Alex Smith traded to Kansas City

If they get Revis they would immediately become Superbowl favorites. The only thing missing on that defense is a number one, lock down cornerback.

The AFC West got a lot more interesting, too. The only real thing the Chiefs have been missing is a decent QB. They have talent everywhere. They just haven't had a QB. Now, they can compete.

What makes you think that Alex Smith is any better than Matt Cassell? Cassell led NE to a 11-5 season before being signed by KC. I see a lot of comparisons here.

Good point, and I can tell you why. Alex Smith leaned an awful lot on his defense and Frank Gore, and was really nothing more than a game manager. But, he was a damned good one. He didn't turn the ball over. In 2011, Cassel played in nine games and threw nine picks. In 2012, he played in nine games and threw 12 picks. In 2011, Alex Smith played in 16 games and threw five picks. In 2012, he played in ten games and threw five picks.

according to thishttp://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000145687/article/san-francisco-49ers-agree-to-trade-alex-smith-to-chiefs a 2nd round pick in 2013 and a conditional round in 2014. I didn't think conditional was another 2nd round pick?

I think it was a great trade for the 49ers, but I don't think of Alex Smith as the same bust anymore. I think he'll be a really good game manager in Reids system lol

That's true, but in 16 gp before coming to KC, Cassell only threw 11 picks. You can't compare what Cassell did last year to what Smith did in a different system. Granted, Andy Reid may be able to make something out of Smith, but before Smith worked with Harbaugh he played in 54 games, throwing 53 Ints and fumbling 28 times. So KC is really gambling that Smith has turned a corner and is not just a product of Harbaugh turning him into an effective game manager.

I think Revis at 6M is a bargain. I would rather have him than Grimes who is also coming off an injury. The difference is whether they can afford to keep Revis after this upcoming season because he is going to want a big contract.
That was my thought, Grimes you can sign long term. Revis I don't know, he seems to have forced himself out of a fair contract.

Wow, way to overpay for Smith. I guess KC really didn't want to draft a QB in the first. Understandable with the current draft class. It would still be funny, if KC suddenly starts kicking [profanity deleted].

49ers ain't great at drafting so they'll do ok at drafting with 2 high picks....it'll be scared to have this high picks in Ozzie's hands but not 49ers' hands...

I'm glad Alex Smith gets a shot at a real starting job and getting away from SB loser...hahah

Seattle still own 49 whiners...

Apparently KC gave up the 34th pick and a conditional mid round pick for Smith...

This is possibly the worst trade I have heard in a while. SF is going to be a force for years to come.
Why? Smith was playing great football when he got injured. 2nd round pick isn't much for a chance at a franchise qb.

It is much for a game manager though. It just goes to show how weak the QB market is, and how desperate teams are for a QB as a result.
I agree, they have some studs because of all the high picks they had in the past. Though Kaep seems like a good pick, but it's too early to declare him great.

Seattle is a fantastic drafting team. Their last draft was unreal.

Didn't the Chiefs learn with Matt Cassel? Smith may be better than Cassel but there is a HUGE risk he could revert to the Alex Smith pre-Harbaugh... I think JIm got the most out of him, he's limited and certainly not worth two high picks.

I wasn't all that impressed by San Frans last draft. AJ Jenkins and Lamichael James.......meh
They drafted Aldon Smith and Kaepernick the year before, so not bad.

The 49ers arent completely terrible at drafting. AJ Jenkins was a clear reach, but Kap and Lamichael James, and Aldon Smith were all hits.

The more I think about this, the worse I think this trade is for KC. Alex Smith is not a guy you want chucking the ball 35-40 times a game, which is what Andy Reid likes to do. Maybe Andy can get Alex more comfortable with having to carry the team, but so far in his career Alex hasn't shown he can do that.

Is this the Chiefs 2nd round pick they're giving up? IE #33 overall? If so Andy Reid has completely lost his marbles.
Aldon smith has talent, but was a nobody when Justin Smith was hurt. Still not sold on Kaepernick.

They have the 34th overall in the draft and that is what they traded. The Jags have the 33rd overall.

Aldon Smith was a good pick certainly. All Pass Rushers need help. Look at Jason Pierre Paul and Suggs when Ngata wasn't playing well.

And Kaepernick is a good player, especially for a second round pick. When he settled down he did really well against us.

I'd agree if San Francisco knew how to draft players. They're very hit or miss.

Also, as for those saying it's a stupid move it's not that dumb. Yeah, they lost a few high picks, but you have to remember they have the #1 overall pick, and can trade that to any team and possibly recoup those costs and then some. If they move back a few spaces, they could still get a very nice LT like Fisher. Perhaps Fisher's their target.

I wouldn't have given it for Alex, but they clearly wanted him and probably justifiably felt like they could recoup the cost.

Alex Smith was NOT worth a second rounder..

Chiefs GM is an idiot.
He IS worth that to the Chiefs. Like I said, this is a team that was a moment away from polling the stands to see if any fans could play QB. They are in pretty good shape as far as the rest of the team goes. Now, do I personally believe Alex Smith is worth a second rounder and another conditional pick? No. However, for the Chiefs, in their current position, I don't think this is a bad deal for them. It's not like there are bunches of promising prospects in the draft.

This assumes you can trade the number one pick and get adequate value for it, which in all likelihood wont happen.

Doesnt mean it was a good decision. Is Alex really going to take them to the SB? I mean really? If not, then what is the point. Maybe their goal is to become mediocre, but that isnt going to help them next year when there actually are talented QBs in the draft. So in a sense KC is doubly screwing themselves, because now instead of being a bad team they might move up to being a mediocre team which in some ways is even worse.

I don't know. I wouldn't have done it. Still, I can see why they did. It seems like a very steep price to pay for a QB who was more of a game manager than a game changer. I don't know why they did it.

I do think they can trade the #1 overall pick and probably pick up a few picks in return.
