Nintendo, the biggest/longest gimmick in the history of gimmicks. Since they've been making video games since 1974.

I should have said In its current form.. I thought it was clear we're talking about current platforms. Eveything about the company now is a gimmick..

god if only Lucasarts would have completed this thing

My brother and I used ro play the crap out of those first two Battlefront games. It would be nice if another studio picked up the franchise, it would be even better now as multiplayer in general has come a long way since the first two were released.

WiiU has sold 3.45 million units sold, the Wii has sold 99.84 million units, and the 3DS has sold 31.09 million units. (as of March 2013). And on top of that, millions of fanboys and factor in every casual gamer buying anything Nintendo, there is no way that this company is a gimmick. Edited by sliceanddic3

Didn't you hear? DICE the makers of Battlefield picked it up.

I don't know about the Xbox 360 but people who have a PS3 like I do know how hot the PS3 can get. It will produce a lot of heat if it has been on for a long time. I know they have accessories to help cool the system, but how would this work with the PS4? Is it less likely to generate heat after being used for a long period of time and has a built in cooling system or will there be a need to buy a cooling system for the PS4?

You should never have to buy one of those rip off after market coolers for anything, ever.  They don't work, they're products meant to get you to waste your money.  Maybe you're not ventilating your system right, or maybe the first generation of PS3's were bad, but I've never had a single problem with my PS3.  It runs nice, quiet, and cool all the time, and I've done plenty of my normal binge sessions on it.

My launch day 360 on the other hand I have overheated on numerous occasions.  I should probably blow the dust out of it one of these days.  That thing runs noisy, the newer model is so much better.

Believe what you want, I don't know anyone who takes it seriously. It's a gimmick.. Once people get past the initial hype.. back to the real gaming systems they go..

That perception came from the Wii (in that case, it was true) but it hardly applies to their other systems. Also, people never treat Nintendo consoles as their main systems because of the lack of third-party support that Playstation and the Xbox receive. However, Nintendo remains in the console race due to how popular all of their franchises are which is why their systems thrive nearly completely on first-party support.

Even if one were to consider everything they do as gimmicks, Sony and Microsoft sure does pay attention to what Nintendo does. The motion-control gimmick that Nintendo started (or made relevant) has Microsoft basing their next-gen system around the Kinect and Sony pushing the Move more. The tablet controller on the Wii U has Sony making Playstation Vita remote-play a necessity so that all PS4 games can be played off of the screen. The PSP had remote-play as well but Sony is being far more aggressive in pushing the feature now and there's no doubt in my mind it's in response to Nintendo.

It's a gimmick.

They're a video game company that sells well and makes quality games that people (including living, breathing gamers) enjoy.

So what's your opinion of the Playstation Eye or the Xbox Kinect?

Both gimmicks, sad they're being forced

I see. I have mixed feelings. Again I am a diehard Nintendo fan for life. Diehard. I've owned every Nintendo system that's of note. Never had the virtual boy as I was way too young for that. With that said you are accurate in that Nintendo can be called gimmicky but where's the line between gimmick and innovation? It's fine and I personally love the Wii and its controller but not for all games. Some games it's awesome and some it's terrible. I don't like rpg with the Wii mote.

With that said Nintendo has had its share of gimmicks like the stupid card reader for the Gameboy Advance I believe. That was so dumb. But with all its gimmicks Nintendo innovates better than anyone and they help expand the media to improve it.

Nintendo is an innovator, but their technology is seen and raised by the PS and XB. They may come up with an idea but the execution is sporadic.

Say what you will about the Kinect, I'm frustrated that it's being forced on the Xbox One, but it's an amazing piece of hardware.  It's not anywhere close to being ready to control video games, although I imagine some sort of integrative system like that lies somewhere (far) in the future.  What outside people are doing with it, with medical applications and what have you, is rather impressive.  I don't think Microsoft knows how to use it, and I don't like to think that they're spying on me.  I lament the death of naked video game time.

Yeah, they're shooting themselves in the foot by forcing the Kinect. 90% of the gamers don't want it and its pushing the price up, which is why it costs $100 more than the PS4. We'll see how it goes though.

How much do they want down for a preorder? I need to do it!

Gamestop wants $100 down which is what I did but places like Best Buy and Toys R Us only want $25 and $20 respectively.

Also, Amazon doesn't charge until the item is actually shipped so you wouldn't pay that price until the PS4 releases.

If you order online at best buy you don't need to put anything down, they just put an authorization on your credit card then take the money when it ships, you can then just have it ship to store...

I been doing some thinking. As much as I want to buy a PS4 this year I may wait especially since it doesn't come out til the end of the year.

I'll keep my PS3 and keep my pre-order for Madden 25 on the PS3 and wait until next year to get a PS4. $399 is a good price but I'm going to get a bigger TV for my room first then get the PS4. The PS4 graphics will look nice on a 39' TV.

I'm probably gonna pick up a ps4 this holiday season. Really interested in Destiny. The concept of you playing a single player story and running into another player without any warning sounds cool. Also thankful that Battlefield 4 will support 64 players on the next gen consoles, which mean Battlefront will also support 64 players.

Is Destiny set to come this year?

Its coming out in 2014 due to the fact that they want to polish it more and launch it with all four platforms at once.

Will look even better on my 64" 1080p 3D TV

It looks like they're trying to make Defiance, but a good version of that.  Or maybe I'm oversimplifying it.
