Compensatory picks

Being cap strapped, I don't think we are going to see many FA hires other than a (cheap) vet NT or LT to try and bring bodies in and see who pans out. With that in mind there likely won't be any hit in the supposed value of FA lost/FA gained aspect of the picks.
The way that Ozzie drafts, we should (hopefully) end up ahead of where we are now as Williams is servicable but not noteworthy and Kruger has had one half a season of actually being a factor.

Your analysis is pretty horrible (no offense). You lose guys every year. I don't look forward to compensatory picks and we don't get them till next year anyway. Kruger wasn't effective in the first half because he was forced to start and he isn't a very good run-stopper. Once Suggs returned he went back to being a rotational 3rd down rusher which he excels at. He is a huge loss and was at times the only pressure we had on the qb.
Were not THAT cap strapped. Joe isn't going to get 20 mil just like Ray Rice didn't get AP money last year. His cap hit even withthe big contract will probably only be around 12 million when you factor in bonuses and the fact that a lot of money will be put in 2015 + since the cap balloons from the TV deals.
Boldin will probably be extended to move the money around. We will probably grab another quality guy who was a cap casualty like Jacoby Jones. This off-season isn't much different than past off-seasons. Bigger names are leaving and we just won the Super Bowl, but regardless, this seemingly happens every year.

We just won the Super Bowl. This entire off-season is good news to me. I'm in no hurry to start the season.

I respect your opinion, but I do have to disagree on Kruger. He is just too one dimensional for my liking, he can't play the run. Losing him will hurt the pass rush but I feel that with Suggs healthy and Upshaw having a full season of work, we will be just fine. The amount we would have to pay him wouldn't be worth what he brings to the table, DE is probably one of the top 3 highest touted positions right now along with QB and CB.
In terms of cap space, we aren't in a position like Pittsburgh, but we don't have a lot of money and the space we do have will go to signing our own guys. Flacco's deal will be backloaded like you said, but with him, Ellerbe, and Pitta all being key resigns and others like Bmac and Art Jones who may or may not be back, we are not going to be spending much in FA. (Not to say we ever do, but if you look at Jones, Leach, Pollard, ect we have in recent years got some players at relatively average to high contracts).
Again, I respect your opinion. This thought just popped into my head about our picks for 2014 and how they should be pretty good. We aren't the Jags who throw draft picks away, almost every pick we take has potential to contribute to the team at some point.

I don't know if we'll get 4 next year. For that to happen, we would have to lose Kruger, Williams, Ellerbe, Reed, McKinnie. They're the only ones I see getting a big deal on the open market. When you factor in that McKinnie & Reed are both old vets, there is a cap on what they net you. I want to say the highest you get is a 5th round comp pick. It depends on how many years they had. Once they pass a certain number of years you no longer get higher picks. How is his analysis horrible? He's pretty much spot on, and yes, compensatory picks are worth carrying out. We're going to get 4 in this year's draft and we're probably going to get 4 (and they'll be higher end picks, too) in next year's draft. It goes a long way.
I think we'll re-sign Reed, personally. Not so sure Ellerbe is a lock like some do. I think he's got a very good shot at returning. That means we lose Kruger, Williams, & McKinnie. The best we could do is two 3rd round picks and a 5th round comp pick and that's if we sign NO veteran FAs (well, at least not the ones who were cut.)
Welcome to the Super Bowl Champion Baltimore Ravens, Matt Elam, #32nd overall, 1st round pick!
Welcome to the Super Bowl Champion Baltimore Ravens, Arthur Brown #56th overall, 2nd round pick!
Welcome to the Super Bowl Champion Baltimore Ravens, Brandon Williams, #94th overall, 3rd round pick!

Is there an age restriction? I always thought it was mostly just based on salary with a few other factors playing a small role. If there isn't one, I could see Reed getting a hefty salary and netting us a 4th.
The Ravens' approach to FA usually involves going after vets who were cut by other teams, so I wouldn't be shocked to see us have a net loss of 4 or more players.
I'll veer on the optimistic side and say that the losses of Kruger, Reed and Williams give us a 3rd and two 4ths. And I'm normally very conservative with what I expect from comp picks.

I agree with you for most part except for the bit on Courtney Upshaw. If you really saw upshaw throughout this season, his more of a mold of Jarrett Johnson than a Paul Kruger.
Upshaw is a great run defender, and a good mid field defender. If Paul Kruger leaves, it probably means we'll draft another pass rusher in draft.

I tried to find a source but I can't find one. I remember way back when I was learning about this stuff that I saw if a veteran FA signs elsewhere after I think 10 years of service the highest the pick can be is a 5th. That's a guess, though. I know there is some limit on the length of time in the league. I just can't remember what.Is there an age restriction? I always thought it was mostly just based on salary with a few other factors playing a small role. If there isn't one, I could see Reed getting a hefty salary and netting us a 4th.

Btw, here's a nifty website I found during my process....
http://bloggingthebe...ck-projections/
It says we will get a 4th, 5th, 6th, & 7th. 2013 compensatory picks, that is.

Welcome to the Super Bowl Champion Baltimore Ravens, Arthur Brown #56th overall, 2nd round pick!

Why did he get so many red marks?A lot of what he said is factual.

Because I said his analysis was bad. I stand by what I said.
