DE Chris Canty agrees to 3 year, $8 million deal

I was surprised the Giants cut him. Usually we don't make early moves in free agency but Ozzie must've known he couldn't pass this up. Canty would be a great situational player. I still don't think he'll be our biggest signing of the offseason.

But that's what Ozzie does. He signs role players that do just enough to win.

I know.......that's why I said

It was a typical Oz signing,

So?? You honestly think a 30-year old player with a career high of 4 sacks is going to suddenly rack up 10+? He's definitely an upgrade as a run defender, he can get after the QB and his presence should benefit the other players, but he's not going to have a statistical explosion.
Once again, yes I know this.

Look guys I wasn't bashing, I was merely commenting that some of the posts were acting like we'd signed JPP and Megatron. We didn't, we did a usual Oz move which is to sign a 30 something stop gap player..nothing to get all hot and bothered over.

I'd be surprised if he's a situational player only. You generally don't sign guys the first day of FA to be situational. He's a 3 down guy you slide inside in the nickel to DT to me.

I'd consider Redding a great pickup for the 2 years he was with us. The Canty signing is much in the same vein as the Redding acquisition. If Canty has a Redding like impact I'd consider it a great signing.
Well sure if he has a Redding like impact than I'll come back to the thread and edit my post. Fair enough?

So why do you think he won't? Hes much in the same mold as Redding.

The same reason I was skeptical of the Redding signing - who knows? Unfortunately for me, I'm a glass half empty kinda guy. I like results and I usually err on the side of caution with FAs, espeically ones that seem to mirror our own castoffs. Guys we ran dry and were good for us hit the 30 or so mark and we let 'em walk to go to other teams. Sometimes they work out, sometimes they don't. It really isn't what I think about Canty but merely my own commentary on how, I dunno...how BOUNCY everyone is about it. Were we this excited when Cory was signed?

Nothing to be slobbering about would probably be more precise. Usual signing, what's next is my mindset.

You act like 30 is ancient. He was the only dude making plays on our line when they played us this year. I think he'll benefit from the system and make an excellent contribution. I also don't believe Kruger will have a repeat performance next season and will crack double digit sacks. That's just my gut feeling on the matter.
I never claimed he's ancient but what interior pass rushers do you know have their statistical breakout at that age? I saw him making plays but they were in the run game. He's not J.J. Watt or Muhammad Wilkerson.

Agreed on Kruger.

I don't think legacy meant to say Canty was going to come in and be a dominant pass rusher. But the impact he will have on the interior line will make Suggs/Upshaw and the DE's more effective

Fair enough. And no I dont recall the excitement with Redding, so you're likely right the excitement coincides with the timing.
Exactly. His presence will raise the play of the entire front 7.
I could see Canty have a good 4-6 sack season for us if the stars align for him. He could make an impact like Trevor Pryce did back in the day. But the real reason I made that statement is that I have zero faith in Kruger living up to the contract he signed today. If Canty got 5 sacks and Kruger gets 4 then Canty got more (that's more what I was getting at). I see Kruger failing more so than Canty having an All Pro season.

Canty wasnt a castoff. He signed a 6 yr 42 million contract with the giants. He was making more money than ellerbe just got. He isnt worth 7 million a year and he was hurt last year and they cut him. He is actually a very good value signing and improves our DL which struggled a lot last year.

We still need another WR, a LT and 2 ILBs. I hope we sign reed and find one cheap ILB and go into the draft with LT and one ILB as the needs. I also wonder what ozzie does at WR because we seem to be lacking unless doss actually lives up to his potential

Since Canty was cut by the Giants, doesn't that mean he won't count against our comp pick selections next year - if we don't do something crazy in FA, Kruger and Ellerby should net us some nice ones.

Yes, this is correct. He will not count against our comps.

I would like us to get Harrison as well. Perhaps we can get him for less than I thought.

Harrison, E. Reed & Canty would make a great FA. Throw in Dansby and that's an awesome FA.

Kruger is borderline 3rd round pick. Borderline. If he goes to the Pro Bowl or the Browns make the playoffs, the Dolphins & Titans don't & Wallace & Levitre don't go to the PB, then Kruger will be a 3rd as long as no other FAs sign more than him (unlikely with Long, Jennings, Talib, Williams, etc. still available).

Didn't know much about Canty so just googled him...wikipedia already has him listed as a Raven. lol That didn't take long! Just think that's funny.

...Just went back and googled Boldin...they've got him as a 49er. Just think that's sad. :(

Chris Canty is probably our biggest signing of FA.

However, I surprised there's a lot of quality free agents left.

There's a reason why Boldin's 6 million cap was important since you can sign three quality guys for it.

Ellerbe and Kruger went for big money, but we can find solid replacement for them.

This Free Agency is deeper and better than last year since we have more cap relief from Flacco's big contract. Veterans who aren't signed this week will think long and hard to join and enjoy playing with a class organization like the Ravens.

Actually, I think I heard somewhere that we can't use his 6 mil in cap until he's passed his physical (after his OxFam trip). So we might have to hold off on some more FA signings until he's back and takes that physical.

Well everyone, this signing again shows why we have a perennial contender.. A solid player at a reasonable cost.
All these fans of little faith in the off season make me laugh.
