They have done it before, and they do it on Christmas and Thanksgiving. I repeat absolutely no reason not to do it on Rosh Hashanah.
Rosh Hashanah is a high holiday in the Jewish religion and you are being very ignorant. Thanksgiving is a family holiday which involves a big meal and watching football has been a regular thing. Christmas Day is different as well.

On Rosh Hashanah most Jews will be in Synagouge praying and Baltimore has a high Jewish population so having the game on that day would be a bad idea when compared to the last time they have done it. Watching Football while with the family is one thing but were talking about a holiday were religious people will be praying all day. No chance to go and watch football.

You think they would have football on Christmas Eve when everyone is spending quality family time, going to evening church and midnight mass? No chance.

We aren't really that relevant right now, even if we are the current SB champs. Pretty much everyone outside of Baltimore picked the 49ers and believes that we are in a rebuilding mode. We wont be seen as a competitive team come this next season, NFL doesn't want that debacle of a home opener last year.
Come on, where's your Ravens spirit?! Through all the injuries and slumps the Ravens suffered last season, they were able to pull themselves up by the bootstraps and go on a run that shocked all the critics. BAL has the resolve of champions!

They won 93 games, it was only "skin of their teeh" because they play on one of the toughest divisions. They sell plenty of tickets when they're competitive and the games matter, which was the case last year for the first time in over a decade, but anyone who grew up watching the Orioles is hoping that last year was a sign of what's to come, and not a Cundiff in 2010.

I actually think they will have a legit shot to win the division especially since the Yanks will finally most like be non-factors for once, and so will the Sox, so it'll be between us, Tampa and Toronto
The Yankees aren't just going to roll over and die. They're still a potent regular-season threat. Factor in the emergence of the Blue Jays and the always dangerous Rays and the Orioles will have one helluva job this season.

I wish they would lose all their fans now. Seriously, there's another baseball team right down the road that isn't so poorly managed and incredibly cheap.
Shout out to the Nationals! What an exciting team they're morphing into!

Really, some of these comments are just pathetic. If you don't like baseball that's cool, but there's a lot of people posting on here who I feel are not fully educated on the whole situation.

It's not the orioles fault.
Some people are so hellbent on blaming Angelos they refuse to see.Never mind that the White Sox,the players union, and MLB had to sign off this well. The NFL as well as NBC doesn't escape the hit on this either. They ruled out Wednesday the 4th right off the bat, thereby making this baseballs problem.

You're a Yankees fan so your bias, and btw last season the O's made it to the 2nd round. (Beat 2x defending AL champs in elimination game).

So yeah, the O's for the first time in 15 years are now very relevant in Baltimore again.
That's besides the point. The Ravens are still a much more relevant team. They'll be defending their Super Bowl title, while the Orioles will still be trying to cobble together another Wild Card.

That is a good point about Christmas eve, I don't know what they do in that situation. I don't remember the last time they had Christmas eve on a Sunday. Maybe they would move all those games to Saturday?

Well they were. Simply put:

- NFL could have had the game Wednesday.

and
- The MLB could have moved the Thursday game to Sat and had a double header, giving the players of both teams Thursday off.

Easy isn't it? They can all go jump off a bridge.

bottom line: O's will take the fall out from this debacle because we all know that baseball games are re-scheduled within days all the time for weather so is it really that difficult to do so six months before you have to play the game? No it isn't.

Heaven help the O's if that game is rained out anyway and made into a Saturday double header. PR diaster coming right up.

They're not more relevant to strictly oriole fans. And they'll most likely be in the hunt for the division. ....while the Yankees on the other hand...

It is not the O's fault nor the O's problem. I would never think of blaming the Orioles for this. I don't understand how others are.

Even if the orioles wanted to do that, Why would the white sox agree to that? They only postpone game that they're forced too, I wish it was that simple I really do, but it's a major disadvantage for both teams.

I still just don't see why it cant be played on Wednesday. That makes everything easier. Too much pride? Money has everything to do with it

Rosh Hashanah lasts until Friday, so they will still be playing during that holiday when they play on Thursday.

Like I said before, the Orioles better pray that they're actually contending. If they are, people won't care. If they aren't....

The Ravens' fanbase is way bigger than the Oriole's, don't even pretend that it isn't. From a sheer economic standpoint, it would make more sense to the city of Baltimore to have the Ravens' home opener.

I'm starting to wonder now if this really was the NFLs fault. No disrespect to any jewish fans here, but what does football have to do with messing up rosh hasanah? Seriously? So the NFL can totally disregard Christmas, but yet when its rosh hasanah its "oh no we can't play on that holiday"? Where is the logic here, because I'm trying to figure this out?

If anything, and I know ravens fans don't want to here it, but if it does turn out to be goodell and the NFL, we should boycott going to and watching the Ravens opener, then they will see how much us ravens fans are ticked off.

And oh wow, this couldn't have ever happened to the Ravens could it? oh no, no. What a coincidence....
I'm not Jewish, but I believe Rosh Hashanah is the second biggest "Day of Rest" for the Jewish people, which like the guy in The Big Lebowski means:
they can't watch tv?

anyone can say for sure if this is true? Either way, it shouldn't matter. Opening day on a Wednesday night pls.

I know College Football plays on Saturdays so I don't think they would do that. The biggest issue is they don't want to mess with viewership of the game as the first game of the Season gets a lot of views. They'd rather move a home game to an away game than change the day to where less people would watch. Moving the location only affects the fans but not the money.

I mean it will be a first game of the season no matte when they play it. They could always just give the Ravens the first sunday night or Monday night game. Hell couldn't they even just pack the house in Baltimore. Seems like if they can plan for a Grand Prix they could plan for two ball games in one night.

Not to be insensitive, but Jews are an extreme minority and as someone else pointed out they've played on Rosh Hashanah before and the holiday continues through the Thursday game anyway. To strip an entire team and city from its victory game because of baseball and some holiday, no matter what it is, is an outrage.

There isn't really a rule about watching TV on Rosh Hashanah. It's that there are night services and a family dinner as well to celebrate the New Year. This isn't a Thanksgivings type meal though. It's Khakis a Button down, dimmed lights with a quiet setting and conversation taking place.
