Rumor: New England Patriots to offer Ed Reed $5 mil/year

That's tough. I think we all want Ed to retire a Raven, but that's also the downside of being SB champion. Suddenly every player has a lot of leverage.
Unfortunately for us and Ed he is the 5th most important free agent we need to sign. The hierarchy goes like this, imho:
1. Joe Flacco
2. Anquan Boldin
3. Bryant McKinnie (yes, that guy)
4. Dannell Ellerbe
5. Ed Reed
There is a huge chasm in terms of importance between Flacco and the rest of the guys. He will basically be "the man" for the Ravens going forward. Then there is a second huge chasm between Boldin and McKinnie, just based on terms of reliability and over all production. The other three are placed in terms of importance and (this pains me to type) replaceability.
I still hope with all I got, that we manage to keep Ed. It will physically hurt me to see him in another uniform. Especially a Pats uniform. The only thing that would be worse, would be a Steelers jersey.

Yes, but retaining him might be an issue with the cap space. Hopefully, it won't. But I phrased it wrong. Thx, for pointing that out.

If Flacco can get signed to cap friendly number. I can see us getting Ed Reed back. If 5m is his payday @ for Patriots. He can offer us a hometown discount can't he? Maybe in the range of 3.5-4m p.year.

I'd like to see Reed retire a Raven. Not only that, he still a valuable piece in the secondary. No one covers the field out back like Reed does.

If we can't afford him and he's not willing to stay loyal to Baltimore for what they offer -- then so be it. I wish him the best. But, like most, I'll believe it when I see it.

Regardless though, Flacco has had to compensate for Ed Reed in the secondary for five-years now -- I don't see Ed going to New England as a problem for us.

all depends on flacco yet again. but if we offer something something close to that, he should stay. is getting 1-2 mil more worth leaving the city you spent a HOF career at?

Id like to see him stay but if he wants to leave then cya. To me if I was Ed, Id feel like winning a superbowl with a different team at this point in my career wouldn't feel the same at all, it'd be almost meqningless.

He can stay here where he is beloved and his legend is cemented and he can retire with that status with the city that loves him, or he can go to NE for a couple years where he'll just be another uniform with a name on the back and fizzle out and retire there with little fanfare.

Boldin only helps his case because he will probably be extended and some of that cap hit reduced this season. Flacco is our big cap hit which we have every year. McKinnie and Ellerbe will demand much less money than Ed.

It's all business so it's understandable; other than that are just their own personal preferences like Boldin might get paid pretty high from other team but he wants to stay in Baltimore to finish up his career.

If Ed wants to make some more money than staying Balitmore, it's ok with me although my heart will feel like get stabbed several times but it'll heal when we win another SB..lol

This is a lot lower than I thought they were going to offer.

I'd say that for Ed to leave, any other team would have to offer around 15% - 20% more than what the Ravens offer him. I don't see a problem with keeping him for a little under $5mil, as long as we can get Joe signed.

The Patriots are going 2010 Jets on everyone. They reek of desperation.
it's not easy to win SB now a day after watching how we went through to capture 2013 SB.....

It should be desperation for teams that couldn't sniff at SB for 20yr drought.......

Isn't this sort of tampering, since Ed is not a FA yet?

Anyways, I'm not going to react to unconfirmed rumors - I think Ed returns. Remember when Ray was going to be a Cowboy?

Which is interesting the mainstream media was reporting that considering an article by Chimini on ESPN about Bart Scott stated they originally targeted Lewis during that 2008 FA period but found in Lewis' camp there was no way to lure him away from resigning with Baltimore.

Honestly I just don't see Ed leaving Baltimore. He's played with us his whole career, we're just coming off a Superbowl victory so he knows we can win another, and this is going to be the place that offers him the most money - other teams aren't going to pay a lot for a guy who will be 35 in September and has had several major career injuries.

It's just another reason to hate the Patriots if Ed does sign with them. The Patriots are the favorite child of the NFL as it is and now Brady gives them a HUGE discount so they can have the cap space to go out and scarf up free agents.

Between them and the 49ers getting a kings ransom for Alex Smith it's just all very frustrating.

Just playing devil's advocate, but since it is so hard (nearly impossible) for a team to repeat, he might actually have a better chance next year with NE. After getting shot down 2 years in a row, I think they might be pretty hungry.

He might as well go to San Fran. He'd do them LOADS of good.

Well...I don't believe this for a second. We offered the man $8 mil and he turned it down. Why would he leave to play for $5 mil? If he did turn around and leave for $5 mil after being offered $8 mil by the Ravens before the season, I'd have no respect left for the man.

I'll believe it when I see it. Id see Ed going to Indy with Pags faster then NE to BB. Just my opinion...
OMG no......Colts fans would get utterly insufferable if that happens. *barf*

I'm not going to freak out until something happens. If Ed goes despite everything, then fine and thanks for the memories. Honestly, I'd rage more seeing a Reed Colts jersey than I would seeing a Reed Patriots jersey. But this is business season and we go through stuff like this every year.

wow, some of you guys are acting like Ed is gone. Dont make assumptions based on an unverified rumor.
Agreed. Maybe the Ravens will make an offer like 10 mil for 2 years. Hey Ed, what do you say? You wouldn't want to be A PATSY, Would Ya?

Well see what happens come free agency, but for now it is all just rumors. That said, if Ed can get 5 mil a year than good for him. I hope he takes it, its the last chance he will get to make some big money and I can't imagine us wanting to do it. I hope he still has some good years left on him, but I just don't see him being worth that kind of money. It would be kind of a neat story line to see Flacco go up against Reed in a big game, see who gets the better of who.

He gave them no discount, they are really paying him more up front money.

If he plays out the new contract he is. The money in the first 2 or 3 years doesn't change and is largely guarenteed now you are right about that. The difference is the final 2 years of the contract are laughably below market value. That allows them to spread the signing bonus out over those years and lower his cap number this year.

Brady may renegotiate at some point in the future before those last 2 years in which case he didn't take a pay cut. But as it stands right now he will.
They've been getting shot down since that loss to Eli in the '07 season. It doesn't matter how hungry they are, they just can't finish anymore.
