Rumor: New England Patriots to offer Ed Reed $5 mil/year

1. Ed Reed does not deserve $7 million. That's way overpriced for an aging safety. I know he's one of the best to ever play the game, but that shouldn't reflect his price now.

2. Dickson will stay for the simple fact that he's cheap, and no one else will make a move to sign him. He'll cost us roughly $1.33 million next year. It would cost other teams whatever contract they offer + a 3rd round pick.
Ed Reed deserves more than 7 million even as an older safety he is still one of the best in the games. He hasn't fallen of like Polamalu (who is younger) has. He's still making big plays and can read the QB better than anyone. He just makes our secondary better. I'm sorry who do you think is helping keep Pollard, Cary, Jimmy, Chykie and Correy in place. He's the glue that holds our secondary together and the mans got two to 3 good more years left in him. But with our cap issue 6 to 7 million seems fair. Hopefully he will settle for 5 million.

Go for it. Ed is not worth 5 mill at this point in his career. If Ed doesn't want to stay loyal to the team that drafted him, then go ahead. Be exposed just like all the other players we've gotten rid of for one reason or another.
you cats kill me with all of this loyalty stuff! smh! this is a business man! at the end of the day...it is a business! teams will cut, release and trade you in a heartbeat so players have to do what is best for themselves and their families! and to YOU (and others perhaps) Ed may not be worth $5 mil but he is to another team. in this case seemingly to both the Patriots and the Colts....AFC opponents. imo...we need to try our best (if we can) to retain Ed Reed and keep his leadership on this defense and in our locker room and allow this Hall of Fame safety to retire a Raven!

"smh bruh... you can't be serious" lol... Mili, fact is, someone who wavers so much on what they want cannot be a leader to a team. If they can't even decide on what they want for themselves, then how are they going to lead a full group of people in making decisions?? Truth is, you just can't. Its not being a good leader to not even know what the heck you want for own self. In no way, form, fashion, or universe, is that good leadership.

On the loyalty aspect, yes its a business, but hello, Tom Brady has taken pay cuts for years just to help the Pats bring in good players. That is loyalty. Still getting paid millions, just like Reed, but not being so dang greedy that you put your team at stake. Players get paid way too much man, just like Brady himself even said. I'm sure a million here and there won't put a player into bankruptcy and debt, IF they manage their money even halfway wisely.

of course I'm serious T. lol! this is a business brah! and if you are gonna mention the line of taking a pay cut like Brady, then our boy Flacco should have done that...right? but he didn't! as far as Ed Reed, with Ray Lewis retiring...we lose a major general on the field with our defense. and in his being fickle and all...Ed Reed is another general on the defense. imo, we need to try to hold onto him! i believe with Ray being out that Ed would step up his leadership in a major way to carry the torch and the defensive tradition of the Ravens. i hope he doesn't leave!

Haha... well Mili, I never said that I agreed with Flacco's contract. That's not to say that I don't agree with it, but I have never once said that I agree with paying him that much money. So that point is moot lol. And Reed is great at catching the ball, yes. Can he turn a game around?? Yes. But he also has been taking major gambles that he just can't come through with anymore, now that he is starting to lose a step or two. Those gambles have gotten our secondary beat for deep Td passes more times than I can count on my fingers. Another aspect of Reed's game is his tackling ability. He isn't a good tackler, lets just face it. Yes, its because of his injury to his neck, but like you said, it is a business, so it doesn't matter why he's a poor tackler, he just is. Put a receiver out there, and tell the receiver to take some gambles on the ball, and that receiver will come up with Int's too, just like Reed does. So his ability, at this point in his career, could be likened to putting a receiver at the free safety spot and telling him to try to catch the ball. Poor tackling, and getting beat deep due to taking gambles that don't pay off, is what would happen in both situations, Reed or a receiver, at the spot.

Ed was the colonel of the defense, along with lieutenant colonels Ngata and Suggs. Reed takes care of the secondary. The secondary is not really Ray's business. Ray would go into it with outside linebackers, defensive ends and especially defensive tackles: but the secondary is behind his head. So, Ed really had a lot of control of our defense because he'd go into the front seven, but only as a complement to whatever Ray Lewis was saying/seeing. And Ray and Ed worked together. it's funny because people have this idea of Ray as being a talkative, alpha, confrontational guy: but he really mostly hated conflict. He knew how to lead without conflicting and without talking over other people, but listening. Singletary had the same view of Ray Lewis looking at our franchise from the outside looking in.

When he met Ray he was surprised at how much Ray was willing to learn and listen and accept how he could be wrong and have Mike point out all of what he could do better.

So much do i wish people knew the real Ray Lewis. There's a reason why he gets away w/ the fire and brimstone and calling it "my team" with complete disregard, it's because all those men in that locker room give it to Ray on a platter: he's earned their respect.

And in the same way, Ed Reed has earned even more respect. But, Reed will snap during coverage miscommunication. Personally, i love BP but i'd like us to draft Matt Elam. That boy is all over the field. Joe Flacco is reportedly only hitting 6-7 against the cap this year. i think we'll have enough to resign Ed Reed, Ellerbe and McKinnie (depending on what offers he gets), maybe Pitta or Dickson, but no more than that for us to sign our draft picks and UDFA and fill our needs via free agency.

Are you serious? Ed Reed was rated top 3 in coverage amongst safeties (man and zone) for 2012, 2011 and 2010. He's a very good coverage safety. Please stop watching sportscenter and regurgitating what you hear there over here. Putting a WR at FS would be equal to Ed Reed?

...

Megatron wouldn't be able to do what Ed Reed does in coverage. i mean when the ball isn't flying in Ed's direction. What you don't see on sportscenter.

You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about, saying I watch sportscenter and regurgitate their info. You truly have no idea. I take great pride in watching game film of not only this team, but also other teams as well. So to say that I only have sportscenter recycled garbage as my source, maybe lets get our facts in order first. So we have differing views. So what? People aren't going to agree on the same things. The one thing I won't stand for is people taking my view and saying it came straight from sportscenter. Get your dang facts straight next time, thanks for playing.

imo, one of the main reasons why the Ravens defense has been good over the years is because it has always had a "key" leader at all 3 levels of the defense. recently we have:

D-line = Ngata (DT/NT) and Suggs (DE/OLB)
MLB = Ray Lewis
Secondary = Webb and Reed

They're vastly different kinds of players/leaders. By all accounts Reed has been as respected if not more respected (insanity I know) than Lewis throughout their tenures in Baltimore. Players in the locker room have insane respect for Ed, he's one of the premier leaders on this team. Pollard is more raw raw and intense, Ed has always been the cerebral kind and the players respect him for never seeking the spotlight and for being totally honest with everything. I know Ed has had weird contract things/retirement the past couple of years but those things hardly ever drag on. He griped about a contract this offseason in the first couple of weeks of minicamp and then it was dead. He's been questioning retirement when someone asks him about it because of his neck, he never brings it up on his own.

BP is a leader in the form of game-time energy, or delivering a big hit. He's not nearly in the same echelon of leadership as Ed Reed is. First, BP hasn't been in the lockerroom as long as most of the starters on the Baltimore Ravens. But more importantly, he's not nearly similar to Ed Reed in terms of real leadership, i mean the leadership during Monday - Saturday. i mean, pointing things out in terms of technique on the practice field, hitting the weights in the weight room (look how much bigger Ed has gotten from 2002 till now, Ed has HUGE traps, delts and lats) and most importantly:

during film study and then also player-to-player counseling. Ed Reed talks to a lot of players 1-to-1 and encourages them, talks to them about their issues. He's often cited as the most welcoming guy on the Ravens.

Also, as for Ed Reed not tackling: without Ed Reed's tackling we'd have given up a few touchdowns to Vernon Davis and Michael Crabtree burning our linebackers and corners.

Reed had a great Superbowl performance. So if you're only as good as your last game:

Ed Reed should be our next priority, then Ellerbe, w/ Kruger and McKinnie pending on what offers they get in the open market while we keep in mind to save for rookie contracts.

I really think that Ed Reed will be back in Baltimore. I see him back before Ellerbe, not in terms of priority but Reed seems to really want to be here. Ellerbe, while he played absolutely out of his mind this year, he has had bouts with injuries for the past two years. It held him up in 2011 but he just played through them in 2012. I am worried that this year was an anomaly. I mean, he played so well but where was this before?

He could have turned on the light, or he could have just played hard to get the money. I don't know. I trust the Ravens do. I'm just concerned about giving an ILB who hasn't shown consistency and an ability to stay healthy that kind of money. Ed Reed may be on the decline, but he offers leadership and is still a good safety.

Who cares what you or I saw.
Whenever you read about reed quotes from other players paint him to have been a bigger leader, yet less visible, than ray Lewis.

So yeah I saw others being more vocal publicly but in the lockerrom players say ed is one of the more influential leaders on the team.

You should actually watch the video. I think you'll think differently. Should he have thought before he said it because NFL Network would blow it up as a headline definitely but at this point it's nothing but something the masses can pounce on. We should know by now Ed isn't wary over these type of things just like Joe isn't. It'd be best if he avoided these questions but in the actual context of it all it's not bad. He also said he's a Raven, wants to stay a Raven, and can't envision being in another uniform. That of course didn't make the headline.

He was asked specifically about them.
As he said in regards to the Super Bowl question.
"I'm just answering the question that is asked"

Why do people get upset and act like Ed called them up asking to talk about New England

Exactly. In the perfect scenario he'd avoid the questions but you can't fault him for not doing that. It wasn't said in a serious manner. When you see it in text it doesn't look good but all it really does is add to the Patriots fans' egos.

Is Ed Reed replaceable?

Answer= No

http://www.baltimorebeatdown.com/2013/3/5/4064976/can-ravens-replace-ed-reeds-production

Stats don't come close to defining what this man brings to the team and the offense. Even in down seasons he still puts up elite numbers. His ability to diagnose plays and hold our secondary together is straight up amazing. His mere presencce alone effects the QB's and offensive game-plans.

The fact that people here are event talking about not resigning him is blasphemous. This is the greatest safety in football, and even at an older age is still one of the top 4 free safeties in the nfl.

I won't get into contracts too much, cause as far as I'm concerned the way the NFL values players is wrong and the fact that they try to pigeonhole certain players at certain price points is wrong. Whatever we offer Ed and agree to pay him won't be what he is worth, but I hope he takes it. At this point in his career its not worth going to a new team a new city and geting embarrassed. Thats generally what happens to older defenders who make these moves in this situation. Will work out a price for Ed, and hopefully someone sends and endorsement or two his way.

The article put a question mark after the end of the headline. All newspapers and sports stations do now is try to drum up news. Im guessing someone from the GLOBE was talking with a waterboy from the Patriots and he was saying how cool it would be if Ed Reed signed a 5 million dollar contract with them. This article followed that conversation.
Exactly. You all gotta remember the job of these guys is to write headlines that'll hook a reader into buying the paper, mag, etc to read the rest of the article. The reason a question mark was put at the end is because the info has no merit and the writer covers his arse that way.

Reed was an anchor on that defense all year. Through all the injuries on our defense, Reed was still our leadership in the secondary.

People talk of Reed's age. Did his play diminish? I would say no. Your article discusses that over the past three years he has put up the same numbers. But many of you would say "WHATTTT BUT HE CAN'T TACKLE!!!!". News flash, he has been terrible at tackling since he got that nerve injury 3 years ago, but his play has stayed at a high level.

Now the core of this debate: Is Ed Reed expendable? I guess at every level every player is expendable. But Reed's play has been consistent throughout his career and showed little dropoff in play. If we can't afford him, I get that. This is where I prioritize Reed

1. Flacco (signed)
2. Ellerbe
3. Kruger (but pass rushing is in high demand, and we have Upshaw who I think will be better than Kruger)
4. Reed

If Reed costs 5 million a year, that is not an outrageous number. 5 million to retain a hall of fame player who is still playing at a high level??? Shouldn't even be a question.
