Beach Etiquette

When you're on the beach, don't let your overly excited giant of a dog off the leash when you see a toddler standing not even 20 feet in front of you, directly in your dog's line of sight. Just a little tip. ;) My 15-month-old today learned the difference between good dog (ours) and crazy dog (old man who thought it'd be ok to unleash chaos right in front of him). It knocked Andrew down, scared him, unintentionally, but it happened too quickly for me to scoop him up beforehand. Public beach, let's be civilized. Sorry, I had to rant this one off!
That's terrible for someone to possibly ruin dogs for a youngster.

Exactly! Andrew's used to our Rex. He's a Labradoodle, wouldn't hurt a fly. If I wasn't worried about him, it probably would have been a humorous scene. He said, "look, doggie!" Two seconds later, boom! Took Andrew out, nearly took me out, and all the owner did was view the situation and say, "Zeke (I think), come on!" Didn't apologize; nothing. I picked my son up and started up toward where my husband and other son were, and the dog followed for a second. Then the owner called for him again, and he ran off the other way. The guy walked in front of us, turned his head, smiled, and waved. I wanted to say something mean to him, but my husband shushed me. I just can't believe how rude some people can be.

I never let my dogs off their leashes. I am afraid of big dogs, I got mauled twice by a rottie when I was a homecare nurse 10 yrs ago, i still have scars on my arm. MY sister's lab is the large dog I tolerate.
Very rude indeed. If you aren't going to use a leash then you damn well better have well trained dogs that won't cause any problems and if an accident occurs you need to apologize.

I looked up the laws for dogs on St. Augustine Beach. Dogs are allowed, but they must remain on a leash. I know 80% of people probably break that law, but who's to say that your 'friendly' dog might accidentally have a reaction to someone and bite them? That's why they have leash laws! I was so angry about that situation. My husband is very lax when it comes to things like that, but my mama bear instinct kicks in over drive! :)

Most beaches that I go to, dogs arent allowed. I do like to go the the doggie beaches every once in a while with my roomie's little dog, but I have seen some mean dogs there. Some owners are just flat irresponsible.

Well when we lived down here, we used to go either to St. Augustine Beach or down the coast a bit to Flagler Beach. Both are dog friendly, both with lease laws, but Flagler actually has a designated area that dogs are allowed to be in. We used to bring our dog out all the time, but we followed the rules. I know that sounds crazy, but we actually did what was right.

And it's pretty bad when your 5-year-old looks at the situation and says, "Mommy, he shouldn't have done that." A little kid knows more about right from wrong than a 60 something year old man..

My dog never comes of leash unless its a daseignated area. I had this idiot of a lady at the Downs Park Dog beach.... She thought it was a good idea to bring a sack of Subway subs directly on the beach and sit there and have her kids eat ... If you've been there, it's a very small area and even with just 5-6 dogs, it's chaotic... Add a bunch of rug rats ... and HUMAN FOOD! I wouldn't feel bad if she had got bitten...

I remember years ago I was at this old park near Carson with my cousin, next thing I see a pit bull charge across the field and clear out the basketball court. To this day I've never witnesses speed like that.
