Terrence Cody's offseason

149 posts in this topic

I thought we drafted him to be a boulder, but I guess he couldn't even do that right.

Anyways, it's his last year and he is fighting for a roster spot.

I want him to do better this year but I don't see it happening. If he doesn't prove himself this season or even during the off-season it's likely we'd release him.

2010 draft class was brutal...

It's funny that you say this, because there's a whole topic debating the 2008 draft class. The 2008 and 2010 draft classes are related and interesting because 2008 was a draft class where we really hit at the top, and then no one else beyond round 2 is still with the team.

Meanwhile, in the 2010 draft the first two draft picks seem to be heading out and had a dreadful 2012: Cody lost his starting spot to a veteran, the defense got run on worse than ever, and Kindle was cut from the practice squad. However, here's who else we drafted:

Dennis Pitta

Ed Dickson

David Reed

Arthur Jones

Ramon Harewood

Harewood was a 7th round pick, and for him to still not be cut is really saying something about his value. Arthur Jones was one of the top 10 5th round picks in the last half decade, according to Pro Football Focus. David Reed was a 5th round pick, and came into a WR corps with Mason, Boldin, Housh and Stallworth all on the roster. Next year, it was Torrey, Boldin and Lee Evans. Last year, Torrey, Boldin and Jacoby. This would be the first year - provided we don't draft some stud WR - that he would even have a damn opportunity on this team (or, more rightfully: the first year out of the wr-oppressive 2-WR set offenses of Cam Cameron). Ed Dickson is a tight end who could start on many NFL teams. Dennis Pitta is quickly becoming Joe's favourite target and if price/contract issues work out, could rival Todd Heap's legacy in Baltimore.

It was a very good draft after the first two picks.

It's funny, because I think I just made a case as to why people would rather favour a top-heavy draft.

If anyone remembers my tantrums and how much I hated us drafting Cody, that is how excited and love the Williams pick! This guy is everything we wished Cody could be on the field -- and then some. Brings an extra dimension as a pass rusher, and just like Ngata, despite being bigger than a small car he can play anywhere on the line.

Good times...

This is all I have to say:

...

Night and day difference. Great to have a naturally big like Brandon who's obviously put time in the gym to sculpt himself.

Just cut him loose already.

Most likely he will just be a backup until his contract expires or the team wants their 3 person hot tub back.

If the Ravens switched to a 4-3 built around Terrence Cody, I'd cry myself to sleep for the rest of my life.

good news everyone!

per Ryan Mink

The four-year veteran has been a constant presence at the Under Armour Performance Center with the goal of improving his overall strength after losing so much weight. He is expected to fully recover from offseason hip surgery by training camp, which will help in his quest to earn back his starting position in the final year of his rookie contract.

Best of luck to Cody as he enters a big year. He is certainly putting in the work.

Go get em, Cody. I hope he puts on so many pounds of muscle that if a skinnier man did it everyone would be crying HGH.

Glad to hear it, but only time will tell if we'll actually see an improvement. I hope he pulls it together, but it might be too late. I am rooting for him, but I am not convinced he's working hard enough (yet), and I am not convinced he will be able to save his spot. We have a loaded defensive line right now. If he wants a spot, he's going to need to play up to his potential.

Yeah, to be honest this defensive line is LOADED.

Even if Terrence Cody gets it together this year he might be going off elsewhere after his contract year is over. Or perhaps because it's so loaded he won't get snaps and won't demand much as a FA. Either way, I have a hard time thinking Brandon will get more playing time than Cody. I think they're both situationally strong and might be used in different situations, spelling Ngata, or in a 4-3 next to Ngata. Right now before training camp or anyone proving themselves, the d-line depth chart looks more like:

3-4:

DE: Spears / Jones / Williams

NT: Ngata / Cody / Williams

DE: Canty / McPhee / Upshaw

4-3:

DE: Dumervil / Suggs / McPhee

DT: Spears / Canty / Williams

DT: Ngata / Cody / Williams

DE: Upshaw / Jones

I think Cody will make the roster for quite a few reasons but he's an investment and unless we think he's a complete waste we will keep him around. The problem for us getting rid of him is  we have nobody proven as a NT. Granted, Cody looked very poor last year but he's not complete garbage. Unless we feel like there's nothing to gain from him, I suspect he returns this year as a backup at the very least. Best case scenario is he turns it on like Paul Kruger.

You have Suggs BACKING UP Dumervil and Arthur Jones as a 4-3 DE? What's up with that?

If anyone is a starting 4-3 DE on this team it's Terrell

Not only that, but Upshaw is the polar opposite of what a 4-3 DE is supposed to be. Suggs and Doom would be our starting 4-3 DE

My objection is bolded above.

The difference between Cody and Kruger is that Kruger always undeniably had talent -- he was not used his rookie year much, and misused his second year.

Cody is playing his natural position, and in three years, has shown absolute zero progression -- and considering that, in my opinion at least, he never appeared to be very talented in the first place, I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for him to blow up like Kruger did

I actually think Upshaw could do well as a LE in a 4-3. Though, he lacks the length and burst needed for DE.
