Miami Dolphins

Have the Dolphins -not- overpayed someone so far? Man, these guys opened the bank door and are tossing cash out like it's free. Just saw they now picked up Wheeler from the Raiders. $13million for Wallace, $7million for Ellerbe .. be interested to see what they paid Wheeler.

These moves don't pan out for them, they are gonna be screwed for the next half decade or so.

I'm actually half rooting for them. It's about dang time that the Patriots face some competition in their own division.

I don't like the moves they are making.

I still think they should pursue another WR or TE in either FA or the draft. They really don't have that many needs for a 7-9 team. They just need to give Tannehill some weapons. Wallace is a good start.

Well, the Miami Dolphins had A LOT of cap space to work with. But, just like what we've seen with the Philadelphia Eagles, recently, spending top dollar for a bunch of free agents, all-at-once, does NOT work. What the Dolphins already had, and what Miami has just acquired, doesn't make them that much better. I mean, really? Mike Wallace? Plus, I don't know who Philip Wheeler even is; just Wiki'ing his name resulted in a bare-bones page. And, I still think the Fins overpaid Brian Hartline just so he would not end-up like Wes Welker, where he dominates in a better offensive system.

But, either way, the Dolphins are just going to trade all these players to the Toronto.. err, I mean, Buffalo Bills in about a year-or-two. After all, isn't that what mediocre teams from Miami do, now? :P

Maybe if the Patriots didn't have 3 doormats to their mansion in the AFC East we'd finally have a home playoff game.

Miami is going to fall flat on its face, they overpaid guys who are so not worth the money. And they're still handicapped by Tannehill. You're kidding yourself if you don't think the Pats are going to dominate that division again.

They're also paying their 1st year cap low. I think Ireland is preparing for a one time all-in gamble to sell the Dolphins as a legit team to their fanbase before he gets fired. With all those backloaded contract, it's going to be ugly in couple years from now.

I know right. Maybe the Patriots keep making their playoffs because they're division opponents are so inept in their spending and drafting. It's basically the Patriots and a three way tie for 4th place.

So according to that article, there is a good chance that what everyone is saying on here will be true. They will all be cap related releases, and maybe as soon next off-season. Ellerbe signed a $35 million deal but essentially left us to get paid $2.425 and essentially risk being cut due to his salary after just one season. His salary jumps to $7.425 million in 2014, and Wallace will be cut because they won't pay him $17M in 2014.

Did the Dolphins think that they had a legit shot at winning the Super Bowl this year?

Same here! Was having lunch at work last night with a Dolphins fan. He was asking us what we knew about this guy Wheeler. Every one of us said the same thing, Who the hell is that?

I was running numbers for something on the Ravens salary cap and then saw this. THIS IS CRAZY. The Dolphins better pray this team gels fast. Just take these 5 players: Ellerbe, Wallace, Hartline, Moore and Wheeler.

In 2013, they structured the contracts so they only count as $12.725mil against the cap. In 2014, those same 5 guys will account for $43.275mil against the cap.

And that doesn't even take into account that 9 of their top 12 current cap hits for 2013 are going to be Unrestricted Free Agents in 2014.

Wow.

Maybe they overspent ridiculously, but I still wish them the very best luck. I just want to see the Pats finally have some kind of competition in the AFC East.

The Dolphins will be a decent team next season (left tackle pending). Ellerbe may be injury prone but is a solid player. Mike Wallace gives Tannehill a legitimate weapon in the passing game and opens things up in the running game and for Hartline. Keller was a great signing and will give Tannehill a security blanket. Wheeler is also solid.

Did they overspend? Yes of course, but this core when combined with their draft should create a very solid team.

Do I like what they did? No I would have made some different acquisitions, but the Dolphins strategy was to clearly fill as many holes (Irrelevant get in here. I'm making this too easy for you.) as possible through FA. I would have done it in a more strategic manner, but they accomplished their goal. Now they just have to hope the draft pans out the way they expect and we could be looking at a competitive team in 2013
