Rolando McClain to sign with Ravens?

414 posts in this topic

What a perfect low risk, high reward kind of signing. McClain's probably not going to make much more than Ayanbadejo made, or have much more of a hit on the salary cap, and he's only 23. I'm excited about this.

You been on the phone with the Chiefs GM?
Nope, it was reported that that's what their looking for.
You'd have to lock him up long term anyway, so there is zero chance you will sign him/get him. The two teams that come in mind are San Diego or New Orleans

I don't think signing McClain changes our draft at all. McClain is more of a traditional LB who can make plays. He's very, very average in coverage--a kind way of explaining it.

Personally, I like the signing if it happens. We could pair him with Brown or Greene & have a nice tandem inside.
If Brown is that at 32, my personal opinion is that Ozzie takes him. If not, then these are the remaining targets that I'd think would fit:

Jon Bostic, Florida (end of 2nd)
Kiko Alonso, Oregon (mid 3rd)
Sean Porter, Texas A&M (end of 3rd)
Jelani Jenkins, Florida (mid 4th)
Ty Powell, Harding (end of 4th)
Michael Mauti, Penn State (end of 5th)

First off, I think both Porter and Powell can play ILB and with Porter's size, pass rush ability, and coverage ability.. I feel like he could be a perfect WILL in our defense. Could do everything that Ellerbe was able to do IMO. I think all of these guys would fit the WILL role in our defense but I also think Bostic and Mauti could man the MIKE position if Rolando didn't work out.

I don't know if people understand the impact a losing environment can have on a competitive athlete.
like any place of work, it gets to you.
having no urgent need at LB would give us that more of an "unknown" image when the other teams would try to guess us, thus more advantage in instrumenting trades (up)

Rolando defiantly has the mean streak.
Funny, we bring two Oakland raiders, and our d has potential to be the nastiest(meanest) in the nfl
For me it's not just the two raiders, it's all the young, hungry pieces we are adding. They, all together as a unit, have me excited.

Went 7-1 my first year ever playing football and only lost on a fluke.. my 8th grade year.. same guys.. 1-8. Talk about a rough year of football... With all that blood, sweat, and tears that go into the game, it's hard looking at that scoreboard and seeing constant failure. Also followed up a 12-4 season my sophomore year that included a state championship to a 3-7 season of getting our brains beat out week to week. From experience, it takes its toll.. and I only have experienced high school.. can't imagine dedicating my life to the game and having that type of experience.

agree, we can find a good LBer in the later rounds (for myself, Bostic would do lol), so we can even trade up in the first to grab somebody we like at other positions

For nobody to know Rolando personally you guys do a lot of bashing
Even though I advocate the signing, I must say that you don't need to know a guy personally to criticize a guy for being arrested, smiling, and writing, "eff y'all" on the ticket.

I think that Ozzie is setting us up to have a great defense this year! R and J will be known as the 2 Macs. I guess this will open the door to sign that receiver that some of us were calling for in the first round of the draft.

Further proof, PFT is now saying Rolando is close to a contract with the Ravens.

Fully agreed. Barring another slew of injuries, I'll be surprised if the D isn't notably better next season.

Some of those I disagree.

I really don't see much coverage skills from Bostic. He looks more like McClain to me, except McClain is a better tackler.

I agree regarding the rest, but what about Khaseem Greene?! I think he has a lot of talent. I would definitely take him if we got McClain.

Alonso is a guy I really like because of the talent & physicals, but having him & McClain is a bit risky considering Alonso's character concerns. I still love Alonso, though.

I'm sticking to my belief that Brown makes it to us. Just not sure we take him. I hope we do. I believe Brown has a very good chance of being a Raven--just as I did with Jimmy Smith when we took him.

My thoughts on his number..

#57 (as of right now, I bet he goes with this #)
#59 (if he didn't prefer 57, #59 would be my second guess for available #'s)
#54 (could buy it off of Adrian Hamilton maybe)

The dark horse for the # for me is #53.. With Jameel's health and this signing, if we get a solid ILB in the draft Jameel may be cut. Rolando wore #8 in high school so #53 makes sense for him since #55 is in no way.. ever.. ever ever.. available.
57 has been unofficially retired for OJ Brigance so I doubt we'll see him in that jersey.

Well, guess it's time to admit I was wrong about Ozzie making a quick move on him lol.

After this signing, I am not nearly as opposed to it as I was. I would still prefer an ILB or LT because with our defensive line and outside linebackers, and what I think Rolando will bring to the defense, I believe the weak link will be Jameel coming off his injury. If we added a 1st rounder like Arthur Brown or even Te'o to play next to Rolando, who will have the defensive line that we will in front of them.. Wow... just simply.. wow.

If we sign him, I think we avoid an ILB in the first round. The more I look at it, the more I like the chances of a DeAndre Hopkins or Kennan Allen being that falling prospect we snatch at 32. If we pull that off, then we have: Ed = Huff, Kruger = Dumervil, Boldin = Allen, Ray = McClain. We could then pair McClain with a guy like Kiko Alonso or Kevin Reddick in the second or third round. That right there would give me a team I'd be comfortable going into next season with, regardless of the other picks.

I'm just not very high on Greene. I wouldn't be upset if we took him and I should've included him because he does fit the bill.

#51 is a possibility too but I wouldn't be surprised if he got #54 from Hamilton and Hamilton would go to a 90s #.

I just hope they can all gel early in the season and not wait until halfway through to get on the same page. I want to destroy whoever we face in the opener.

So, apparently Rolando called Labbe with Madison Weekly News so he could be the first to break the story to help his career. Labbe is a great guy and this is one of those small things that shows that Rolando does have some good in there. Let's not give up on him yet!
