Even though I was getting tired of hearing his politics, he was a good player for the price. Will be 37 soon so time to retire.

Next on the chopping block, Leach. I will be shocked if they keep him at his current cap #.

That'd be a mistake. Rice isn't much of a runner without a lead blocker.

Why are we letting all these players go?!? It's beyond questionable at this point, regardless of who we might get in the draft later this month.
$$$

You know Flacco's contract is expensive, and any carry-over cap is precious at this point.

Oher, Pitta, Jones, and others are going to be free agents next year too.

Ayanbadejo is turning 37 years old, so it's better to cut now, then too late.
He was a core special teamer last year, but that was about it.
At least he won a ring.

Contrary to popular belief, Joe Flacco's contract is not cap heavy the first two years (maybe even the first three years).
Like I said any carry-over is good at this point.

Flacco's contract is going to be monstrous in 3 years.

We also probably going to have to save money for Dennis Pitta and Torrey Smith, whom I consider as franchise-type players.

Lol a back with such elusiveness and low center of gravity would be fine without a fullback every play. Caldwell ran a single back set 95% of the time, with the idea of adding another wr or tight end to the formation. Rice will be fine.

This move was inevitable due to his decline in play, but the cap space situation was already much more than enough for our incoming draft class. I think we are gong to see something else happen soon, whether it be another FA add, or a new contract for Pitta, etc. Maybe all of the above.

Maybe McKinnie? I would like to see Pitta signed longterm more than anything else though.

A fine man of character whose leadership will be missed.
I admired his outspokenness - not a popular stance to take in the world of football. Especially loved the work he did with Torrey for the softer side campaign against animal abuse.

However, seeing all the exciting young players who got bumped to IR or the practice squad after a good pre-season showing, I understand the need to clear a spot. Omar Brown, Bobby Rainey, Asa Jackson and Deonte Thompson have all earned a little playing time and showed the potential to light it up.

I will especially miss hearing announcers butcher Brendon's name on a weekly basis. Now, THAT was entertaining!

I like the direction of the team.

Out with the old regime of Ray Lewis and Ed Reed along with all the notable players we had in the past decade like Todd Heap, Derrick Mason, and other players. I think Suggs and is next on the chopping board because he is in the time of decline.
And in with the new regime of Joe Flacco and Ray Rice.
I've been meaning to find this out but there's been no appropriate place to ask. How much can a team carry over? And is there a limit to the number of years that it can go back?

One of these days my posts will progress to more input than questions, but for now I'm still new to following the nfl.

We will be fine, the youth movement continues due the fact that the Ravens are trying to structure a new core. They have their core on offense with Flacco, Smith, and Rice, now for the D. Since Reed, Lewis, Kruger, and Ellerbe are gone, the ravens need to establish a young group of talent that they can invest in for the next decade or so. Yes we still Ngata and Suggs but they are close to the other side of 30 and the team needs to think about who will replace them once they start to decline. That and making sure we get the right players for the right price to stay competitive and that pretty much sums up this season.

zomg Harbs' ego is totes killing the team!

It was a matter of time for BA. He can only play ST on a ILB-hungry team.

He was expendable.

His play last season was mediocre, both while subbing for Ray and his special teams play, though I understand how difficult it was to perform under the pressure of replacing RLewis as a starter, the comparison.

Ageing can be a ugly beast, it gives little slack.

Wow, what a roster remake. Youth must be served.

He will be 37 by the time the season starts...He has been declining and he is only a special teams player.

A lot of big runs (while not completely his fault) happened when he left his lane. He seemed like he was trying to do to much. A lot of players make those types of mistakes later in their careers when the young guys start to surpass them in stats and big plays made.

It was time. I'm surprised he didn't retire after getting a Superbowl Ring.

Well think of it this way, for the first few weeks teams we play won't know what to make of our defense; Pees will be able to send guys from anywhere and other than Suggs and Doom they won't know who they need to account for.

You need glasses if you didn't see this one coming.
So true. After Pees said he requires all of the LBs to know all four spots to maximize talent on the field and hinting Upshaw will have a shot at ILB, Ab's fate was sealed. Why spend 1 Mil on a player who will play specials teams and maybe be a relief for an ILB? It makes no sense when we could draft a player or get an UDFA to play the same role but at half the price.
