Putting the Numbers Together

10 posts in this topic

You know, until you put the numbers together, you really don't see how insane it all really is. I look at this and I'm even more confident that the Ravens are doing the exact right thing and we're moving in the right direction.

Check this ... I did this for a post somewhere else to explain why "keeping the band together" was NEVER an option. What would it cost to the cap to have kept the "big names" we lost just for 2013 with the understanding that they sign here for exactly what they signed elsewhere:

Ellerbe : $2.425mil
Kruger: $8.185mil
Boldin: $6mil
Pollard: $3.25mil
Williams: $6mil (haven't seen the structure so just putting in his $6mil/year)
Reed: $6mil (again, no real data but he wants $6mil so just plugging that in for now)

That's $31.86million against the cap alone. Don't forget we still have $2mil tenders out to Pitta and Jones ... $35.86mil .... McKinnie is still out there. He was $3.25mil last year I believe ...

So you're over $38mil against the cap, or sitting here today with $26million over the cap and you still have the draft coming up and about 10 other FAs to deal with.

Good job, we all know with the hard cap, signing all your free agents is impossible, unless most of your rosters makes under $2 million each like a Seattle.

Anyways, Ozzie knows all our free agents were overpaid, so we don't have to worry about being tied down by their contract. We might have to worry about if our young talents can fill in their spots.

Ellerbe makes 2.425M?
[/quote]

They structured his contract so it's $2.425million in 2013. They set his base from 2013-2017 as $1mil, $6mil, $8.4mil, $6.4mil, $6mil (respectively) with another $1.5mil or so each year added on for his bonus.

Can't believe the guaranteed his base salaries.

Boldin's cap his this year was to be $7.5 million not $6.

That said, it was never in the plan to keep Cary or Kruger, so scratch them.

So really it's Boldin (7.5), Ellerbe (2.425), Pollard (3.25) and Reed(~$6). That puts it at $19.175 million to have signed or not released those players. Still too much. Ellerbe's cap hit in 2014 with his new contract is 7.4million, which would also be impossible to have given our situation next year. Basically there's no way we could have matched Miami's offer since they are overpaying him so much.

Yea, but then again the Dolphins are so far under the salary cap it's obscene. Even -now- they are about $33million under. They still have a lot of pieces to deal with but man that's just ridiculous.

Yup ... everyone they took from us is overpaid. Good for them, take care of their families.

That extra $1.5million was dead money applied to Ravens and was accounted for in the $12mil we had under the cap. In San Fran, his number is $6mil for 2013. So, the full $7.5mil is there, just in two different categories.
