Former Dallas Cowboy Marcus Spears agrees to a 2 year, $3.55 million deal

We now being linked to him via AW and the Baltimore sun. More a run stopper type than an interior pass rush. Almost 300 lbs, would improve our rotation yet again if we got him.

It looks like our focus is to improve the Dline to help our linebackers, instead of trying to upgrade the LB position which would be much more costly. I like any move we make that can help stop the run, I felt sick watching some of our games last year where we looked helpless.

I think he'd be a solid addition to our club. He may not be great, but he's got talent. He was a 1st round pick and managed to stick in Dallas for 7 years. If he didn't have talent, they would have cut him much sooner

It would virtually complete the dline, if they move ngata inside.

Jones ngata McPhee
Canty Cody spears
Tyson etc

McPhee Cody Spears

Oh I thought he played some NT, anyways we really need to fix our NT position. Would solidify our D line and instantly upgrade our D

We really need a NT, did anyone sign Pouha?
It is a little odd that were looking at so many dline FAs when there are so many available in the draft. I would think other areas would be more of a concern in free agency, but I wouldn't be opposed, as long as he comes cheap...

Most of these guys are stop gaps for our rookies to learn under, don't get wrong they are productive but as soon as our rookies are ready they get released. Can't expect rookies to just come in and dominate

This signing would help too in the fact that we wouldn't feel pressured to reach up or down for a D-Lineman. Spears is solid against the run so he'll help on early downs.

I'm not sure he'd be a good signing. He struggled mightily last year due to chronic back issues and with him being 34, I don't if he'll ever be effective again.

Marcus spears could be a nice stopgap, but we have to see what type of money he gets. I believe he will get less than Canty, and play as a depth player. We would have a deep 5-tech depth, but I assume we move some of our 5 techs to man the nose tackles. Arthur Jones and DeAngelo Tyson could be the odd fits for NT, since at this point, it's hard to trust Cody until he shows improvement. I like that our team is looking for DL help because our DL last year was like a sieve. Also, the rotational depth should help Ngata's snap to keep him fresher and prevent any lingering injuries. I would have a 100% Ngata playing 30 snaps than a 70% Ngata playing 50 snaps.

Spears is only 30 not 34.....Which in the NFL is a huge gap in age...lol.

Vet minimum? If we are going to stick to a 3-4, we need a better option than Cody at NT. I'm worried we use another high draft pick on a NT which will infuriate me. That or have Ngata play more Nose.

I had forgotten the vet minimum was so cheap. I guess it couldn't hurt. An upgrade on Cody is definitely needed. Fully agreed that using yet another high draft pick on a NT would suck. I think there's a strong probability we see Haloti playing more NT this year, especially after the Canty signing and the interest in Spears.
