PS4/Xbox One Discussion

Even though I initially was impressed with the PS4, I can't help but be disappointed in the exclusives offered right now. Killzone: Shadowfall is garbage (traded it in) and I've played a bit of Knack at a friend's and was disappointed with that as well. Currently, the best exclusive game on the PS4 is Resogun, which is freaking awesome. However, I can't recommend a $400 console just for Resogun.

If you're jumping from the PS3, you'll immediately see upgrades on a lot of things. Like I said, the controller is a huge improvement over the PS3's (still kind of prefer the 360's stick placement but I'm used to it being a Playstation guy),the graphics on the multiplats destroy last generation's, and the UI simple but extremely functional. However, for a system that put all of its focus on games, it's disappointing to see them not deliver the games. Will have to wait until Second Son, I suppose.

I messed around with a friend's Xbone and was pretty envious. DR3, Killer Instinct, and Forza are awesome games. He actually made me want to get an Xbone probably soon.

We're still a while from either system reaching a must convert point, but one thing I will say about Forza is there were more cars, tracks, and things to do in the previous iteration of the the series.  I really want one of them for status more than anything now, maybe it's one of those wanting what you can't have since they're not in anywhere, but if all I'm going to be doing is playing BF4 and NBA 2k14 I'm ok with waiting.

And you should've known better with Killzone, I think the whole franchise is horrible.  Uninteresting story and poor gameplay with that pseudo lock into cover crap.  Sony didn't have to respond to Halo with their own first person shooter, and honestly I think the series getting so many sequels is just for the Playstation fanboys to act like their console is one for serious shooter fans when it really doesn't matter which console you pick at this point since they both get basically the same slate of games, at least in that genre.

If they penalize you for cussing at your TV, I'm going to have some problems...

True on that point. However in regards to the PS4, I'm pretty satisfied with my purchase for the fact that multiplatform games do look that much better than the last generation versions. The PS4 of BF4, AC4, and even COD Ghosts blow away the PS360 versions. I mean, it's not even close. Playing those games have been a real treat especially with that controller, which is one of the best, IMO. I know I'm going to end up with both consoles for the simple fact that I have friends playing on both platforms and I just hate missing out on exclusives. Love my of Halos, Gears, and Forzas much as I love inFAMOUS, God of War, and anything that has to do with Naughty Dog. lol

As far as Killzone, I was hoping that GG would strike lightning again like they did with Killzone 2, which I thought was amazing. I agree now that every game in that series except for KZ2 is pretty damn horrible. Looks pretty but that's about it. Sony hasn't had a shooter that could compete with the top competitive shooters since SOCOM on the PS2 and that series has died this generation.

I love my xbone. Forza although not packing as many cars as recent titles does deliver a great experience. Playing ghost blew me away at first now I'm adjusted and they really did the next gen copy of games justice with the added graphics and depth to them. I will own a ps4 but no time soon.

Got to play around with a Xbox One a little bit.  The controller is magnificent, they somehow made the 360 controller even better.  It's easier to hold without the battery pack sticking out, it's very responsive, and it's just great.

One noteworthy bit of information that I've noticed is that the disconnect between the users and the critics has been particular prevalent during this launch.  I don't believe any of the games have a good user score on Metacritic.  I thought there'd be at least one, and maybe if there weren't serious issues with Battlefield 4's launch there would be.

It's a great controller but the bumpers on it are terrible. Difficult to press in when you get to the top portion of the buttons (at the hump). You can probably get used to it, but it's my main complaint. Everything else is pretty damn good. The triggers are amazing and I prefer them over the PS4's triggers which are pretty good in their own right.

Totally  going to build and or Buy a Steam Machine when it comes out.  Beta machines are so sleek and well designed.

i got both systems and played/bought all the launch titles.  the most impressive overall game to me is dead rising 3 while the best looking game, (and best shooter) is battlefield 4 (on the ps4).

But is there anything that sets them apart from a 360 or PS3 title?  Not even the best of the generation, just your average game.  That seems to be where the disconnect lies.

graphics are noticeably better...it's not a sea change but it's pretty obvious.  (of course, i upgraded my tv along with the consoles but that was just recently).   a lot of stuff can be happening on the screen at the same time without noticeable lag like before.   the library of games is real small at the moment so i wouldn't take the plunge just yet unless you're a diehard. i simply couldn't wait even though i know i should have.

My PS4 gets here on Tuesday. Treating myself to a nice post law school finals treat. FIFA, NBA2K and deciding on the third game. It will be a non-sports game. What do you all recommend?

Anyone who wants to play FIFA or NBA let me know

If you like shooters, I'd go with Battlefield 4. It's broken in some game modes right now but it's fun as hell when it does work. Been playing a lot of Obliteration, which works almost all of the time.

Since you'll most likely get PS Plus, Resogun comes with it for free and Resogun is crazy addictive and a ton of fun. Don't forget you have some free-to-play games available to you as well. I've been dabbling with Warframe which is pretty fun in bursts (plan on getting into it some more) and I liked what I've played of Blacklight: Retribution.

Stay away from Killzone. I had it and it was garbage. I've heard Knack isn't much better.

merry christmas all

i'm a sony fanboy with an ignorant attitude towards microsoft, much like my feelings towards the steelers and the whole boston area. i want ps4 to "win" and the xbone to fail. i want all xbox players to realize that they've made the wrong choices in life and to humbly convert to the intelligent and cultured side of gaming.

that said,  i've been diligently reading articles daily about xbox one and ps4, and frankly, there's no great reason for me to buy ps4. if anything, i'm very intrigued about the potential of the "steam machine." furthermore, maybe it is I who has led a child's blissful life in the shadow of the Glorious PC Master Race. and now that i am mature and gainfully employed, maybe i too can evolve to that higher species of gamer

i will probably wait for Metal Gear Solid to get a PS4 as i did with past playstations. however i expect the righteous feeling of playing MGS on my PS to be fleeting now that Xboners are also allowed to bear witness to the legendary tales of Snake

lastly this "console war" has been a ruse, i fear. the games are not evolving, we're seeing sequential iterations with prettier graphics, but is that all we have to look forward to? hurray for the indie scene. i want more real time strategies.

Any word on The Witcher 3's release date?  That might be the first title worth buying for me.  I've been going through the RPG backlogs and just started on The Witcher 2, which has a very promising story and some interesting gameplay tidbits.

Got my hands on a PS4 controller, and it is an improvement, albeit not as large as I was hoping.  They'd be better served by offsetting the sticks like the Xbox controller.  The sticks can still interfere with each other.  But holding it felt much more natural and the triggers were improved.

How are the sticks intefering with each other on the PS4 controller? I haven't run into that yet? Honestly, after gaming on a 360 for 8 some years, I like the layout of the PS4 controller a lot better. The mirrored sticks feel more natural with hand/thumb placement and use, than when I used the 360 controller with its offset sticks. I guess everyone has their own preference though. I've heard some negative things about the One's controller. How its smaller, feels cheaper, its a step back from the 360 controller, etc....

As for Indie games, I'm happy to see more games out there that are new, fresh, and different. Maybe it will be the Indie games that provide new fresh games for the future, since no other developers can come up with something new. Frankly, the racing/shooter genre is getting stale. I know you can only do so much with it though. I find myself starting to turn to Indie games now, because its something different and it gives me a break from the other stale genres. Also, the indie games could be the ones to provide that new gameplay/innovation that gets into these AAA titles.

You're hands probably aren't as big as mine.  Depending on how the sticks are positioned during a game my thumbs would occasionally knock into each other.  But I accept I'm not like most people in that area.  I haven't had enough time with the Xbox One's controller to evaluate the reported complaints about the bumpers, but I will say it doesn't feel cheap and feels better in hand than the 360's.  If there's something truly wrong with the controller Microsoft has shown that they will fix it.  I mean they got rid of The Duke, and that was one of my favorite controllers.

I still disagree that indie games are going to push the major developers.  The main problem seems to be the cost of making games right now, but I think a lot of it also stems from the people in charge who are business people who don't understand gaming.  The corporate leadership situations in this industry and the movie industry is not dissimilar.

Resogun on the PS4, for instance, is a game that you use both sticks all the time, and you're constantly pushing them in all directions. Left stick pushed right and Right stick pushed left will bump your thumbs if you're playing aggressively. Despite the new concave thumb pads, your thumbs will move about slightly making thumb to thumb contact more likely. And i don't have big hands

edit: i should note that bumping your thumbs is a bad thing because it prevents full range of the thumbstick, resulting in HORRIBLE DEATH

Yeah I have small hands and stubby fingers, so I probably won't run into that then,

I got a PS4 for Christmas from my wife and I'm going to have her return it this week.

I love my PS3 as a media device probably more than I do for gaming.  The older I get, the less gaming I seem to play (which is sad, I know).  But the PS4 isn't worth the upgrade and is a huge downgrade for media purposes.  You pay $400 for a new design and somewhat better gaming graphics (that are hard to notice), meanwhile losing all of its networking ability to stream movies and other media.

It really doesn't seem worth it to upgrade right now.  The Xbox One's stupid snap crap has been criticized because who wants to take up a large portion of the screen for secondary tasks you don't need to see.  Apparently you can't run stuff in the background.  There have been such missteps from both companies.

I've seen the systems in stores and not bothered to buy them.  I've been tempted, but I haven't pulled the trigger.  And I'm a hardcore gamer.  That's about a serious an indictment that I can give them.
