Michael Oher's contract

He's going to want 7 million a year and a 4 or 5 year contract.
Yes, I think so too.
Oher is very good at RT spot and I think switching him between LT and RT is contributing to the inconsistencies at LT spot. I think if he stays healthy and plays RT he is a Pro Bowl potential there. And if he makes the Pro Bowl this year I say give him 5 year deal around 35 mil.

That sound like Oneil Cousins not Oher. Oher is way better than serviceable at RT. You didn't even hear Von Miller's name in the playoff game minus the one play. What serviceable RT can block Von Miller who had 17 sacks last year. He's serviceable at LT IMO around average for that position not elite and not below average. In a pinch he's fine.
He has a long history of below average to average play at RT and LT. It just gets covered more at RT because most teams better rusher is on the other side. He's not a good OT bottom line. People want to remember how he played as a rookie and assume he has been that good his entire career on the right side, but in reality he has been bad. Facts are facts.

How can that be a fact?

You think Oher is a bad RT? He struggled early in 2011, but in my eyes played much better down the stretch that year, and he did stellar in the playoffs. He doesn't even have a very large sample size at RT. Beasted in 2009, was half and half in 2011 and beasted again in the 2012 playoffs. Didn't play there at all in 2010.

Did you watch the Colts playoff game? Freeney and Mathis never touched Flacco. The Broncos game ( Miller and Dumervil) did nothing outside of the one play Miller got. The Patriots never touched Flacco. The Superbowl with (Aldo and Justin Smith) made one play but it was on McKinnie's side. Do you watch Oher play or do you just recite what people say about him? At RT when he plays Flacco is rarely touched. At the LT spot Flacco is harrassed pretty frequently by speed rushers. Osemele got abused by speed rushers at the RT spot. Osemele is an elite guard like Yanda and Oher is a very good RT.

In 2011 played poorly most of the season. That is about half of his experience on the right side. As a LT he has been even worse... so at best we are talking about an average OT. I don't think he has ever "beasted" as you like to put it. Overall his performance has been poor. He doesn't deserve a big pay day by any means and the idea of him starting at LT is disturbing. If we pay him 5M a year as a RT who can fill in at LT in a pinch thats fine, but he isn't anywhere close to a top RT. If it were up to me he would be cut and Eric Winston or Tyson Clabo would be on the roster at a smaller cap number. The only value Oher brings is ability to swing to LT and not be a complete turnstile.

You're delusional. Winston and Clabo both have given up more sacks at RT than Oher.

I never said anything about LT, or paying him a big contract. If someone gives him more than he's worth, we can let him walk, and that's fine with me. He's never been good on the left side, but again, I said nothing about that.

You don't have to like the term "beasted," but is there really any denying he played very well at RT during those times, except for what I would call an up and down 2011?

I could understand Winston but Clabo? Clabo would get eaten up in this division.

2011 is a pretty big sample size though, you can't just dismiss it like it didn't happen. He had a few bright spots no doubt, by the majority of 2011 was poor. I would like to see him play this next year at RT and hope he can play like he did as a rookie, but I don't know if he is capable. To be fair Im not sure it is completely his fault as switching sides each season can't be easy, but I just want to see him play an entire season at a high level before a longterm investment.

Clabo has been a very good and very consistent player for Atl. Why they gave a big contract to Baker and cut Clabo is beyond me.

I don't have the exact numbers but I know for a fact both have been consistently better in pass-protection than Oher. I doubt they have given up more sacks, but factoring in penalties and total pressures allowed they are far superior.

Eh I dont think much of Clabo, run of the mill RT to me. Slow feet, doesn't offer much. He's lucky he played in the NFC South and the plethora of mediocre pass rushers in my eyes.

Even if we keep Oher & keep him at LT, I would love to have Clabo. As you said, he's been a good RT for them. I think he's really underrated to an extent. I would like him here. He would reduce a need and provide insurance if we let go of Oher in 2014.

I'm not conveniently dismissing it because I think it was bad. I said it was up and down, not poor overall.

I agree with the rest of what you said, though. He's replaceable, no doubt.

Clabo hasn't faced near the pass rushers Oher has gone against in his career. Outside of Bennett who came on this year I can't think of a prolific rusher that Clabo has consistently went up against. Plus there would be absolutely no running the ball to Clabo's side in the AFC North.

Oher was a first round pick so obviously there's high expectations for him, but at RT he's exactly what he's supposed to be. The RT isn't supposed to be a premier pass blocker. In today's NFL is that a blessing, yes but I can't think of many teams that have legit pass blocking LTs and RTs. Oher has always been a better run blocker and at RT, that's what he's supposed to be. Ontop of that he can play LT if necessary due to injury. Not many RTs can do that and the offense not totally collapse.

Like on defense, we like guys who can adapt to multiple positions, Yanda and Osemele are similar to Oher in that regard. Unless Oher's contract demands are out of control I don't see how we don't bring him back.

Charles Johnson and Greg Hardy are better than any pair if pass-rushers in the AFC North.

In today's NFL the RT does have to be a pass-blocker because most teams have good rushers from both sides. Someone did a study showing that across the NFL just as many pressures were given up on the right side as the left. Considering the fact that we invested a lot of money in our QB I am not comfortable having a poor pass-blocker on either side of the line.

While Oher has had stretches of excellence, he always follows them up with stretches of pathetic play. In 2009 and 2010, Oher played very well at LT and RT. However, he tanked it in 2011. He was awful throughout the majority of the 2011 season. In 2012, his play was outstanding for the first half of the regular season. Around the midway point, he just forgot how to pass block and tanked. He played very well in the postseason, but he was still pathetic for a good chunk of the season.

Oher is a very inconsistent player. It's really hard to rank him because one week he'll look like an All-Pro and the next week he'll have me thinking we brought Oniel Cousins back.

Ya now they are one of the top. For the majority of Oher's career that distinction went to Harrison and Woodley with virtually no contest. They were the best edge duo in the league, and Oher has gone up against the both for a season.

At LT, I 100% have issues with Oher there. RT he has done fine in my eyes.

We both have our own opinions, which is completely unacceptable...lol jk.

I think we've all come to realize that Oher isn't that Elite LT we all thought we were potentially getting when he was a 1st rounder. He is what he is. A Solid, durable, dependable starting RT, which is fine in my opinion. I hope the LT experiment is over, especially coming up on a new contract. I definitely want him to stick around in Baltimore for a decent price.

Clabo gave up 5 sacks in the first four weeks. He pitched a shutout after that. Winston averages 7.5 sacks given up a season. If Winston is so good why does he keep needing to find a job every off season? On the RT spot Oher is better than both and alot younger he's 26 will be 27 for next season. Clabo is 31 will be 32 during the season and Winston is 29 will be 30 during the season. Oher fits the youth movement. If we can get a LT that's effective and we can keep Oher at RT our team is better. Von Miller is the best pass rusher in football and Oher shut him down minus the one play where Flacco ran into him because Dumervill caused the pocket to collapse.

So basically he isn't very good. Now as I mentioned earlier there is more to rating pass blocking than just sacks. Pressures are also very detrimental to the offense. I have posted these numbers before but in Ohers first three years he was in the bottom third of the league in pass blocking. That includes two seasons at RT, even his stellar rookie campaign.

https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2012/07/12/three-years-of-pass-blocking-efficiency-offensive-tackles/

Two names at the top of the list? Clabo and Winston. Both had strong 2012 seasons as well while Oher had another disappointing campaign at LT.

Even on that link Oher wasn't the worst. He didn't give up the most sacks or hurries. Just based on that list he's around the 23rd best LT and 16th best Rt give or take a position. Those numbers IMO don't mean much I go by our wins and losses. With Oher on Rt or LT we go to the playoffs and he plays average on the LT spot and above average on the RT spot. If you don't like the guy that's fine I do. I'd rather have him on the RT side than LT spot but we can win with him on either side. If you go by that sites stats Flacco is barely a top 20 QB. Romo has better stats than Flacco but Flacco's the better QB. With Oher on the RT spot in the playoffs he performed at an elite level. That is a fact.
