PS4/Xbox One Discussion

I still don't know why people don't wait a while before buying these new consoles... there are too many bugs/issues to work out, not to mention the ridiculous cost.

Not to say it's not great to be some of the first to get your hands on one, it just seems like a better idea to wait a bit.

Count me as one waiting a while before buying one. I plan on getting the PS4 since I'm a Sony guy but will wait until sometime next year.

Sony has never been able to do software and interfaces. They're a hardware company.

yeah but the issue this time is a harware gently press on the left side of the console and ruin your disc .....lol

Well that I didn't hear. I haven't really been keeping up on this stuff though, I've long been in the group waiting a while.

Is it stupid to buy a new xbox 360 today?

Will I be able to play new games in like two years?

No. Eventually they will phase it out and only make games for the XBOX 1. If you do want to buy it, get it used so you save money

I see posts from my friends on FB about having the PS4 and enjoying the new system. I don't see anyone reporting any issues or anything. Seems Microsoft tried to leak something to hurt the PS4 sales or something.

I always view those things as fanboys trying to justify their purchases, and I'll view it the same way when the XBO launches. Reviews for the launch titles have been lackluster at best, and the differences so far between this gen and the previous gen are the fewest we've ever seen during a launch. While I fully expect the differences to eventually be more pronounced, nothing groundbreaking has been done so far and I think most people are just trying to justify the purchase to themselves and others by flaunting it.

Yeah the only game I have seen that seems to be worth it at launch is NBA2K14.

I've had zero issues with my PS4 thus far, other than the expected hiccups in logging onto PSN.

I wouldn't recommend getting either console at launch since both are virtually identical. Wait a year for the software library to mature and for each console to separate itself.

Console launches are meant for early adopters. I, myself, chose to buy a PS4 at launch for personal bucket list reasons. Otherwise, I also would've waited.

Of course, I do love my PS4, but it's far from reaching its potential. Same will be said about the Xbox One.

Too late. It's whatever.

Just got to try out the PS4 controller and I have to say, I like it as much as the 360 controller.

I know it looks bigger, does it feel bigger?  I have rather large hands, that's why I don't like the Dualshock design anymore.  Plus the sticks were always too close together, and they look much better spaced now.  I'm really intrigued by it, although I know I'll wind up with both valid systems regardless.

It feels bigger but lighter. I can't quite describe it.

I can't go back to using the 360 or PS3 controller anymore. The concave analog sticks and new trigger buttons are just too comfortable.

My only issue is that the Options button (which replaces the traditional Start button) is so small due to the large touchpad. However, I absolutely love that I'm able to plug in my favorite studio monitor headphones into the controller and listen to full game audio with zero latency.

Yeah to me it definitely felt bigger. There's a lot more "controller" for your hands to grip on to than the Dualshock 3. It also has this really nice grip-like texture to the back of the controller so your hands don't slip after long time use. And yeah the sticks are much better spaced and I felt they were much improved because your thumbs don't sit an inch above the controller. I would go to a gamestop to try it out and see if you like it.

So how is the PS4?

It's a good system. Personally I don't think we'll really know how good it is until at least another 2-3 years the line when the exclusives begin to rain in and its features get refined.

i love it so far, even though it's clearly just the beginning stage of greatness.  graphics are much improved already, sound is better and more robust, the system runs quiet and fast.  the ui is uncluttered and (mostly) self-intuitive.  the controller is the best dualshock they've ever made and i must say, as a long-time xbox user, it's actually a step up from the champion 360 controller. i'm getting the xbox one on friday so i'm not just a sony fanboy.  (had both ps3 and xbox 360 for the last 7 years too).

I've heard reports that numerous PS4s were shipped broken and that IGN even received broken PS4s... is that true or propaganda?

There is some truth to hardware falling, but I don't think they know the exact extent of it.

Its a simple issue with bent HDMI pins on some launch consoles.  Can easily bend it back into position.

about to open mine

I've had my PS4 since launch and I've been extremely impressed. The upgrade in graphics is immediately noticeable across all games, the DS4 makes the DS3 feel like a toy, and the OS is pretty damn snappy. So far, it's a great console and I can't wait until the big Sony exclusives start hitting.

I was close to picking up an XB1 as well but opted out. It seemed like issues were just piling up on Microsoft's end and the $500 investment just isn't worth it right now especially when the PS4 will have all of the superior multiplatform games. I'll wait for the Xbone's exclusive library to build up and for that price to drop (which should be real soon expecially with a $400 PS4 around).

I forgot to drive by Best Buy and compare the lines. Then again, we have cold and sleet this week and last week was nice, so the comparison might not be fair.

Not only am I waiting for a price drop before I grab an Xbox One, but the lack of a swappable hard drive is a huge deal breaker for me. They need to rectify this in their next redesign.

When you consider that some games require a 20-50GB installation before playing, this makes it difficult to have a large collection on Xbox One without needing to occasionally delete installation files. Sure, this is a minor inconvenience to some, but it's an inconvenience that'd easily be solved if they'd allow us to swap out hard drives as you can on the PS3 and PS4.

I'm hoping that rumor that came out of Redmond about there being a Kinect free version coming in the coming months is true.  I think they're trying to get around the hard drive issues with a massive push towards putting everything in 'the cloud'.  Microsoft is one of the few companies with the infrastructure for that, but I'm not a cloud fan.

But, how is the cloud supposed to offset the issue of games getting bigger and bigger and needing to be installed for optimal performance? And, even worse, how are we supposed to play offline if servers are down for maintenance or get attacked?

Microsoft needs to temper its push of the cloud. Although digital distribution and cloud storage is the way of the future, for right now, it's not feasible to do everything online because of bandwidth limits.

I don't disagree with any particular point, but I will say that Microsoft is thinking towards the future with this console.  The cloud could become more feasible through the implementation of the the One.  You can plug pretty much everything into it, they want it to be an overall entertainment device.  I don't care for any of this nonsense, but when Halo comes out I will be buying one.  I must see how the new trilogy ends.

I wonder what will happen in those awkward moments when the new consoles just happen to be in stock and I'm there.  That's kinda how I wound up with a PS2 and a Wii.

In about a week or two I'm gonna try and return the 360 I bought and buy a Xbox one. The fantasy football app sold me on it.

I don't feel like buying new games though. :(
