, he had a GREAT rookie year (under Pagano). It was his 2nd year that left something to be desired as a result of injury. Pernell is a football player. Simple as that. They're finding ways to get him involved and out on the field.

They said it isn't a permanent position switch. He's still technically going to be a DE but they want him to rotate in at OLB.

(Warning: this post contains no sarcasm)

Maybe I read it wrong, but I thought they meant that in certain situations they would have McPhee move to an OLB role? Not that he would be in that role full-time. That's how I interpreted the statement. I will go back and re-read it.

Will definitely be interesting to watch. Was expecting more production from him last year after his great rookie year. He did come up VERY clutch in the playoffs though

Okay, that's what I thought it was. I will still go back and double-check this. For my own sake, of course.

I think he could have tremendous success at the rush linebacker spot. He'll be blasting through the OL with a headstart now and can still be able to use his heavy hands. It's what made Ellerbe so successful.. the fact that if he can time the snap count, he will be already be at the gap when the line is just getting out of their stance. And from rookie year, McPhee knows how to time the snap.

Oh let met re-read as well. It's hard to see him do both.

I still think his best chance of getting on the field is at 3-4 DE

But he would still be behind Courtney. They are gonna want Suggs and Dumervil out there as much as possible but when they spell one it would be Upshaw coming in for one. I don't see a scenario where both of them would be off the field.

Does this mean we're going to a 4-3? Or at least more 4-3 packages - Canty, Spears, Hall ti ILB, McPhee to OLB.

McPhee was a very good interior rusher his rookie year. I'm kind of surprised we would move him outside. Either way, I hope he succeeds.

The offseason is the time for experiments on the field.

I wouldn't be surprised to see McPhee get an extended look at OLB in the rotation through preseason, even. Doesn't mean it'd be a permanent switch. Always nice to have another trick up our sleeves, though.

Not so much experimenting
They talked about this before all the guys learn and are able to play multiple positions
Its not new this year. Remember Suggs and adalius played both, upshaw did both, ngata is in multiple spots. It is simply what we do, get the best 11 on the filed and have multiple roles for multiple guys.

We have so much quality depth on the DL that they're just trying to find ways to keep everyone involved. It's hard to keep Jones and McPhee constantly on the field when Canty and Spears are competing for starting positions as well

I know having depth is good but hopefully Spears is just a backup to Jones at 3-4 DE. I really like the d-line of Canty-Ngata-Jones a lot. That would be such a good d-line that our linebackers will be freed up more and due to the pressure our secondary will improve instantly. Just wish they would keep Jones at 3-4 DE and not mess with him. If they want more OLB depth, sign a cheap guy in free agency.

Ravens seem to be moving to more of a traditional 3-4. Of course they will sttill have the multiple fronts, but just looking at the moves that are being made, it seems the more athletic guys are being pushed to LB. The biggest benefit of a 3-4 is the flexibility at LB. Teams aren't supposed to know who's rushing and who's dropping.

Pees asking his LBs to know all LB positions suggests there will be plenty of movement at LB this year. I think it's well known that Pees like to blitz his DBs. This Defense could resemble the 06' Ravens Defense.

Mcphee showed good burst and speed from the outside his rookie year. He showed good power and quicks playing inside during the playoffs. If he can put it all together, I think he'd make a pretty good rush OLB.

Alexir, aren't you the one who came up with Pernellaphant? Either way, love it!

Yeah I did. Someone else came up with Pernie Mac which is also great lol

Yeah butt Suggs Dumervil and Upshaw won't all be off the field at any time. It will always be a combination of those 3 in those 2 spots

I think he played at 280 his rookie year and then bulked to 290ish for this year and was slowed by injury and said he felt like he lost his burst anyways.

Not a bad move, he can still play the position 270ish.

They must have real high hopes for Canty pushing that pocket on a continual basis.
