Thursday Season Opener Conflict - Ravens to Open Season on the Road

Seriously, has ANYONE found Goodell's reasoning for not playing on Wednesday? I know .. Rosh Hashanah. The problem have with that is what others have pointed out. In 2012, Rosh Hashanah fell on Sept 16th-20th. Sept 16th was a Sunday ... do you know who played? EVERYBODY. Every NFL team except the Bears and Packers played (Broncos and Falcons on MNF). So how is it that a 6 months ago, it was fine and dandy for the entire NFL to play on that day, but the Ravens need to be moved to another city to open?

Edit: Forgot to add, it also happened on Monday, Sept 29th 2008. MNF that night, Ravens vs Steelers.

Ravens org decision, not the NFL.

So why won't they give us the Sunday Night Opener instead? I feel playing on Sunday Night is more special compared to Thursday Night Football, and if they want a game on Thursday, book SF for that night against Seattle or something. I just don't see why the NFL just won't move the game to Sunday Night.

We would lose the "mini bye".

Is this really a big deal? We can just have the celebration a week later. Losing home field advantage sucks, but we'd be playing whatever the team is away from home at one point or another, anyway.

Exactly. And it's actually an advantage. We get the extra rest after a road game that we would otherwise not get. And we have a long time to game plan for a tough opponent that will presumably be Denver. And maybe they make the home opener a Sunday night game which will allow for a full day of pre game celebration.

I can appreciate all of the consternation concerning the revenue lost by the city, the loss of the "hailing of the Champions" before the first NFL game, etc.. But what matters most is the success of the Team. Right? At the end of the day that is what should make us happy as fans of the Ravens.

Yes I can and I started by not buying an Orioles shirt for the toddler. I can vote with my purse and we are not going to any games even if we are given the tickets-- not much but it makes me feel better.

I really don't know how you can blame the O's on this one. Total goodell money grab. It wasn't the O's call, it was the players association and the white sox as well. God forbid the O's play their schedule when Wednesday is wide open. Poor goodell wouldn't get as many ratings, boo hoo

This is totally on the NFL/NBC for refusing to play Wednesday. Their "excuse" just doesn't hold water.

We can have our home opener either Sunday or Monday of the following week. We can even have back to back home games.

Am I the only one that reads that the decision not to play on Wednesday was the Ravens org decision, not the NFL/NBC? Quote directly from an article on our web site;

"The Ravens did not want to move to Wednesday because it’s the start of Rosh Hashanah."

I think the home opener will be the following Sunday night, after we travel to Denver on Thursday the week before,

The article here does indeed say it was the Ravens' decision, however, the initial report and the current ESPN reports claim it was Goodell and the NFL. I know for a fact that there was a motion to move the game to Wednesday at the owners' meeting that was tabled.

From the article posted on baltimoreravens.com an hour ago...

"Goodell and Ravens Team President Dick Cass said moving the Ravens game to Wednesday is not up for consideration because that's the first day of the Jewish holiday Rosh Hashanah."

Given that games have been played on this holiday in the past, it seems this is the desire of the Ravens organization.

What lemonade? What is the lemonade? Fans and the city get screwed and there is nothing they can do to compensate for that.

Hey NFL, due to the conflict make an exception! Move the Ravens game to become the first Sunday night game. Let the runner-ups play that Thursday (San Fran, Atlanta). It would attract just as many viewers. That way you avoid creating hostile feelings within a city or toward one or the other league.

I think we'll get the following Sunday night game. Full day to celebrate prior to our home opener SB celebration!

Get the Denver road game out of the way with the extra rest and extra time to game plan.

It would be a kickoff concert of some sort and would end before the game however, generally they don't end all that far off from kickoff (because you know, every other SB champ opens in their own city and all that jazz) so the fans would end up missing much of the game heading home from the concert. And besides, if the "logistics" included traffic (which was said) wouldn't a concert be an issue too? You know, just sayin'.
as soon as they said that I was like ummm if you can't fit everyone in, and the traffic etc ....they are trying to stave off a pr nightmare and not thinking before they speak . this whole thing stinks. wouldn't it have made more sense to make the second game of the season a celebration but if we lose game one lol.it sucks.

It will be just like any other Raven Home Opener. Big deal. And if we lose Week 1 (not saying we will, but we could) won't be much of a celebration at all.

Not to mention there is no guarantee we go to Denver.

I keep seeing people saying this, but they never point to a source. Every news organization and the NFL website itself says on this matter: 'The league doesn't want to play football on Wednesday, Sept. 4, because it's Rosh Hashanah, so the Ravens will open on the road, according to NFL spokesman Greg Aiello.'

Do you have a source that it's the Ravens decision?
I hate baseball only thing worse is golf. I would go to a game or two a year to support the local team and buy the kids a shirt or 2 because of what happened to the Colts, but after years of the current ownership and the way they treated the Ravens This year and in the past-- they can pound salt.

I looked at both the Orioles' and White Sox's schedules and they start a 3-game series on July 2, with neither scheduled for a game on Monday, July 1. Why couldn't they have rescheduled the September 5 game to July 1? Seems like a simple solution.
Nah like action !!!!!!! I really tried to get back into it last year-- I couldn't especially with no arena team or NFLE.

I also hate what Angelo's did to a very proud and storied franchise.

In the Baltimore Sun article, it states that the league and the Ravens talked about Wednesday but it was tabled because of a negative reaction from local Jewish groups.

Still wonder who it is that pulled the plug and caved to the "negative reaction".

EDIT: Now I found the section in the article you were talking about. It still isn't clear, but to me this says it was Goodell. Relevant part:

"The Orioles are playing in Cleveland on Sept. 4, but Goodell didn't want to play the kickoff game -- and have all the pomp and circumstance that comes with it -- on the first night of Rosh Hashanah.

The San Francisco 49ers hosted the Detroit Lions on Sunday Night Football on the first night of the holiday last year, but the league and the Ravens say they spoke to local Jewish groups who were opposed to a Sept. 4 night game in Baltimore."

i feel bad for the fans that booked rooms and flights since the game was the only 'no brainer' of the season -- a concert on a Thursday night is not enough bang for the buck, again I would bet no one thought of them.

I think your confusion lies on who would make the announcement. The Ravens would make the NFL aware of their wishes and the NFL(Goodell) would be the one to make it public as ultimately they are the decision makers. It seems pretty obvious that the Ravens made the decision since they have played NFL games on this holiday in the past.

It seems to me that the NFL initially did not want to do a Wednesday and after checking with the local groups it was more of a joint decision. Ultimately it doesn't matter. If the Ravens think they are showing respect to Modell with this decision, I disagree. I think he'd be horrified at the city and the fans getting shafted in such a manner.

We probably can't change it but we should make our voices heard.
That would mean 25 straight games for the O's....not happening. And the White Sox are already home playing a series against the Indians. I'm sure they aren't going to agree to pack up, fly to b'more for 1 game, and then turn right around to fly home and play the O's at their park for 3 games. Again...not happening.
