Anquan Boldin Traded to the San Francisco 49ers

1,400 posts in this topic

To a 7.5 mill cap hit? Not a chance. Boldin is great, but he doesn't deserve the third largest cap hit on the team. If he won't take a pay cut, then the FO doesn't really have much choice.

How can anyone say he doesn't deserve it? The FO are the ones who gave it to him. His intensity helped carry the Ravens though out the playoffs and Ray Rice's made 4th and 29 success was partly due to Boldin's block. This is a big mistake by the FO, if true.

Boldin saying he'd retire as stated in at least newspaper article was that the retirement talk was to gauge the Teams honor.....their legiance or something like that to keep him a raven.

Boldin deserves that money. It is up to the FO to decide whether or not we can afford to pay him the money that he deserves.

I love Boldin for his toughness but this is absolutely correct. Boldin gets no separation at all from defenders. Joe just trusts him enough to fight for the ball that he is willing to throw into those situations. I know we can live without Boldin. I know it seems like a slap in the face, but no more a slap in the face as it was to Heap & Mason, both balled out for this team, but we cut them because we had the youngblood coming up and we needed cap room. I hope Boldin doesn't take this personal. Selfishly, I also hope he's a man of his word and retires if they can't work something out.

The FO will do what they do. No one individual player is more important than the team but I think they will find a way to satisfy Boldin without releasing him to the market.

From your source

"The Pittsburgh Steelers announced Saturday that they released linebacker James Harrison, while Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Anquan Boldin might become a free agent after all."

You're trying to hard.

Excuse me? The title was quoted. I didn't make that up. Don't be a fool. Read the comments even. You're not trying hard enough.

Someone noticed the big error, most likely after the comments of it and changed it. This was the original that was written:

Headline: "Ravens cut Harrison, Boldin may leave Ravens"

First Sentence: "Two of the most biggest names in the NFC North division are either gone or on their way out."

He wasn't making it up. Also I find it funnier that while they changed the title and the sentence, they forgot to change the url. It still says this... ravens-cut-harrison.

I guess it's just the media who wanted to write up a report and quickly did it without confirming it.

yeah, where have we seen this before? Anybody want to buy some deer antler spray?

No wonder Q refused to comment on the "news", which is nothing but rampant speculation.

The fact that both sides backed off from cutting ties late Fri is heartening. Yeah, we have to replace Boldin eventually, and no, you can't pay forward for previous performance, but nobody plays with more heart and dedication than Q.

I just don't know if the youngsters are ready yet. I think another year of Q's influence could pay off immeasurably down the line. I, for one, hope the FO sees this.

What this is really about, and the fans who also watched every game and poured over every off-season news report back in the late 90s and especially the 00-01 offseason will get it, is not mortgaging the future for the present. Anquan Boldin is our present. Presently, he's a fantastic wide receiver, worthy of all praise he's gotten and a complete leader. However, in Baltimore we believe in "next man up." This means Tandon Doss. it means LaQuan Williams. it means David Reed. One of these three guys will earn the starting spot next to Torrey Smith.

i hate to see Anquan go as much as the next guy, which is why i hope he takes his paycut. Currently, he's the 2nd most expensive man on our roster behind our only proven pass-rusher: Terrell Suggs. We have 0 leverage with Suggs in a year where we released Kindle and probably can't retain the services of Kruger (nor would we want to at his asking price). At least we know Torrey Smith can come in and be a #1 receiver (meaning he can run all the routes and catch all the balls all over the field and take over games and line up against the other team's #1 CB and still make plays).

Ozzie is a smart guy. The same thing he told Joe (that he'd look at his complete body of work, meaning the regular season too not just that fantastic post-season) applies to Q. Anquan's regular season statistics:

15 games | 65 rec | 921 yards | 4 touchdowns

He should take a paycut. And for no lie of omission's sake, his post-season numbers:

4 games | 22 rec | 380 yards | 4 touchdowns

This whole team turned it on during the post-season, and thus we won the Superbowl. A similar thing happened in 2000. We kept Burnett, Adams, Siragusa and McCrary. The only turn-over in the defense involved Kim Herring, who was replaced by Corey Harris at SS. We kept guys like Shannon Sharpe and Rod Woodson.

The year after that, everyone of those names above walked. in 2002 we were awful and 7-9, and the only starters from 00 by 2002 were:

Ray Lewis

Chris McAlister

Peter Boulware

the other 8 guys went elsewhere or retired.

On offense the only same starters (as if it mattered) were:

Jamal Lewis

Ogden

Flynn

Travis Taylor

We can't have that kind of 2-year turnover. Right now, we'd be looking at losing 4 (Cary, Q, Kruger) starters from 2012 to 2013 if Anquan doesn't take his paycut and leaves. And then by 2014, instead of losing a whole host of starters we'll get to keep the young core as opposed to keeping veterans like we did in the 00-01 offseason.

I think this will be a mistake, mainly due to the fact i dont think we have anyone to plug in his position. I dont think doss is ready to start, let alone be a number one wr. Torrey will most likely have a much better year and he is more of a game changer because of his big play potential, but Q was joe's go to guy, thats who always came through for him in the clutch. you can throw numbers out there all you want but i just dont think you can let him walk, a 7mill cap hit for our number one wr is fine by me, although he may not be a number one on another team....he is on ours.

I generally trust the FO, but this is a HUGE mistake.

For starters, Anquan epitomizes what it means to be a Raven. He absolutely sets the tone for the offense.

Boldin is quite clearly the leader of the receiving core. Who is going to step up and do that? Torrey Smith is not quite ready for that. There is nobody to replace Boldin on this roster, and don't say Doss.

Finally, we just got rid of Cam and FINALLY started to use Boldin correctly!! He was pivotal to our playoff run and played lights out, balls to the wall.

I think the FO is making a huge huge huge huge mistake by not working something out with Anquan.

It's funny. We all say "In Ozzie we trust" and yet when a difficult decision has to be made we all freak out. Everything worked out fine when we cut Mason and Heap in the same off season.

Let's just wait and see how it all plays out.

I guess it will go back to Rice being the safety blanket again. I am going to miss the great sideline catch's he made for us and the way he exemplified the Raven Way of playing. Very few offensive players do. Dickson cannot hold onto a ball, T Smith cannot get of a block to get down field most of the time so i hope Rice Stays healthy.

The front page says they did not even ask him to restructure but that is hard to believe. Makes zero sense to me, drop some of the dead wood that have not contributed even when on the field Anthony Allen, David Reed etc etc.

I used exactly what you quoted in your post. Why would you post the corrected version in a post about mistakes?

My point was that the title may have been wrong in saying that the Ravens released Harrison(though it clearly only makes grammatical sense if a team other than the Ravens was the one releasing Harrison), the content is what matters and that is what's correct (with the exception of the NFC North bit.

Who cares? The title was wrong. It was funny. Relax.

We can agree to disagree if you want. I'm not about to debate something like this. I'm just saying what I have to say and if you respond, I'm leaving it at that. I'd like to not derail this thread. I personally look at titles before content, hence why my eyebrow raised when I saw "Ravens cut Harrison", and I laughed. You didn't write the article, did you? You seem defensive about it, which is why I asked.

Yahoo! has some terrible writers. I find their articles amusing because of that.

Don't think so - he obviously wants to test the market.

As much as I want him to stay - I think he is invaluable, money talks.

I guess we will see this week. I would hate to see him in an opposing uniform...

Bet?

Nope, only Suggs and Ngata. Yanda is just a hair under at $7.3, I think. Flacco is at $6.8.

Oh yeah, that's right. Joe is pretty small this year I guess that does make Q the third highest..

Now Q's saying that the previous reports were bogus and he was not offered a contract. I'm confused. I was shocked when I heard the first reports, seem like a very selfless guy. He's a baller and should definitely stay.

Did anyone not know Q was going to be cut? I'm shocked out how surprised everyone is.

Yes. Yes, quite a few thought/think a restructuring was/is going to be made. Gonna be funny when it does happen and then I come back and read this post ;)

I will mourn if something actually happens. Until then, I cross my fingers and pray that something works out.

i think you're in the same boat as Joe Flacco. in the postseason, Q/Joe/Caldwell really started to gel. it would be a shame to take away the million dollar man's greatest asset, and I'm sure he thinks the same way as all of us do.
