A safety that can both cover and tackle?? This is going to be weird! He has only missed 18 tackles his whole career! Reed last year missed 16, we all love Reed but this is an upgrade
At this point in their respective careers, I'd be inclined to agree. On a price per performance basis, Huff is clearly the better deal though. We got him for 40% of what the Texans paid Reed, if my math is correct.

Before the Dumervil and Huff signings we had roughly 7,7 millions in cap space. Dumervil's cap number this year is 2,5 million and it looks like Huff's is roughly 2 millions. However by the "Rule of 51" the team now can take away the 50 and 51st cap nummbers (both 480k) so Dumervil and Huff "eats" roughly 3,5 million of the 7,7 we had before.

Leaving us with a current cap space of roughly 3,7 million. The rookies should take somewhere between 1 to 1,5 million of this. Our 1st and 2nd rounder should be the only ones that fully count against the cap (being that they will be the only ones that get contracts that average over 480k a year) based on our current pics. So the 1st and 2nd pick should count for about 1,2 to 1,4 million in lost cap space and then we lose some cap space for the rest of the draft picks signing bonuses. It should land somewhere around 1,5 to 1,7 million as of our current picks.

This means Ozzie has about 2 million in cap space to play with still and he will also get another 2 million after 1st of June when the Pollard money kicks in.

Anyone betting we could get McKinnie or maybe Gaither back in for under 2 million?
Plus we get 2M more in cap room when Pollard's contract comes off on June 1. It doesnt leave us much room, but enough to make another small signing or two. Possibly a LB or OL.

This was such an intelligent post until you suggested bring back that punk Gaither. :P

Another solid signing. I firmly believe Huff will revive his career as a Raven like so many other past vets have.

Ozzie has done a nice job revamping the defense.. It needed it.

Chris Canty DE
Marcus Spears DT
ELVIS DUMERVIL OLB
And now Michael Huff FS/CB

Huff and Ihedigbo will be a solid group back there!

Now, the focus is getting an ILB.. Whether we go young and risky in Rolando McClain once he is released or go older and safer as a stop gap in Karlos Dansby.

If not addressed before the draft, I believe ILB just became round 1 priority! With all those draft picks, TRADE UP FOR ARTHUR BROWN!!!!!!!!!
I read a rumor Carolina might cut Jon Branson. That could be a player. Ozzie swoops in for.

I think Omar could definitely be better than Huff if he was given a chance to start. Just my opinion though.
This yr??? That makes no sense. I love Omar's potential but he didn't even make the team coming out of camp this year.
I don't think you can argue my opinion doesn't make sense since it is my opinion and it makes sense to me. You could say I don't understand how you reached that conclusion and I disagree or something along those lines. Also I don't believe I said anything about this year it was just a general statement and making the team coming out of camp doesn't necessarily mean you are better than those who didn't.... **cough** Sergio Kindle **cough**

I believe your original premise was that you thought Omar should start over Huff and you wanted the young guys to start. Perhaps i was mistaken... thus the many question marks after this yr haha. Kindle they wanted to give the guy every chance to actually do something productive. ie they didn't want another James harrison on their hands. Omar on the other hand is a great surprise but not ready to start, although he could certainly make strides that way through camp. They didn't think they were in danger of losing him off the practice squad due to how raw he was.

Also I feel like I automatically rank Okafor lower because of how the Serg turned out even though it is completely irrational.

Hey, you can also use the whole Harrison example we all know.

Personally, I think Brown has major talent. He impressed me heavily last year. I hope he beats Huff out in camp, personally. The guy has talent. I don't know how he gets near the ball. He reminds me of Reed as well in that regard. But, the best player will get that spot. The best player will play FS, Huff or Brown or some other guy.

Unbelievable how cheap we got him at too. This was a great pickup considering the cost. Saved 9 mil in comparison to Reed, for a younger player who can double as a corner if needed.

SMH, this cat!

I hope Huff takes a number under 40. My personal 'bias' I guess but I don't like the 40-49 numbers... except for Morgan Cox

It was only a matter of time. Great signing.

And for everyone saying his cap hit is probably around $2mill I would have to disagree and assume its less, but we'll have to wait until the guaranteed portion is announced.

Probably a hit of 1.5mil this year.

So now we've upgraded FS and OLB for cheaper than it would have cost us to resign our guys, all while doing it with cut guys so we get the comp picks.

Does everyone truly understand the genius/magic of Ozzie??? I mean really? Think of it as we traded Kruger for Dumervil, $2mil/yr cap space (average), and a 3rd-6th round draft pick and traded 1 year of Reed for 3 years of a better player in Huff and another one of those draft picks.

We are lucky fans. Times like these I feel bad for Cleveland, Miami, buffalo, Oakland..... Wait no I don't.

My Raider friends told me good riddance and that this guy couldn't tackle, I mean at all.

But he is damn good in coverage.
Back to back all pros.

Well done Ozzie

He tackles better than Ed Reed at this point and his outstanding coverage skills (Huff I'm speaking of) is more important to us than his tackling. He is strong against the run though (hard hitter a la Pollard), so maybe these guys weren't looking as closely.

Pair Huff with one of Omar Brown, Christian Thompson, and a draft pick like Swearinger (yeah I know), and our secondary is younger and faster and better.

I'm really excited about our defense and we haven't gotten to the draft yet.

So the one knock on Ed Reed’s game, who Huff will replace, is that he doesn’t tackle anymore. What does Huff bring to the table in that department? According to Pro Football Focus, Huff missed just 18 tackles in the last three seasons. Ed Reed missed 16 in 2012 alone. Not to say that Huff is an elite talent like Ed Reed. But he is solid, reliable, and from things I’m reading it’s a great deal the Ravens got.

The fact that Huff can play the cornerback position tells me that he is great in coverage. Huff probably won’t be a centerfield type of safety like Reed is. He’ll be hanging around providing coverage help on tight ends and slot guys. Having someone like him around will again make life easier for a rookie inside linebacker, should Baltimore look that direction in the draft. It seems like the addition of Spears and Canty on the line, Dumervil and Suggs setting the edges, and Huff behind them, that Ozzie is trying to set up a situation where a young ILB can have great success. Or maybe set up a situation where some rookie mistakes won’t be as exploited because there is plenty of talent around to back him up.

Looks like Huff is good at tackling to me.

Looks promising. Nothing amazing, but we're not really after a long-term game-changer anyway (save that for the draft :D ), and it looks like we got a solid stop-gap for a low price. Can't really complain about that.

I know, right? I'm already dying to see our new-look defence, but we have to wait until September. :(

your opinion makes absolutely no sense, omar brown did not make the roster. he was undrafted, someone has a mad crush on the kid when he has never even been playing defense against a 1st team.. let it go mayne, kid is raw with some talent

Actually Omar was on the roster last year when we played the Broncos through the Bengals. He registered a sack and a fumble recovery in the limited amount of plays he was on the field for.

Super excited about the Huff signing and the prospects I see on various Mock Drafts. What do you all think about the possibility of bringing in Charles Woodson? He is older, but still can play if he is healthy. Brings a lot of leadership and his price should not be to high. Thoughts?
