It's funny you mention this. For years I told anybody that would listen, "There's no horses in Indiana! Why keep that name?" LOL!
I KNOW!!!! If anything they should be the Indianapolis Race Cars or something lame like that. The reality is that there is nothing in Indiana to name a sports team after so they had to steal our history and culture.

After college I lived in the Kentuckiana area: Louisville and southern Indiana. One thing I quickly learned is that like Kentucky, Indiana is a basketball state. Furthermore, knowing the politics and the governing style of the KY and IN, believe me if Indiana had to come up with it's own name for NFL franchise it could do so.

I blame my cold on missing this thread earlier, Mod 3 and cobrajet have spoke quite eloquently on how I feel.
I had 12 years of Sundays watching football with my dad and brother taken away from me. I was a kid when the BALTIMORE Colts left so I had an AFC and NFC team mostly to piss said dad off and the other team was the Redskins through their glory years, but it wasn't the same because my dad would curse them. 12 years if being force fed the Broncos-- with Elway, that's another story-- and Raiders * shudder*.
I did not embrace the Ravens right away, my 'baby' was born 6 weeks before they announced we got the team and I was dealing with 3 kids and working fulltime, and frankly I did not want someone else's team. Some friends of my husband got tired of my Redskin love, BTW I did not know JKC blocked expansion with Tagliboob, and took me to my first game and I fell in love, we left that game PSL owners lol I have enjoyed home games with my dad and brother since 1999.
I bought all the 2 weeks of hate and hype in 2007 playoff game and did not like what losing that game did to me or how I acted. I vowed that summer to bury the hate, it truly was not healthy and work on getting BALTIMORE s records in the HOF separated from Indy's. I still get annoyed when Indy claims our HOFers, Johnny U and the Greatest Game Ever Played, but a majority of their fans could care less. Any one else remember the Indianapolis Oriole shirts their fans were sporting?
Baltimore has 3 Superbowl trophies, a Championship before the Superbowl era, a USFL title and a Gray Cup-- pretty damn good if you ask me.
Beating Indy here this past Jan helped, love my Out of Luck T-shirt lol, beating Manning in Denver was nice too.

Those that don't know history are destined to repeat it, so when we have a down year or two, continue to support and love our team, it sucks not to have one. I will die a Ravens fan and bleed purple and have done my part in raising the next generation of Ravens fans!

OP please never tell us to get over it, I know Cleaveland got a way better deal but I would never tell them that either . BTW I read on one of their boards they were claiming this SB along with the 2001 one, but that's another story lol

My dad was a huge Colt fan. Sundays were all about the Colt Game. My dad would wake us kids up early. Mom would have breakfast ready, we would eat, do out work, go to sunday school then come home for the Colt Game. Dad would watch and explain the game to me and my brothers. After tagluabue/irsey robbed this town of the Colts in such a cold callus way, my dad never watched football in the same way, with the same passion. Those sunday family times were lost for good. My father is retired now, will watch the Ravens and talk to me about the games but not with the same zeal that he did when i was a teen. So for this fan that The Baltimore Colts will live on till i die. A friend of mine told me this story a couple of years back. The summer after the Ravens won SB XXXV he went to the bank and was walking inside when a Town car with a Raven bumper sticker parked. The door opened and Artie Donovan got out. My friend stopped and said How bout those Ravens. Artie said without stopping "Yea its great" . As he passed my friend Artie turned his head and said "Should have been a Horseshoe", and keep on walking.

Today in my house it's the same as when i was a kid. We watch and i talk about and explain the game the way i see it to my wife. I here my dad in alot of the things i say. I am a huge Raven Fan who's Monday attiitude depends on the outcome of sundays game. The Ravens are Baltimore's Team now and i love them. But like Artie said "Should be a Horseshoe"

you said that with a straight face ?
I would laugh when saying it and I know there may be a horse or two in Indiana. Point being that the name Colts was based on local culture that included horses and racing. They race cars in Indiana, and play round ball. They should have named them the "Race Cars" or "Basketballs". The name Colts never has, and never will belong in Indy.

This is a sensitive topic to be sure. I think I have told people on this site before, but I moved here in '91 and at the time I just couldn't believe a city as big as Baltimore didn't have a football team. Come to find out the conspiracy at the heart of the Colts moving was just shocking to hear and I have always felt emphathetic about it. I may not have experienced it firsthand but I feel like I did and I saw the after effects from what happened.

So yeah I moved here from close to San Franciso, and I was born in Texas. My parents were military, and when we moved here to relocate to Aberdeen my parents thought it the best place to raise a family. Maryland has some of the best schools, and hosptials in the country and thats no boast.

Well logically I was a 49er and Cowboys fan during the mid 90's, but once we got the Ravens I was hooked. I've grown with the Ravens in so many ways since and now that bond forged by memories of game days tailgating with friends is damn near permanent. The major injustice of the Colts moving? Was keeping the team name, colors, and records. IS there anyway or hope of fixing that? No, likely not, but we can make sure that it doesn't happen anymore in whatever small way we can.

If the Colts move again maybe retire the name an Colors but that would for Indy too. The best we can hope for is the records being seperated in Canton and record books. We are slowly starting to see this with broadcasters, seperating out the BALTIMORE Colts records vs Indy and I do think of that as a win.

to the OP....if...that enormous crowd at the Ravens Superbowl parade marching down the streets and into M&T Bank Stadium doesn't prove to you that the city of Baltimore is in full support of and loves the Ravens....then you really need help brah! lol!

As an older football fan, I must agree that our entire city was dissed by the Irsays and the NFL and will never forgive them both.

Thank god we now have the championship Ravens who inspire deep passion among the Baltimore faithful, but like some of these other guys, I hope the Colts win never anything. Including regular season games.
I think they should always lose.
Every time I see that old horseshoe logo, it makes me crazy, that is what I grew up with running around playing football with all the neighborhood kids.

Of course those days are long gone, but the memories of Memorial Stadium will always be there, and I am so proud and happy to be a Raven fan.

Go Ravens!!!

Its never quite over even with two superbowl rings. I can remember my neighbor, pacing the block. mumbling after the colts left town. Their departure not only affected the fans but also the players. A few years later J. Unitas had to declare bankruptcy, and all the golden arm restaurants disappeared.

Its over now, right? 2 rings for the Baltimore RAVENS...can all the old heads let go of their useless, stubborn pride and stop proclaiming every chance they get how much of a Colts fan they are?
I'm on the Ravens site quite a bit, and I STILL see people saying "oh i'm a colts fan so i dislike the indy mayflowers" , and comments of that ilk.
Really? Has that REALLY been a factor in the last 10 years?
I can understand the loss that not having a football team can create...loss of city pride, community, something to escape into and route for when life is getting you down...or heck, just something to make you a little happier no matter how happy you are already.

But its over! The city has moved on, the players have moved on. We've come back, we're better than ever, our fan base is stronger and gaining traction. Revel in the present and future, don't spit sour grapes at the past. No one listens, no one cares anymore. Support your team, a team that will be here for years to come and will hopefully become one of the best of the "newer" franchises in an old football town.

Its time.

I don't really care much for this line of thinking. I was 15 when the Colts left town and was never a huge fan like I am of the Ravens. But I would not tell someone from that era to get over it and move on. If the Ravens left town like the Colts did I probably would feel the same way some of the old Colts fans do the rest of my life. It is what it is. The Colts will forever be a part of Baltimore history. However, the more important thing is the Ravens fanbase is growing ans we now have TWO SUPER BOWLS!!!

Anyone here remember the Baltimore Bullets?!

Earl Monroe, Jack Marin, Wes Unseld, Gus Johnson. Epic battles against the Knicks. That was round ball at its best.

Pathogen, the NFL allowed them to take the Colts' history to Indianapolis with them. I get reminders of that quite a bit out here and it always makes me violently nauseous (and then just violently angry).

I love our Ravens to death and get a lot of sadistic glee repping the Ravens out here (specially now that we're Super Bowl champs), but the robbery will always be unforgivable in my book.

I do, had they had an owner that lived in the Baltimore area, there might have been a better chance they would have stayed there. Abe Pollin who move the team from Chicago in 1963 was a lifelong Washingtonian and later moved the team from the Civiic Center, because the building was obsolete even from the day it opened in 1961 with that rectangular design and the permanent stage at one end as well as attendance problems, the only team that really drew big crowds were the Knicks, otherwise the games were mostly half full. Pollin did play a few games a year in the early 70s in College Park at Cole Field House where they drew more fans and decided to move the team to the DC area where he built the Capital Centre. The Bullets ironically enough did play 4 games a year at the Baltimore Arena in the late 80s when Pollin's arena management group took over booking events there. As part of the deal the AHL Skipjacks became the Caps top minor league affiliate until that team moved to Portland, Maine.

We also won the 1985 USFL Championship with the Baltimore Stars in the last game ever played by that league, but I understand why you left them out since they were forced to play in College Park.

The Washington entry that beat the Seattle Supersonics for the World Championship was no JV basketball team. You are obviously not an informed fan of B-ball.

As for the Baltimore Colts, they are a part of the proud and rich tradition of Baltimore football and will never be forgotten by true Baltimore fans --- young or old. Nothing was more satisfying to this "old head" than this year's playoff victory over the Indy Colts. They do not deserve to wear the Colt insignia but that's another story.

Wrong again, uninformed B-ball fan! I can't stand the Wizards. They are boring to watch at best. I am an avid B-ball fan but the team should have kept its old name --- The Bullets. They were named in honor of the historic Shot Tower in B-more. The Washington Bullets who were the World Champions were so good they were a lock to win when they trailed at home by 10 with 5 minutes to play. The Wizards can't win a game at home when they are ahead by 10 with 5 to play.

I believe they changed the name because of the violent connotation and the high violent crime rate in DC.

You're correct about their reason for the name change. I doubt the name change has affected DC's crime rate one iota and it certainly hasn't worked out for the team with or w/o Michael Jordan, has it?

I read on a Wikipedia article that the Baltimore Bullets got their name from one of the shoes that the Bata atheltic shoe company made called Bata Bullets which were produced in the Baltimore suburb of Harford County.
Abe Pollin who bought and moved the Chicago Zephyrs to Baltimore to become the second team to be called the Bullets was a carpetbagger who only wanted to move the team to the DC area.

If Baltimore wants to get another NBA or NHL team they need to build a new arena and the best site would be the one near the Convention Center near Conway St. where some construction company wants expand the Center and build a new 18,000 seat arena that is attached to it. The construction company would fund the majority of it, but would still need some state funding which could postpone the proposed project.

What's the matter with you ? The Baltimore Colts are our history, and the Baltimore Ravens are our history ! It is one and the same, despite the ridiculous franchise argument that apologists from Indy spew. It all happened here in Baltimore, and all Baltimore sports fans need to know about this history, and revere it. This is our collective community Championships, and neither a dead drunk, nor his kooky son, can deny us of this. It's not the Baltimore Colts against the Baltimore Ravens. The answer it is two collective histories of Baltimore football dominance, and it belongs to all past and future Baltimore football fans. The Baltimore Colts and Ravens history is as part of Baltimore, as the Star Spangled Banner and Fort McKenery. Never, ever deny your history, or your old football stars who made this city great ! This get over it stuff is the argument of the coward, or the Indy apologist.
