DE Chris Canty agrees to 3 year, $8 million deal

Canty ngata jones. Then add depth to go along with McPhee in the later rounds off the draft. I bet we sign a veteran MLB like dj Williams for example just to plug up holes

Love this signing, Absolutely a position where we needed some veteran strength and size.
Finally some good news.

I'm so curious how our front 3 (or 4) will look like. Can Art play NT or will we put Haloti at NT permanently? or are we going to a 4-3? Soooo many questions!
The Ravens love to switch up. In a 3-4, putting Haloti at NT with Jones and Canty is downright scary! Especially with guys like McPhee, Tyson, and Hall potentially growing and in rotation.

They need to beef up the DL, especially interior linemen (NT)

edit - Canty was a top 3-4 DE in Dallas and was fairly good as a DT in New Yorks' 4-3 scheme. The big thing holding him back was injuries. Plus he wasn't living up to his 6-yr $42M deal, maybe because he was playing out of position?

Love the signing. Anybody know how much?

This indirectly helps the linebacker situation. First, we improved the defensive line situation so we can focus on linebacker first in the draft. Second, good defensive line play almost always makes linebackers look better than they are. You can get by with average linebackers as long as the defensive line plays at a high level and keeps pressure off the backers.

Chris Canty gets $8M over 3 years, with $2.8M guarantee in Baltimore.

That's what we call right player, right price. Great signing.

GREAT contract! Canty still played at a high level last year and he's going to love playing next to Ngata. Hopefully he's well recovered from his injury before camp starts.

He talks about the Superbowl and gives the Ravens some nice praise in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3BED9HJVgXw

Ravens agreed to terms with DT Chris Canty, formerly of the Giants, to a three-year, $8 million contract with $2.8 million guaranteed.[/background][/background][background=transparent]
Canty broke the news on his Twitter account. The former Giant also drew interest from the Packers, Titans, and Jaguars. Canty tallied just 26 tackles and three sacks in nine games last season, but should be a solid fit as a five-technique tackle along the Ravens' 3-4 line. He'll help stop the run for a team remaking its linebacker corps. The Ravens figure to start Canty and Arthur Jones on the ends, with Haloti Ngata quite possibly taking over as a full-time nose tackle.[/background]

Can Canty play Nose Tackle?
I'd be surprised if he's never lined up there at least a few times in his career (specifically when he was in Dallas), but he's at his best as a three-technique.

That is not a bad price, kudos to the FO on that one.
also have Tyson as well, then draft a player maybe in the fifth round. If we also get a vet MLB and either a left tackle or safety, even if it is McKinnie and reed. That really narrows down our immediate needs to a wide out, a MLB beside said vet, and then a left tackle and safety to groom behind the aforementioned vets.

This is what the Ravens do. Leave the flash for the other teams ... and yet, year in and year out we're playoff contenders. I don't understand where the mistrust and doubt of our FO comes from. Are we that spoiled?

Hmm, Ngata to NT? I don't mind the idea at all. I was against it because I prefer Ngata at DE due to wear and tear, but perhaps having Canty & Jones as bookends Ngata will be able to hold up and not get too injured in the middle. I like this regardless, and would be fine. I wonder where Canty plays? RDE or LDE? Hmm..

I'd just like to say: Other teams are celebrating BIG NAME signings like Wallace and we're stoked about signing a DE that was under the radar until today. I'm stoked about the signing but it's just funny how we view a free agency victory versus teams that don't have a record of winning games. Our team has a great track record of finding quality guys at great value. Canty will contribute and I feel great about this signing.

It's just interesting.

Can Ngata play NT in a 3-4 Defense?

I think it's because, for the most part, we pay attention a bit more. The whole winning thing helps too. You can tell by the way the react to the signings that all they know is a name and, from the Ravens, for the most part what they saw in the playoffs/Superbowl this year.

For me, I hear the name Chris Canty, I go do some research then look at his price tag and what he can bring ..... sweet pickup by the Oz for minimal cost and minimal risk. Love it. I love that Browns fans think Kruger is a one man sack machine while Dolphins fans are convinced Ellerbe is Ray Lewis incarnate. Well .. you paid those guys like they were all that, I know that much.

I think he can honestly. I'm more worried about how he will hold up there and less about how he will play there. I feel like he can play that position very well. I'm just concerned about injuries with him at NT. We will see, though.

The Ravens are thinking... hey.. our LBs may not be great up the middle, but go ahead and TRY to run against our big boys up front.

Cody.... I feel bad for you. Seems Ngata is going back inside and Art/Canty/McPhee will be the ends.

We could still draft a NT @ 1st round

Canty can be a role-player. Rotating between Ngata/Jones.

Very true. I don't think this means we won't take a NT. I think it means we could wait and not reach, which is exactly what we like to do.
