Former Dallas Cowboy Marcus Spears agrees to a 2 year, $3.55 million deal

Long as we have the cap room, im fine with picking him up. Also it looks like the FO plan for the D is to find players that can help stop the run.

I like the signing. Quality depth and someone to help stop the run, but still no NT.

I don't like Haloti in the middle as NT. He would be great, no doubt, but at what cost. The last 2 years, he's been hampered by injuries and playing NT would be recipe for disaster, health wise. If he's gone we're screwed

It's a low cost signing which means if some kid outplays him in TC, he could be cut. So anyway you slice it, it's still a positive.

If you want to find Marcus Spear's stat sheet, look at Demarcus Ware's stat sheet. If you want to find Marcus Spear's highlight, look at DeMarcus Ware's highlight tape last year and look at the player playing in front of him:

I'm fine with Ngata at NT. At the very least, at least we'll have an extremely solid defensive line next year. Very much depth in a 3-4, or in a 4-3. That will hopefully mean we rotate guys often and have fresh legs out there against the run or pass.

I figured it out as soon as I posted. You're just refreshing and quoting too fast, lol.

It's a decent signing. He isn't much of a pass rusher, but is pretty good in run defense. It gives the team a decent backup and provides some veteran experience in the locker room, after the losses in free agency recently. Not a sexy pick, but very solid. For that price anyway.

Ravens sign DE/DT Marcus Spears (2 years, $3.5 million): C+ Grade
The Ravens had to find some more defensive line depth, so they signed Marcus Spears, who was released by the Cowboys recently. Spears didn't play very well in 2012. He was only average in terms of stuffing the run all while offering zero pass-rush ability. He's clearly a declining player at age 30, but Baltimore didn't spend much to get him.

Ravens sign DE/DT Chris Canty (3 years, $8 million): B+ Grade
The Ravens signed the other former Cowboy defensive lineman a couple of days prior to getting Marcus Spears. I like this move a lot more. Canty offers much better pass-rushing ability than Spears, who is just a run-stuffer. Canty had a down 2012 campaign because of a nagging knee injury, so he can bounce back if he's healthy this upcoming season. The concern is that Canty could be in severe decline, given that he'll turn 31 in November. The risk is worth it, however, considering the cheap price.

I hope Ozzie made the right decision considering that Marcus Spears had a down year last year, but not as bad as Cody or Kemoeatu.

However, there's some good free agents around that could've been better choices, but their contract demand is not known.

Alan Branch
Vance Walker
Aubrayo Franklin
Justin Bannan

These guys were rated positively according to PFF.

Good Christian kid. Looks like a good player. Again with the injury bug, but maybe it won't hit him in Baltimore. Like the signing. :)

Guess we plan on stopping the run this year huh?

be a nice change of pace, won't it?

Yeah, maybe our LBs looked so bad because our DL couldn't hold up their spot.
[/quote]
Yeah, there's a reason old Ray got all those tackles - 7,8,9 yards past the line of scrimmage.

Our Dline rotation is going to be damn good and our dline is actually a point of strength right now after 2 cheap signings. Good signing here by Ozzie. Another big body who can stuff the run and work in a rotation with the young guys. Between Canty, Ngata, Spears, McPhee and Jones we have a solid front to hide the inevitable inexperience of our ILBs.

Being a Cowboys fan also, Spears never lived up to his expectations being taken in the first round and Canty was way better than him playing for the Cowboys. Hopefully, with a change of scenery we could get a little more from him. Good pick up for depth I guess.

Spears is decent depth for cheap, but I think we're focusing a little too much on the 5 tech right now. Our linebacking corps is decimated, I'd feel a lot more comfortable if we had Dansby or Harrison on a good deal.

Canty provides good pass rush from the interior d-line, and Spears helps stop the run. We have definitely improved on the defensive line.

I'd like to see Aubrayo Franklin compete with Terrence Cody at NT. Aubrayo always had very good technique to not get moved around and find the football.
