I am wondering: Did Flacco's salary put even a bigger squeeze on signing vets like Boldin?

At $6.8 million cap hit? Nope!

This year no, future seasons most definately.

On another note why should a proven vet who does it all like Boldin take a hit when the quarterback just got overpaid? As much as I hate the fact that Boldin is no longer here I'm glad he didn't buckle to the Ravens front office. Why should he , when the quarterback didn't?

Yeah, I don't blame Boldin at all. Being proven, was proof positive to refuse a pay cut.

Not this year, I don't see it being an issue in the future. Suggs and Ngata will be off the books in a few years, they're affecting us more than Flacco IMO.

I'm disappointed that BAL only got 1 pick for him. Newsome could've milked SF for a little more.

We were going to cut him. Getting any picks at all was a good job, the 49ers probably didn't want to have to bid on him in FA so they gave one of their many draft picks away

That's what I'm saying. BAL should've been able to snag 2 draft picks.

Soooo with everybody leaving we didn't have to trade Q after all.......

It wasn't about Ellerbe it was about one year of Q vs being able to sign a player long term

If he could have, he would have. You know how Ozzie works!

With what leverage? They were going to cut him. The 49ers know this.... the Vikings knew this. That's why they only offered a 6th and 7th round pick respectively. To get anything for a guy you're about to cut, who only has 1 year left on his contract ... that did really well to get that much.

No, Boldin was already under contract next year, and Flacco's cap hit is lower next year than it was this year. Going forward Flacco's increased cap hits will have an effect, but it significantly helped us for next year's cap specifically. The short answer is I think the front office viewed Boldin as a player who was making a lot of money and not producing the way they expected - the playoffs were great, but 3 straight seasons without 1000 yards after being a 1000 yard receiver in 4 of 5 seasons as the secondary guy, and then you can't hit 1000 as the number 1? I think that had more to do with it, that and the fact that the front office was probably trying to prioritize signing young players like Ellerbe and Kruger over a 33 year old wide receiver.

Just stop. He was getting cut. It was almost as if this was a deal between John and Jim.

The coaches don't make business decisions, but I get the point. Just saying that Boldin still has value.

Of course he does......as a trade for a 6th round pick. I wish it wasnt so, but hey.

Pretty sure he means "next year" as in this upcoming season and "this year" as in this past SB season.

Yup, still hate this move! HATE it!

I hate it as well. I really thought we'd work something out with Boldin. Fact is though, with Boldin's cap savings added in we're only $5.5 mil under the cap after we tendered our RFAs and the David Reed signing. There was no money to take Boldin's $7.5 mil cap hit. I have a feeling (if Boldin can be believed and knew nothing of anything going on) that his agent played everyone and forced the FO's hand.

The FO gave Boldin the contract. I cannot see how anyone can have the agent share the blame.

Really? Let's see...it's the agent's job to keep their client informed of everything going on. Boldin claimed he was not aware of any request for him to take a pay cut. Clearly, it was a request the Ravens made. Boldin was "shocked" by the trade. You think his agent wasn't aware of anything going down? Either Boldin is lying or his agent kept him out of the loop entirely.

With the Boldin move, did the front office hurt its credibility and chance of receiving future hometown discounts?

Did the Boldin move influence Ellerbe's decision to bail? All teams can void contracts by cutting players but many will not do so to a player that lives up to expectations. It just seems that Harbs hard work of building trust as a family has been directed to take a left turn off the main road by the front office.

I did not see or here that.

yeah that Anquan move is looking great now, isn't it?

Ozzie is the best GM in the league I won't deny that, but this was a mistake.

Now Jameel has to get healthy. Also if we don't resign Ed Reed I'm gonna lose it.

I hope Boldin bombs his physical on purpose so the trade is null in void, but it won't happen the man has too much integrity. We are really going to miss the veteran leadership we've lost.

Flacco's cap next year is 14mil....

2013 cap hit for Flacco is 6.8 million. 2013 was also the last year of Boldin's deal. That's next year. Barring an extension, Boldin would have been gone anyway. 14 million is 2014.
