Haloti Ngata at NT

30 posts in this topic

With all hell seemingly breaking loose around us, let's talk about something positive. How do you like Ngata at NT now that Canty here?

Me(possibly with the homer shades on) I think our Dline just got so much better. Is there a center in the NFL that can stop him when he gets going?

I like Ngata where he is, find anyone and i mean anyone to replace Cody and Ngata will be the Pro Bowler he was. Ngata is taking a pounding since they can double up on him since Cody is usually on his back. Get a solid replacement for Cody and watch Ngata flourish. Mnt. Cody is a waste and we keep him and let go of Pollard.

Although Ngata at NT would be a sight i would love to see. The guy is a beast. Can you imagine. Great post friend.

Only if Cody developed into that space eating NT, then we could've made that total eclipse of the Sun. Any player in the draft can be a bust or a boom. At least Cody got one more season to salvage his career.

I'm sure there will be some rotational sets of the 3-4 with Canty at LDE, Pernell McPhee at RDE and Ngata at Nose Tackle. I'd like to see how successful that is, sure. I hope we don't draft a nosetackle.

I'll tell you why.

I still believe in Terrence Cody. This is his last shot. His contract year. His make or break off-season. Ozzie took a shot at him, and hopefully improving the interior of our defense will mean bringing in a nose tackle like Jean-Francois to compete. And hopefully, Terrence Cody will blossom into the force he was supposed to be.

We saw the same thing happen with Ellerbe and Kruger. A few others too. Final year of rookie contract, someone who was presumed a bust explodes.

Can someone please get Terrence Cody on the bench press and doing flys, ripping that chest to shreds and failure 4 days a week?

Waste of his talent. You don't put one of the best Defensive Ends into a position which he would perform worse. I'd rather take a guy off of FA and put him there than move Ngata.

Not necesarily. You can still move him around much like the Patriots do Wilfork. Wilfork is a huge talent that has spent alot of his career at the NT position and in recent years Belichick has started moving him around. I don't think it's out of the question for Ngata to see some time at NT. I'd experiment with if I was Pees. It would save an immediate draft pick this year on a NT.

Does anyone have a link or someplace where I can see Ngata will be moved to NT?

There ain't one.

You still need two guys who can hold their ground against double blocks, moving Ngata to NT just means our DE's get blown off the ball.

Personally I just see it as a waste of his talent and movement skills, maybe when he's 32 and slowing down you move him to NT.

Since you have Haloti in your name I'll ask you, do you think he's moved? Though he plays there sometimes it doesn't make sense scheme wise to me to do it. Seems smarter to just draft or acquire a NT and let goes rotate.

That's completely stupid. Offense intended. You're saying if someone like Star Lotulelei, Sharrif Floyd (yeah, right), Brandon Williams, etc. are there at incredible value you don't take them in lieu of Cody? That's horrendously stupid and I can't believe that's what you're suggesting. I think you meant to say "not draft a NT high". That's the only thing that makes sense here. You're far too sensible and seem far more intelligent than that.

But, I agree with not taking a NT high if you mean that. Like last year, we have a tendency to wait until late to get players in which a class is considered "deep". We did this in 2012, taking Tommy Streeter in the 6th when many clamored for him sooner. We did this in 2010, when we snatched up Arthur Jones. I don't think it's intentional. I think what happens is the board just so happens to cause players rated higher at other positions to be there as teams raid a certain position group.

I want a MLB early. I want Arthur Brown. I'm sure you already know that, though. Lol.

LOL, if Star or Floyd are there at #32 or even hell in any range where we could trade up at value [there's a value system for draft picks] then I would absolutely say get them. These are the only two prospects though. Basically, I'm saying I don't want us to draft a NT high, like Kawann Short at #32 for instance. I think there's a possibility of that, and that's what I don't want.

But, no, we absolutely will have a NT high on our board that could go in rounds 3-7, and this guy could easily start his rookie year or maybe get beaten by Cody who has a stellar year and goes to greener pastures, or maybe Cody gets cut/not resigned and we start somebody in 2014 that we drafted in 2013 and pushed in the rotation.

Kyle Williams [of Buffalo[ would be my preferred NT. Williams played like a Raven at LSU "Williams’ biggest strength is just the intensity he plays with on the field. He will never be outworked and goes full tilt until the whistle blows." He was drafted I believe in the 5th round of the 2006 draft. If we can find someone like Kyle Williams, I'd be greatly appreciative. "Kyle is not a great natural athlete. He won’t beat players with raw physical ability. Without that standout athleticism, he may lack the pure size to be a consistent all around threat like he was at LSU." source: http://www.footballs...e_williams.html

This draft is deep. You can't make any promises when you draft BPA, but I highly doubt we leave the 2013 draft without a classic nose guard. Hopefully we get a high effort, high intensity guy that never gets outworked and with some burst like Kyle Williams. After a standout 2010 where he 5.5 sacks from 3-4 NT and PFF's DPOY, and an injury in 2011, he came back 2012 to have 5 sacks from the 4-3 NG position.

Oddly enough, Sylvester Williams reminds me a lot of Kyle Williams. Except Sylvester is more athletic. Syl is taller, a bit bigger but still understized just like Kyle Williams. Has a good burst, plays at a good pad level and is strong with an intense motor.

I think Ngata should continue to move around everywhere on our line, not just keep him at one spot all the time. Have him play at NT/DT on running downs and on 3rd and short.

I'd like for him to be used more in the middle next year , but I'd also like us to still draft/sign somebody else to play there this offseason. Cody should be the backups backup.

I think we'll use a rotation of Ngata, Canty, Jones & (?) at NT this season.

Canty and Jones are not nose tackles and would not fare well in that position. Last year the only people on the roster capable of playing NT in a 3-4 or a 4-3 were Haloti, Cody and Kemo-eat-you.

Also, it's not that surprising, but probably a definite let-down, that Cody got beat for his starting job by Maake Kemoeatu. Kemo is built like a brick Tongan house and has a similar build to Ngata [they even made their facial hair similar to act like twins]. Kemo has learned a LOT from being a nine year vet going into last season, playing with 3 different teams. Cody was trying to cut weight so he could move around healthier and basically Kemo should have beat Cody for the job.

I think sometimes I hate that we sign veterans like Kemoeatu and Lee Evans and make them compete with our rookies, beat them for practice reps and then basically stunt the growth of our rookies. That's just my philosophy, and I'm glad Harbaugh split up vets and rookies so everyone gets more practice reps....

..but I seriously have had a problem with it at WR for the longest time. We'd have this great deep pool of promising WRs who'd never see the field with Cameron's 2 WR sets. Meanwhile young guys all over the league are making plays because they have opportunities.

One of the things I want this team to change is to give more opportunities to young guys.

Cody has no redeeming qualities as a football player, he's severely lacking in strength, anchor, speed, quickness and lateral agility.

He's a nice guy though.

I want to spend a 7th or 6th on this guy, Brent Russell. Apparently him and his defense did what a lot of offenses couldn't: he spearheaded the attack against the Alabama O-Line and Eddie Lacey.

There's been suppositions made on these boards saying that is where we are headed, but I don't see it. IMO it would be a waste of talent. I think we'll find a good NT and that will alleviate the double teams Haloti saw last year.
